I primarily work with celebrities and the ultra wealthy in my cosmetic dermatology practice. The amount of effort and procedures they talk about are actually a massive understatement for the amount of work and what gets done. One example, nearly every idol gets facial contouring, particularly a fat transfer to cheeks, forehead, and sometimes even the chin. Why? Aside from it making the face more youthful and people underestimating how much the "blank" areas of your face (ie. Areas without specific features like the eyes, nose, and mouth) play a role in how you look, the main reason is so that idols can be dangerously underweight while not having their faces be gaunt.

I know I am guilty of this, but I think we all need to put down our phones and look around us. No one around us looks like the images in media- social media or traditional channels (magazines, tv, movies).
It’s not because everyone around each of us is ugly. It’s because no one actually looks like that. If you think about the most beautiful person you’ve seen in person, they are not flawless. Yet we don’t think they’re any less beautiful because they don’t look like what we see online.
It may be apocryphal but there’s a story about the actor Cary Grant in the 1940’s where he wanted to get into a restaurant. The maitre’d asked for his name. He replied “Cary Grant”. The maitre’d replied “You don’t look like Cary Grant.” He responded “I know, no one does.”

Looking at heavily edited photos or just people edited or looking very attractive is actually psychologically and socially damaging. Not only does it distort what is naturally possible, it also subconsciously dictates choices we make in friendships and relationships. For example, say you are meeting someone for the first time on a blind date. If you spent the hours before that looking at images that fit the above criteria, you are more likely to deem that person unattractive from the start and will pass over even trying to get to know them on a personal level. Obviously cumulative consumption also plays a role too. But if you spent the hours before that date, say, in the park or somewhere where you were observing real, unedited human beings, you will be more likely to find that same person more attractive and be more inclined to get to know their personality. You will see them much more accurately and be able to place them comparatively to others with accuracy, whereas in the first situation, your brain will be dropping them by 2 - 4 points on the attractiveness scale. That might not seem important, but it is. Someone we find attractive, we are more likely to overlook personality shortcomings, and with someone we don't find attractive, we are more inclined to look for reasons not to like then on a personal level as well. So it can wind up impacting how annoyed you might get with someone over a quirk or personality trait or disregard what they say in favor of your own interpretations, which will skew negatively. You can actually see this in K-Pop idol fans with what they are willing to put up with from an idol versus what they would put up with from a friend in real life. They also might suddenly start finding their friends more irritating, less intelligent, entitled, etc. even though nothing has really changed other than how their brain has been primed with the content they consumed beforehand.

I live in Korea, and in real life, a lot of young Koreans are beautiful - flawless skin, perfect figures. That being said, there's also a special place to do your makeup in every bathroom, in addition to the normal sink. You'll always see a lot of people reapplying their makeup there.
I participated as an audience member for an SBS variety show, and every time the cameras stopped rolling on them, people were at their mirrors fixing their faces. Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are so common that there's even a lack of regular doctors. It's much more rewarding to be a plastic surgeon currently. Unfortunately, people go into debt for beauty. The pressure is real, and it's affecting their mental health😢.

I stopped wearing makeup because I didn't enjoy it anymore, it felt less like a "fun" thing and more like a "pressure" thing, so I stopped other than wearing concealer on blemishes lol. I was dating my now fiance then and when we'd be in an elevator or something with people fixing their hair or whatever to ~ omg look so perfect ~ ... I started messing my and my fiance's hair up in retaliation or going on dates to cafes and taking "ugly face" double chin selfies instead LOL. god damn people way too obsessed with that toxic beauty/superficial/brand name culture over there need to take a damn chill pill... seriously ruins the enjoyment of Korea after a while.

Actually, idols don't spend much time dancing. That's just an excuse fans have made up to justify unhealthy weights. Idols typically spend 2 days learning choreography before shooting it in an MV. They then practice a little more and then will only do the dance for performances, which adds up to about 10 - 20 minutes per day. So in reality, idols only spend 10 hours a day dancing for 2 to 3 days per comeback. Most of their low weights come from under 500 calorie diets, something I can confirm due to 2 female idols being in my larger friend network. Their exact diet while touring is below:
Breakfast: 1/4 serving of oatmeal, plain, no salt or sugar or anything else added
Lunch: All green salad, no dressing or salt, 4 cherry tomatoes, 1/2 egg white.
Dinner: Same as above, but swap out the cherry tomatoes and egg white for 1/4 serving boiled tofu.
Beverages: Only plain water or iced americanos.
On performance and special appearances or filming days: no eating or drinking until the live show begins or group choreography shots are wrapping up. If it is a big magazine spread, extend that period of fasting for 2 days and no drinking anything (again) for at least 24 - 36 hours.
I can't tell you how unhealthy that is. It's literally about 350 - 500 calories per day. The agency also gives them stimulants and fat blockers to take regularly for weight loss and maintenance as well.
One of the main reasons people don't pick up on just how thin idols actually are (Wonyoung, for example, has lanugo as do many other idols). If you see an idol with body hair on their arms or legs that is white-ish in color, that isn't regular body hair. It's a symptom of anorexia/malnutrition and being underweight. Idols have their actual body hair removed through laser treatments. But lanugo, due to its light coloring, does not respond to permanent hair removal treatments.
The main reason fans have a hard time determining just how underweight idols are is because facial contouring via fat transfer is probably the single most popular cosmetic surgery for idols, even beyond rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty. Why? Aside from making your face look more youthful and smaller due to more detail in the "blank" areas (cheeks, chin, forehead) of the face, it covers up the unhealthy weight. When we judge someone's weight and health, we rely heavily on facial cues at a subconscious level. It's just biologically wired into us at a subconscious level from evolution dictating humans and other mammals pick out a healthy mate. So by getting a fat transfer, it lets an idol or person in general be extremely thin while not having any facial gauntness. When our eyes fail to perceive the normal facial gauntness that would accompany the BMI and weights they are at, we are heavily inclined to perceive that person as being healthy. This is why when people do tend to spot idols as being very thin, it's usually from photos where the face isn't the first thing your eyes go to. It will be screenshots taken while dancing when the idol isn't controlling their facial expressions or looking at the camera or pictures of them from behind or with their face out of focus.

One of the most popular procedures for K-Pop idols is actually facial fat transfers. Aside from how it can change your appearance, the main reason it is done is so that idols can maintain being extremely underweight without having their faces look gaunt. It tricks people into believing that the person is actually a healthy weight because it covers up the facial visual cues our eyes depend on when assessing someone's weight, since we are genetically predisposed to look for healthy traits for mating partners. It's a subconscious thing that you can't turn off.

Like my camera makes me look SO detailed and sharp and the lighting is so bad, sometimes I think using just a soft filter/light editing actually makes up for that and makes you look more how you actually do. So it just depends on the situation :^) texture is nothing to be self conscious of, but its also not nearly as visible to the human eye as cameras can capture/we are worried it is. Also like when I try to get a picture of a really nice sunset, my phone can never ever capture the same colours so I'll edit it to look like how I'm seeing it in person.

Rather than shaming them, let’s just work on ourselves and be good role models for our friends, younger siblings/people around us. Idols and celebs themselves are victims of these extreme beauty standards. Especially that many of them have been trainees at a very younge age, and have been constantly surroundd by people telling them they have to look and act a certain way. If you are a fan of any of them, just always comment positive things to them, things that you yourself would like to hear, how you yourself would like to be talked to. Let’s remember celebs are extremely pressured to look a certain way because they are literally burdened with how much money and time and effort their company, sponsors, mentors, families spend on them to be able to in turn make a lot of money for not just themselves but for all of those people around them, not to mention dealing with harsh criticisms from people online… it’s a billion dollar industry, have some grace for them they are people with inscurities just like you. I’m a millenial and grew up without social media in my teen years, but we still had a lot of insecurities from magazines, tv commercials, billboards, print ads, because all the models of look a certain way, just as idols do today. So yes they're either using botox or those super powerful antiperspirants that basically block the sweat glands completely.
A related thing they didn't mention is that idols get their armpit hair lasered off too. Always women, sometimes men do it too. I've also heard they put makeup on their armpits to make them look smooth and even toned. Before I wondered how that would even work since a normal person would just sweat the makeup off in a seconds, but if they're blasting their armpits with botox too, then problem solved heh.

So... I'm a K-pop fan, and I'm still new to the whole genre, even though it's been almost three years. Anyway, even though I haven't personally experienced feeling insecure about my body or appearance or wanting to look like the idols I listen to as most other fans have gone through, I've always understood that, just like other music industries, there were things K-pop idols were and still are forced to do to be more conventionally attractive.
Some of the things Fel and Ro mentioned, I've seen. For example, when BTS posted selfies of themselves, I noticed there was always a certain angle in each picture, or their faces looked a bit different, usually smaller by using a filter. Some other idols I watch talked about in live streams how they wanted to lose weight, usually by barely eating, even though they are already so small and most likely underweight.
If you look up 'south korea plastic surgery' the first thing that will pop up is part of an article that reads, "South Korea is often dubbed the “plastic surgery capital of the world,” boasting the highest number of cosmetic surgeons per capita than anywhere else on the planet, beating the US and Brazil to the top spot. Estimates by Expert Market Research put its market value at $1.95 billion during 2018-22." More than likely, most, if not all, of these idols have undergone treatments or some form of cosmetic surgery.
Now, when it comes to these things, I don't think we should blame the idols themselves or judge them for this because: 1. Most K-pop idols enter the industry when they're really young, and kids are very impressionable. Usually, while they're still trainees, they'll get some of these treatments and surgeries done before officially debuting. 2. Even if they are older than the typical age at which most idols debut, all of the East Asian beauty standards are incredibly unrealistic and harmful, but unfortunately popular, especially in their own countries. 3. They don't really have a choice, to be honest.
It's a sad, but real reality that we SHOULD discuss, not ignore.

but if we look at old (and new) hollywood, the same practices exist(ed) in the west too! in old hollywood for example, they were very fond of using special lights specifically to make the female lead's eyes sparkle, paired with a very soft focus on her face in close-ups. now the problem is more that all these things have become more subtle, which tricks especially younger people into thinking it's all natural.

@@annanowak9620I like Hwasa, but I don't think it's fair to her that she's had to shoulder the burden of breaking stereotypes she is still struggling with. Especially when it's touted as a Hwasa vs other idols paradigm. She didn't have much of a choice in the matter. She still got objectified, just in the backhanded way of being considered beautiful in spite of this or that.
She does seem to have confidence and value herself, and has come to terms on some level with the "you're so brave" nonsense, but she also had an entire episode of a reality show where she binge ate late at night to such an extent that she made herself ill. She was starving. She struggles with dieting before promotions and comebacks. She enhances her features with makeup (and likely other industry standard procedures), wears extensions much of the time, and if I'm not mistaken, she recently got breast augmentation. For every system she seems to buck, there is another she is giving into. She's human. Very talented and very industry savvy, but human just the same. I don't think she signed up to be a beacon of alternative beauty standards. I think she just wants to feel beautiful in a way that is possible for her and people superimposed their own personal meaning onto that.
She is selling an image just like so many other kpop idols, and while she may be as close as you can get to a person who owns that image, she has actively been saying through her music and interviews for years that she feels immense pain and pressure, too. So I always feel a bit bad for her when I see her touted as an example of idols who break convention. Maybe? But sometimes she hates herself and she has to process that through and for an audience that can be so unforgiving when you aren't who you sell yourself as. She's supposed to be a confident inspiration, and she will get harsher criticism when she doesn't love herself. Even self-love is a product for consumption.

Even more frustrating part among all these are influencers trying these celebrities procedures and stating that all those are attained by certain skincare or food/drinks that they are promoting is actually sick. There is this one Korean plastic surgeon in TikTok and Instagram who actually states the procedures and treatments that are done by most adored celebrities so that teenagers won't compare themselves to those celebs. Of course, these are personal preferences of one's choice, but that's not really a choice for certain age groups trying so hard to fit in socially. That's the whole point of realising BEAUTY WITHIN. I'm looking at these procedures now at age of 25 and deciding not to get pulled in those IT GIRL dream body but if I was in my teen years while being vulnerable to others opinion and bullying of certain part of my body or skin texture which we all have gone through, I would have definitely considered taking these procedures if given chances and that's scary. Back then, I often heard how girls complained about how their skin was not "white" enough, because it was a thing in my country. Though I find that any person can be beautiful, regardless of their skin color. I didn't recall hearing complaints about skin texture from a smooth-skinned perspective until these days. I don't mean to be salty or invalidate a person's feelings. Of course, even a good looking person could feel insecure too. In the end, it's just our expectations that make us unhappy. But the sad thing is, our society normalizes it, and some even encourage many vulnerable people to achieve that so-called beauty standard.

the thing about kpop idols looking darker in the past and pale now is because in the late 2000s and early 2010s their makeup was darker than today, many actually are not as light-skinned as they appear to be because nowadays idols use foundation shades that are 2-3 shades lighter than their real skintone, you can really see this in some paparazzi shots where there is a clear line between their face and neck lol

Honestly from all of the behind the scenes footage I've seen, not seeming tired is part of the performance. Once they go backstage they are exhausted.
Also, I think it's considered professional in kpop to not show that you're tired. Look at Wonyoung - everyone knows that her schedule's super demanding but she never shows that she's tired and people praise her for it.

I remember, Jisoo of Blackpink said that she's never been afraid to take on challenges. I think her mindset is the standard for idols. To relentlessly go after your goals even though it might seen hopeless/endless.

Saying all these procedures are just part of their puberty or glow up is so toxic for others that compare themselves to these idols. You can never achieve these naturally bc it didnt happened to them either. I had a body dysmorphia even way before social media. So imagine all these younger people have to be exposed to influencers, idols, celebrity, etc. i just feel bad for them. I really hope theres more awareness and real talk for these kind of topic.

Fun Fact: there is no difference between the Botox used for cosmetic procedures and the toxin that causes botulism 😀
So please be aware that getting Botox (or Dysport, Xeomin, etc) is quite literally causing paralysis to the muscle(s). So the “L shoulders” are achieved by paralyzing the trapezius muscle, causing it to atrophy (and become smaller).
Not trying to dissuade anyone or say Botox is bad (I’ve had Botox myself), just know it is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that also has significant physiological effects as well. Like you will be physically weaker.

    • @shelby6
      @shelby6 Před měsícem

This is simply not true, yes botox is derived from the toxin of the botulism bacteria but to say they are the same is wrong and misinformation.

Everything is connected. I can’t imagine what kind of pain I would be in if I got Botox in my shoulders or calves and ceased the use of those muscles to shrink them. Would I even be able to get out of bed? No 😂

In phone cameras my forehead and eyes are huge like an 👽 and when ask others, they'll tell me in person that it looks nothing like me my eyes are smallish, forehead is normal. I often use programs to undo these filters to look more like myself. Im Korean ans Northern Native American, these filters change my eyes from small to big, etc to look far more western beauty?
