EASY Hand Stretches for Musicians

    After breaking several bones in my right hand, I rediscovered these simple finger & forearm stretches. I learned the first one from classical guitarist, Gregory Guay, and the second one from my late mother who was an Ashtanga yoga instructor.

    Needed this. I was paralyzed neck down 2005 and quit playing classical guitar and any dreams of playing ever again went away. Maybe a year ago I seen mainly you and others doing this clawhammmer stuff on a banjo. Always loved banjo. I thought well if I had a banjo i might try that even though I can feel my right side but can move it. Rpeek actually contacted me and sent me a banjo. I have learned a few songs now so this was helpful to me with my arm. Thx

    Great! Hands feel better already. Just started playing banjo and your sound is the best I've found to my ear. I am a guitar player and I have found the banjo may be even more fun! I will do more to support your channel soon! Thanks for the effort.

    Ahh yeah, man. I never miss a queue to stretch out my hands, they are always so damn tight working on a computer all day and playing music all night. Of course back in my bricklaying days it was no different, gripping bricks was hard on the hands too

    Thank you so much! I got an index trigger finger that I go in for cortisone shots every six months. I bet these exercises will help out too!

    Clifton! I have a comment and a question, Please.
    1) I’m a Sign Language interpreter. I needed these forearm exercises. Thanks! They’ll help work AND banjo.
    2) When you use lotion on your hands, do you avoid touching your banjos for awhile?

      I haven't "used lotion" since I was a hormone-crazed 20'something.... but Seriously: I recommend avoiding most store-bought lotion as it may contain who-knows-what (like petroleum!). Coconut oil is about the best stuff I have found for my hands when they are all cracked and dry.

      And maybe you already have olive oil laying around: many high societies for thousands of years greased themselves up with that stuff every day. I know the indigenous people here in the Southeastern U.S. used a lot of bear oil on their bodies (when mixed with ocher or charcoal it works better than a suit of clothes I am told).

      Olive oil is great. So’s coconut oil. My fave. About lotions, there’s one I use especially on my feet with bread bags and socks over (no banjo worries there). Works great on dry skin, better than anything else I’ve ever tried, but it smells a little like cat pee.😆
      Temporarily! it fades! I promise!!

    Mr. Hicks, love this video and practicing these stretches and exercises daily. I do have a question, and you have been most kind in answering all my others, so thank you. Do you feel that 2 Finger style is more ergonomically friendly that overhand? I am having difficulty learning overhand (tried both index and middle) but definitely noticing a tightness in my right hand while following your 2 Finger videos. I did have an injury years ago and don't want to go through that again!
