- This is the new Skoda Scala! It’s the latest hatchback to join Skoda’s range of family cars and it starts from a gloriously cheap price of just under £17,000! It’s designed to go head-to-head with the likes of the Ford Focus and VW Golf, but at such a low starting price, can the Scala really bring the fight to these world-renowned class-leaders? Keep watching to find out!

@End of Days What's your point?
End of Days remember of Clarkson’s humor in tests, it makes everything just better😊
Genuinely don't know why the Top Gear people haven't tapped this guy up. He's way more entertaining than any of the current lot and look, he comes with a preexisting fanbase and proof that his style is popular.
I was thinking the same
Because they are required to do a diversity hire and hire a female without talent.
Top gear is a waste of time he is better off staying put with Carwow and building the brand..... he is far far better at reviewing cars than the current lot of TG....
@@mohawkZT Actually I agree.
Doug Demuro made a video on his favourite reviews he put out in 2020 and his top choice was surprisingly a video he did on a Jeep.
The reason he said it was his favourite and his most important was because Jeep actually contacted him to do the world exclusive launch video of one of their new vehicles.
It was still in the prototype stage too, so it couldn't actually drive or anything but still, it means even the old fashioned corporate machines methods are updating as they've recognised how important the CZcams Car Review scene is.
God I'd love to see a manufacturer contact Regular Car Reviews and ask him to do an Exclusive Launch Video. It'd be the highest trending car review in CZcams's History.
They can't afford him
Skoda is really the cleverest car brand due to all this stuff... handles, umbrellas, boxes...very useful. Have a nice day everyone reading my comment!
A Nice day to you too
Interesting to see how they try just a little harder to make their cars better and manage to outperform equivalent VWs. I only wish škoda would have a option for nicer interior materials and more sound deadening. Otherwise they are superb(pun intended) value.
@@Scouter98 the skodas could be much mutch better but vw holds them back because they want to look "superior" to skoda
Simply clever XD
@@Scouter98 Actually the newest Octavia has better finished interior than in the newest Golf. Also you can get leather seats unlike in Golf.
I'm a massive fan of Skoda's newest design language, especially the lettering across the back instead of a skoda Crest. Definitely my preference of the the newest family hatchbacks on the road today
And then there are brands like BMW and Hyundai who are hell-bent on destroying car designs and setting ugly precedents.
I think there's actually a term for these weird hatchback/estate mixes. I think the term is 'spaceback'. In fact, I think Skoda is the company that came up with the word.
Rest in peace Rapid Spaceback... :D
@@dannulik considering how mind numbingly crap the Rapid was, maybe no need for the RIP
@@yeshwantdasari2075 you say that with experience? I own a rapid spaceback for about 4 years now and it's just amazing, traveled all over europe in it, and, not a single issue ever. It's not a sports car (I own a 2 seat roadster as well), but, as an utility vehicle, it's awesome

Mat on the Kamiq: "This car has a manual handbrake, used to like those but the electronic one is better."
Mat now: "The Scala has a manual handbrake"= Good Thing?
I will have a manual handbrake over an e-brake any day. Easy and cheap to repair when they go wrong- which isn't very often anyway. The past 3 cars I've owned with e-brakes have all failed/caused issues despite the different brands.
Both are completely different cars with different demographics and consumer expectation.
@Yur Gey I don't follow your logic there. My manual car has an e-brake, my auto has a manual handbrake
@Yur Gey Electronics shouldn't replace some things, honestly
@Yur Gey My e-brake auto releases when I start moving, either fwd or back, on a hill or on the flat. No need for any feathering the handbrake.
When a Skoda is more interesting than the VW it’s based on...
Luckily VW never was made to be "interesting".
raulio81 oh yes you are right, they just hire designers for the giggles. And those concept cars? Just for fun... VW can make great looking cars, but oh lord have they been polishing a turd. All they do is retrim the same cars they designed in 2008 . 😐
Dzek Trbosjek imagine what he must think of the VW 😍 💦 💦😫😫😫
See he says it’s simillar to the Golf which it is.. but it’s actually based on the MQB AO Platform which the Polo/Ibiza/Kamiq/VW T-cross are built on.
Except it isn't. Go drive a new Golf and then a Scala, and you'll quickly realize which one is far better. New Golf is quite a bit more refined than even the new Octavia, let alone this.
I bought one (delivered 3 weeks before the pandemic lockdown started), and I can confirm it's great value for money. Extremely comfortable and practical, really good mileage on the 1.0 115hp: I easily get 18-19km/l, but I can push it over 20 if I really want to.
It's not flashy in any way, but the value for money is almost unbeatable.
What do you think of the Monte Carlo version ?
Your very lucky that the prices of this car are affordable. In the Netherlands they start at € 21.630,00.
How you doing it on traffic? What mode you use which speed you drive ? I want get 17 it will be fantastick
Could you explain how to get 18-19 KM?
Where do you calculate fuel usage by liters per kilometer? It's liters per 100 kilometers almost everywhere.

A clever thing about the sunroof is that the blind roller is actually in the front, not the back like on most cars which means the back doesn't lose headroom and the driver can have the sunshade closed only for the front seats while the rear passengers still get sunlight.
2:35 Did you notice that he actually swiped on the screen while showing the dash because of gesture control. 😂😂😂
Piyush Thite he didnt
I love all the little features and details! The umbrella in the door, the netting under the back shelf, the clip for parking tickets, the ice scraper in the fuel cap.... Skoda really made an effort with the Scala. Their slogan "simply clever" really fits here.
"now you have nowhere to put your key". I dunno, the jacket, a doorbin, your pants, the boot.. literally anywhere inside the car or on your person.
Yeah but why have a standard flip key when there's nowhere for the key, I think that's what he meant... The key, not the fob.

Skodas are never better at styling than VW, even than new Golf, get real.
@@iuhshwth1634 I am truly sorry that i don't share the same opinion as you. It is just that the Golf 8 is justa newer version of the Golf 7 which was tje newer version of the golf 6. I agree I hate the golf
Golf is just boring
I just drove this car for 4 hours with the same engine but with auto gear box and and I was super impressed. Very spacious inside. Engine was punchy and unintrusive. Gear box was doing its job perfectly. You can shove it into Sport by pulling the lever if you want immediate accelaration. It pulls like a charm. Suspension is fine. The only complaint I had is that at speed (130 km/hm) the road noise got pretty loud but not unbearable. I totally recommend it.

Watched your first video introducing it to us! I was absolutely amazed at the Scala! Skoda really have upped their game with the new Scala! It feels like a huge upgrade from other Skoda's such as the Fabia. Definitely would consider this as my first car! They should do a hot version of it. Skoda Scala VRS! I feel like in the other video Skoda overhyped it a lot and it looked better in the launch video.

you have the Montecarlo with all the sports stuff and a 1,5 l Turbo engine with 150 hp ... is not a RS top Spec but i think its fast and fun enough and the looks is great as well as for example the Fabia Montecarlo wich is also a very good car.

Finally, I've been waiting for this review since the lunch of the Scala!

6:26 you got that right Matt!😂 Proud Škoda owner here!!
I have one, the 1ltr 115PS DSG SE, get around 48MPG. I love it!
Even with the little engine, they're a quick little car and people are very surprised of how nippy she is!
finally!!!! you did a review on the scala
“Click on the pop out banner up there to see how much u can save on one of these....” I love Carwow and Mat😂
Scala is based on A0 platform, therefore it is more like a Polo than Golf.
Considering the space and all the stuff inside, it can easily compete with the Golf. That's why every reviewer out there compares it to the Golf, not the Polo!
You can get an adjustable boot floor as an option. Just like an estate car! Good review 👍🏼
Not just because I am a Czech, I do believe that the Scala is a very good all-around car given the price range. I tried the 1.5 TSI model (top of the range) a couple of times and I was genuinely surprised how good it was. Together with the build quality, practicality and the price, it is, in my eyes, better alternative than a comparable Focus or VW Golf.
Thats because it is. Its more spacy than golf, just as well equipped, way cheaper, and is a fun enough to drive. The 1l 115bhp model is nippy around backroads and city, only really shows its limits at around 140kmh.
Matt watson vs Doug de muro, most underrated rivalry in youtube.

Great reviews Matt! one small criticism, there are so many adds though, the length of the video is less than the adds :)
reminds me of my Rapid Spaceback, kinda a hatch estate thing and that rear glass panel is very similar
6:40 I never understood why this is a problem, just leave the key in your pocket. You never have to touch it. Isn't that the beauty of keyless go?
Correct
I could be wrong but I think the issue is that the car has keyless start but not keyless entry So you fumbled to get the key out to press unlock, and now it's unlocked and the key is in your hand but you don't need it. Still, when I saw that part of the video I was like... You don't have pockets?? Tf, I mean where do you normally put your car key when you're not using it??
In always keep my key in my pockets. Not even once did I feel the need to “place” it somewhere else inside the car. As you’ve said, that’s the whole point of Kessy.
Am I the only one who calls the Scala as SKODA A3
Nice presentation. Thank you. I'm waiting also presentation for the newest 2020 OCTAVIA. Best to all!
Great car, ordered mine and should arrive in July, can't wait to drive it!
Big fan of carwow, good on ya Mat👍
Awesome video! I wish Škoda would come to the U.S or Kentucky at least, because I’d definitely have one of these outside my house if they did!😸😸
I don't know why they don't. They are even in India and China but not in the US...
It's great value, and sunroof is a good option. I'd have it with the 1.5 tsi manual and the adjustable sport suspension. I reckon it would be pretty fun to drive. Throw a Racechip on it and that thing is making 180+ hp.
Really amazing review learned alot of things how to review the car.
Sometimes you can’t see exactly who the market is for a car. Some are pushed toward a certain stereotypical demographic. This though, this is aimed at the young parent/grandparent market. This is like the perfect “I have two kids in primary school and a short commute to work.
Except they are all apparently now idiots, so will buy huge SUVs to park outside the school gates with the engine running. Gah.
The one thing that prevents this into becoming a Golf killer (or other compact) is the platform. It's a stretched Polo (MQB A0 platform) and not a full MQB as the Golf. For some people this won't be enough in terms of lateral space even in front and stability.
I see what you mean, but I went from mk5 gt sport (2008)to scala(2021) and honestly havent felt any dofference in terms of handling. Sure the shocks are softer on the scala, but otherwise its very manouverable. Of course going from mk7 or newer might feel different, but imo people who havent driven the scala are just looking at the platform without giving it a chance.
Also since when polo platform is a bad thing? Its as solid as golfs.
@@Olterior I haven't said the Polo platform is bad, I stated that there are different classes of cars. The Golf is C segment and the Polo is B segment. There is a difference in terms of road stability, space and so on that a smaller platform can't cover, that's all. These cars have different purposes and different target buyers. The Scala might steal some Golf sales, but then again Golf battles with other compacts - and it loses, the mk. 8 isn't that great compared to other competitors. Scala will offer a bit more space compared to let's say an i20, Rio, Clio etc. and there's the money to be taken, not from possible Golf owners.
@@Sindarul But I was a golf owner. and I did go for a Scala over golf. And I don't agree with "There is a difference in terms of road stability, space ". You are just talking out of your ass now. Go check the dimensions for the new golf and scala. The scala is bigger in every way than the golf. Regarding road stability, I see no difference between the two, owning a golf and a scala. i20/rio/clio etc. are all in competition with fabia. Scala is not a Fabia with a bigger boot. It's a golf built on MQB A0. Do your research. It's stretched to the maximum permited limits of the platform. It's sole purpose is to attract the buyers of smal family car(people looking at golf/skodas own octavia/focus/i30). The idea is that whilst Octavia is great value and a great car, not everyone wants a saloon. You can argue all you want, but if you sat in the car for 30 seconds you would see why its a Golf competitor and not a Polo competitor like you claim.
@@Olterior We agree to disagree. It's ok.
@@Olterior I agree with you, I have just gone from a Mazda 3 to a Scala Monte Carlo and there is no difference in size. Pretty sure people wouldn't say the Mazda is smaller than the Golf 😊 and the Scala has a bigger boot than my Mazda too! 👍
I do not know how Peugeot does calculation of boot space, but last year when I was car shopping I checked it out due to advertised boot space and it looked nowhere near that number. It looked like every other hatchback in that class.
I heard somewhere they include that space under the carpet where the spare wheels go into that calculation, so I will agree with Matt, the Scala does seem to have a larger boot.
Edit: Sporty air conditioning, phew, noob! Matt never drove a 90hp car and tried to overtake someone with A/C on! That setting turns it off obviously so you get 20% more performance :)

I own the predecessor (Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1.4 TSI) in Singapore. It isn't the most popular car where I live but for the price, it really does kick ass against its Japanese/Korean rivals (Mazda/Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/Kia) when it comes to performance. Against its "continental" car rivals (VW/Audi/Volvo), the main draw is the price point. I think Skoda provides some of the best value if you look past its brand... it is what it is esp since it uses VW engines. I call Skoda the VW = Value Wagon!
And another video got me notified again! I love carwow❤️
Everyone loves carwow
6:43 Matt you sound really daft moaning about the keys. Its keyless that means u keep it in your pocket /purse without ever needing to take it out! It's convenience not nuisance!
By the way Matt ‘Sports air con’ on VW/Audi cars like this Skoda reduces the power draw from the AC compressor so that more power can be used by the engine if you so desire.
Air conditioning takes part of the performance away when active. So it probably lowers AC power or perhaps it prioritizes acceleration over cabin cooling. Today it is probably not noticable at all, but few years back when 50hp engines were common disabling AC made a big difference.
This car and this review is probably my favorite I've seen in car wow. Wow what a car at the price. Not available in Malaysia though

“The 308? Nooo it’s a hatchback. SHUT UP IM TRYING TO DO THIS” -Mat Watson🤣🤣🤣
The 308 sacrifices pretty much all the rear legroom for a big boot!
God. I've been waiting 8 months for this :D
Spacing out the letters on the boot panel. That's another thing loads of car manufacturers are doing other than incrementally making their grilles bigger.
Soon, the letters will be so spaced out, they'll be running across the doors and onto the front wheel arches
I think it's because of the quarter window at the back is a bit larger than typical hatchback makes the profile looks a bit estate like. It looks very decent at the front and bacc. Overall a practical and well rounded family hatch, maybe a bit too sensible (predictable, boring) in the class ...
