  • A Z-Wave repeater or Z-Wave range extender can make all the difference if your Z-Wave Smart Home devices are not performing as you would expect. Z-Wave Plus has improved the range of Z-Wave but sometimes you still need a little more. At these times a Z-wave repeater can ensure your hops and requests make it to and from their destination. In this video, we explain how a Z-Wave repeater works and give an overview and review of the Aeotec Z-Wave Range Extender 6, with mention of the new Aeotec Z-Wave repeater 7

    Very helpful visual explanation of Z-wave range extending concepts. Thanx!

    Super helpful. I was about to buy just one and would have likely had problems.

      @@MakeLifeClick Bought and installed the Aeotec Repeater gen7. Up and running within 10 min and everything is working lightning fast. Who knew I just needed to spend another 70 bucks for a flawless setup.

    Great explanation !! Thank you. I know this is old but I have a question. Can I plug the range extender which I’m assuming is usb into and power adapter? Like a power block or maybe a pc or tv?

    If i have a zwave extender and a zwave plus repeater which one is better to be closest to the router and which is one is best to be farther?

      Hey Tatiana - thanks for the question. Technically it doesn't make a huge difference as your distances between devices will always be a similar ratio apart. i.e at some point your z-wave plus device may have a decent jump to make.
      Personally, I would put the extender closer to the hub and assume your powered hub has decent reach to the extender and the distance between the extender and the next z-wave plus device will be closer to each other.
      If that is still a problem, consider two extenders.
      I hope that helps? I'm assuming you're having range issues?

    Since all Z-Wave devices act as repeaters what I am trying to understand is why someone wouldn't just buy useful Z-Wave devices (smart outlets for example), instead of extenders which seem to be about the same price? I understand that the extender has more power, but to your point, that extra power doesn't help if the problem device can't talk back with enough power.

      Very good comment. In my example I have a great Z-Wave switch but its lost it's reach (technical fault), so in this instance this works for me.
      Another example is where you have too many hops needed and can't just put in more switches to make them happen as there is a limit to the Z-Wave hops to go out and back to the hub.
      Another example, which I have also, is that I have a lack of power points available between both ends of the house so I need to make one big hop to get from one end of the house to the other.
      Otherwise - I'm totally of the same thinking, just get another switch and you have twice the functions rather than only a repeater.

      Oooh.. that is what I was wondering. All my GE Zwave plus light switches say extender built in.. or whatever.. I assumed that is why they work well enough. I am thinking one extender near my garage door (the one going in to house) as my entire network stack is out there and there are some walls between. My guess is these individual extenders are better than the ones built in to switches?

    So I recently bought the GoControl (Nortek) zwave USB hub/dongle. Has better ratings.. several comments from previous aeotec owners that its better. Question is.. will the aeotec zwave extender work with other hubs (e.g. this Gocontrol nortek) one? Or does it only work with its aeotec zwave hub dongle?

      If I understand your question correctly, and from my understanding , the Aeotec
      Extender is a ‘vanilla’ zwave unit. This means it should work with any zwave hub and devices (if they are designed for the same country for use). Hope that helps. Mark

    What happen if you need reach more than one device out range.

    Will this work with extending the range of ring hub

    • @MakeLifeClick
      @MakeLifeClick  Před 3 lety +1

      Without doing any research my instinct was that it wouldn’t but more research says it might be OK to use. It’s standard zwave but Ring security don’t like other door sensors etc.

    Why is a Z-wave smart plug a extender ? 🤔 I dont think it can be. Not like a old fashion cell phone.

    • @MakeLifeClick
      @MakeLifeClick  Před 3 lety +1

      Z-Wave devices (typically) act as repeaters. It’s what makes Zigbee and ZWave devices a mesh network. All the devices can accept and forward service calls.
      Hope I understood you comment correctly. Thanks!
