A huge shoutout to Roger Chance! Thanks for the reaction and comments. These ladies are arguably the best live rock band on the planet. If you're not convinced, just check out any official live video. As for this video...my abridged interpretation is that the caddy and the jag represent the US and UK, respectively, where rock dominated for decades. They've been dethroned by Japan, lead by female rock groups in general and Band-Maid in particular. Cheers!

Welcome to Band Maid. Japanese female rock band. You can’t place them in one genre. Their music covers multiple genres and at times different genres in one song.
Their music has a familiar sound to it. It seems to remind you of something. The language isn’t that important to me because the music itself is so good and brings a smile to me.
To see them in MV or in an interview they seem so quiet. Put them on stage you have a kick ass live performance.
You will find on your journey of Japanese rock there is immense amount of talent that you have been missing. I feel these bands have revived rock music. Being 70 years old I’m glad to have them.
Japan has a thriving rock and metal scene. Band-Maid does well enough commercially, but they’re not generally the top sellers. Their music isn’t as accessible as pop, so that’s always going to make the commercial side suffer, no matter the quality.
Their music is dense and complex. They layer fairly catchy vocals on top of what’s basically prog music, so there’s some accessibility, while also being rewarding to listen carefully to. Musicians tend to especially love them because they can appreciate all of the details hiding under the surface.
The best in their country? They are the best band that has appeared on this planet since Bill Haley made us all dance around a clock.
Live they are even better.
They have more than 10 years of experience and more than 120 songs released, all different from each other, the only thing their songs have in common is the love they put into them when creating and performing them for their adoring fans, because the adoration between band and fans is mutual. Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
I travelled from the UK to Japan just to see them live. They are the best live band I have ever seen. I'm 58 and seen the best, but these ladies kill it. Their average show is 2+ hours long, no support bands, no encores.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!
The language barrier used to be an issue for me until I realized that I didn't understand the lyrics in about half the songs I listened to growing up. I just treat the vocals another instrument. They do have a killer instrumental MV called From Now On if you want to see what they can really do musically.
Music is a language all it's own. You'll miss out on a lot if you let the language barrier keep you from checking out some of these Japanese bands. There are no half-assed musicians in Japan.

If you've read these comments, you will be waking up to the fact that we love this band. I've just stumbled into my eighth decade and Band Maid make the best music I have heard in the last 50 years. There is no language barrier. Saiki's vocals are the band's fifth instrument. And just to let you know,
Miku Kobato - rhythm guitar and vocals - writes most of the band's lyrics. She is the really cute one. She founded the band and is also a shit hot poker player.
Do not underestimate this woman. Remove your blinkers (shades) and embrace japanese rock. You will not regret it.
Warning! was the closing song for Band-Maid's 2023 appearance at the Sonic Temple Festival in Columbus, OH. There were body surfers going overhead and a nearby mosh pit that i had to keep an eye on so as to not get body slammed. Fun times.🙂

As awesome as Band-Maid's music videos are, you have to see them live to see what they can really do. Best rock band on the planet, bar none.
Just to clarify, the band is not called "Maid." The band is called "Band-Maid" and they're the best rock band in the known universe. Most of their lyrics are in their native Japanese, although they do have three all-English songs in their extensive discography. Listen to the vocals as part of the music and worry about the meaning of the lyrics later. Band-Maid are a music-driven band. Their lyrics are great and usually convey a positive message, but they are always in service to the music, not the other way around (this is music, not beat poetry). Keep listening because you're just getting started with the band who will change the way you listen to music, and may even change your life for the better.
The totally unfounded rumour is that the Caddy and Jag represent American and British music industries racing and taking chunks out of each other - when the smoke clears there will be a female Japanese guitarist standing atop the wreckage, shredding.

And a thing about the maid outfits, Jason: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!
Well, no-one can make a definitive statement regarding “who’s the best” without someone saying it’s just opinion. With that said, IMO there’s no rock band in the world better than them now. As good a live band as I’ve seen in my 58 years. And, amazingly, considering their English is not fluent, still the best crowd interaction of any band I’ve seen.

Welcome to the BandMaid experience! The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts:
•Bass solos are more likely to happen than not. There's a bass solo on their very first video!
•Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be
•Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen.
•Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre!
•You like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that.
•April Fools Day 2019
As a joke they recorded a redo of Secret my Lips with traditional instruments and with lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. MV is stunningly beautiful.
•The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/lead singer steps back to make way for a new more hard rock vocalist. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors. Oh yeah she has her own signature model guitar from Zematis (after playing less than 10 yrs)
•There is no "I" in BANDMAID. Well ok there is one "I" but my point is the songs are written by BandMaid. Not just Kanami Tono. The highly innovative bass and drum lines are created by Akane and MISA. There are no George songs and John&Paul songs. There are only BandMaid songs.
•10 plus years with the same line up. Think about that.
•More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole.
•Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics.
•Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's.
•As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both.
•Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese.Most songs are full of joy as well.
•They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
•Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.
The world has spent decades listening to predominantly English speaking music without understanding the words. That didn't stop people from loving it though. Exactly why it doesnt stop me from loving Band Maid's music. Their music is so well made and pack so much in it that it's easy to get past the languge barrier.

FYI the cars are them and their old record company butting heads, sorta. It is as the titles says a warning that they will not be held back from what "they" want to do. So, they parted ways and joined Pony Canyon and released this as a shot across the bows so to speak

Don't be put off by not understanding the lyrics; most of us don't understand them either. And if you try to read the lyrics, you'll miss out on a ton of what's going on in the song.
Band-Maid has toured the US 3 times in the past 2 years, including performances at festivals like Lollapallooza.

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

Band-Maid!!!!! Roger is the man! First of all, these five young Japanese females all play their own instrument. They are incredibly gifted and bad-assed when it comes to their music. How many male rockers have the cojones to strap themselves to the top or hood of a car to get the shots for their videos. Kanami Tone, the lead guitarist and primary composer almost looks like Godzilla standing on the top of the car with the fire in the background. Maybe (not sure) the video of "Warning" is a subtle reference to a car-wreck of a relationship. The cars are Mitsubishis. Band-Maid has fire in the background of many of their official music videos. Band-Maid is one of the top hard rock groups in an oversaturated rock market in Japan.There are some great rock bands there.i.e. Lovebites, Nemophila, Hanabie, Hades, Trident, Gacharic Spin, Asterism, and several more really gifted ones.
The official live video of "Hate?" by the band has really gone viral. It's a heavy hitting pure rock and roll banger that really shows how talented the Maids really are and how far they have come as a group that has been intact for over ten years. The video was filmed at their 10th Anniversary Tour finale in Yokohama, Japan last November. So my suggestion is that you should react to "Hate?".

Love this MV but, amazingly, they are even better live! But then they are THE best Hard Rock band on Earth. Try a live performance from their huge concert last November - there are 4 on their YT channel but HATE? is one of the great Rock performances of the 21st century (and in the 70's and 80's I saw Zeppelin, Zappa, Stones, Floyd and others perform some of the best ones of the 20th century!). PS Had to smile at 5:15 when you mentioned them damaging the cars and the bumper falling off and said how cool it was that they were that committed...but then I knew what those cars were in for later on!

Such as the lead guitarist, Kanami, is deathly afraid of heights. Yet she still rode on top of the car while playing. In other videos she has also allowed them to put her in places that terrify her. Part of the reason is the fact that when she has her guitar in her hands, she becomes another person. Her band mates and others will and have said that many times in multiple interviews.

This particular song is about #50 on my list of Band Maid songs, and of course it is not live, so you pretty much got a tiny taste of this band, here. The operative word with Band Maid is LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Suggest the songs, Domination, Daydreaming, Hate, Play, Freedom and Manners with Black Hole, all LIVE. Any of those will stick you on this band.
As to lyrics, most of the time nobody cares all that much for the super-lame lyrics in almost every song out there. Musicians, in particular, know that lyrics are usually little more than another instrument, so as a musician, I totally love this band, lyrics included.

I don't know of any other band where the fans' playlists differ so much. So, this is just a quite random selection of songs: For some very special live videos try Freedom, Play, Real existence and Endless Story. With Moratorium (Live at Zepp), Rinne (MV) and Dice you can hear more hard rock while more catchy songs are Choose me (MV), Bestie (MV) and Alone (MV). And if you want to hear some ballads then maybe About Us (MV) and Daydreaming (MV) are good picks. But don't miss some of their instrumentals like From now on (MV) and Onset (Live). And finally a very special live performance is Manners/Blackhole (Official Online Live)🍌 And there is more: For example the songs with Miku in lead, their christmas acoustic concert and the 'cover band' Band-Maiko ;-)
But if you want to start at the beginning of their career (2013-2017) then go with Thrill (MV, their first video), Real Existence (second video, the official live from 2018 video is great), Alone (MV, first own composition), Freedom(best LIVE performance), Choose Me, Play (LIVE!), ...

In Japan, compared to pop singers like YAOSOBI or Ado or idol franchises like AKB48 they are pretty small, but compared to active rock/metal bands in Japan they are probably top 10. Despite singing mostly in Japanese they have no problem selling out smaller venues in the US. When it comes to composing and playing rock music they are no joke.
Band-Maid is great, but they have a LOT of competition for the top slot... from other ALL FEMALE BANDS alone. Try Nemophila, Hanabie, or Bridear for just a few. Band-Maid is my personal favorite, as they bash genres together in their amazingly extensive catalogue of songs like few bands have ever managed. But those other bands are no joke either, they will rock your backside off.

The cars are the US and UK rock/metal scenes crashing and burning. Rock isn't dead, it moved to Japan.
I liken the language issue to opera, how many opera fans speak Italian or German? Knowing the lyrics is nice, but if you treat the voice as an instrument you don't need to understand it to appreciate it.
Saiki, the lead singer, was actually using a lot of 'english' in this song, but with a strong Japanese accent, which made it hard to pick up on.
They describe themselves as 'hard rock', but they have strong influences from many other genres, and hence their performance style also changes with the songs.
That's without taking theur "arch-nemisis" band "Band-Maiko" into consideration, whicvh has strong traditional influences and more accoustic instrumentalisation.
They're actual name is "band-maid", not simply" maid". It's not that the whole world does or has to speak english, music is the universal language. If everyone would think like that, noone in the rest of the world would have ever listened to Elvis or The Beatles.
Not judging but some of the best rock bands nowadays don't sing in English. Music is a universal language even if lyrics aren't. :)

Great reaction! However, contrary to your guess, BAND-MAID is not very famous in Japan. One reason for this may be that many Japanese people have a poor ability to listen to musical instrument performances properly. It's really sad, but that's why their fans are so passionate.
