After John has returned from the Army. However, when the September 11 attacks occur, John along with his team has requested to extend their deployments. Savannah learns he will go back and gets upset. John asks her what she wants from him and that if she asks him to stay he will. John is lost and doesn't know what to do because Savannah is all that matters to him. Savannah hugs him and comforts him.

What’s the Dear John movie about?
John Tyree (Channing Tatum from Step Up and The Eagle), an American Special Forces soldier, takes advantage of a leave in the USA to see his father and go surfing. Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried from Solstice and Mamma Mia!) is a student and they meet by chance on the beach. It's love at first sight between them, and although they belong to two different worlds, an absolute passion brings them together for two weeks. But John has to leave again and, following the September 11 attacks, he is sent to Afghanistan. As for Savannah, she must return to the University. For several months, John and Savannah write heated letters to each other. Savannah, more and more worried about the safety of her beloved, questions herself. As desires and responsibilities become more and more opposed, the couple struggles to maintain their commitments. Then, at the worst possible moment, John receives a letter of rupture without any other explanation. He is destroyed and does not understand what is happening to him. When he returns to America for his father's funeral, he sees Savannah again. This one got married. The young girl has not given in to a whim or to her family's orders: if, in John's absence, she has chosen to marry Tim (Henry Thomas from E.T.), whom she has known since childhood, it is because he is suffering from cancer and someone has to take care of his son Alan, an endearing child who is also autistic. Even though the end credits come before the denouement, we understand that after Tim's death, John and Savannah will be able to love each other and raise Alan together, respecting the memory of his father.

I don’t understand why it tore your heart out. The whole book is a bunch of bad decisions that they could of avoided.
I supported my husband through every deployment and his second enlistment. If you really love someone, you're a lot stronger than you think!
That’s great, and I’m sure he appreciates it. But it isn’t just about love. It’s also about respect. Consideration. John *promised* her one more year and he was out. Then he signed up for more time *without any discussion or thought to the promise he made.* When you are planning a future with someone, they’re supposed to get a vote or at the very least a heads up. Not be told after the fact and just expected to deal with the consequences of a decision they had no choice in and we’re not taken into consideration during.
That’s great, but this life is not for everybody so you can’t expect every person to act in the same way. Not to mention, they’re both so young still.
No offence or disrespect intended but it is a bit silly to get killed so USA can get oil and heroin from Afghanistan

People are too hard on Savannah. Two years is a long time and she has a right to a loving relationship the way she envisions it. Love is not being miserable waiting for someone to come home.
Love is always worth waiting for otherwise it isn't love, but convenience. I know of stories of people whose relationships were broken apart because the woman wasn't willing to wait for her deployed boyfriend to return. Guess what, the woman was still single and had failed relationships in the past. The boyfriend came back and he was able to connect with another woman of greater patience. I wonder who ended up on top in the end of those runs. Still, if a woman can't wait then she has to move on and accept the consequences of her choices even if in the end she forfeited a good man. No excuses.

Love is always worth the wait. I can say that from personal experience seeing as I am actually waiting on someone for 2 years(17 months left) if you truly love someone you will never give up on them.

This is my cousin, he enlisted and was told his team would be deployed. 3 years and nothing than he decided to get married and his team got deployed he got mad. He really wanted to go… I think this is way he always bowling and out all night. I feel for his wife, my cousin never had motivation his whole life, I helped him get is diver license, I went to his house everyday when he locked himself in his room for a week one time I tried talking to him but he wouldn’t budge.
I feel like he a lost soul or missing something. He says he regrets getting out of the army. Idk maybe he just thinks differently or the fact that his dad wasn’t always a dad figure.
20 Years later and I can only imagine how their Characters feel with what happened recently (I know they're fictional.)

The book got me frustrated because after all those years they still loved each other and her husband knew that basically gave them his blessing because he knew he would die. But they still decided to not be together. Honestly I think a lot of it too was he concern for his autistic brother but he can write it in the will that she has custody plus John would he fine with that.

@@NolanHawkeyeAnthony It never got in the way of said love but love isn’t enough to sustain a relationship, being present, sacrificing & compromising are only a few important cornerstones that make a lasting relationship. Him choosing to re-enlist might seem heroic but it also means he is choosing that over her. Not to mention, that’s the reason she married Tim, because he was terminally ill and he needed a long term guardian for his autistic son. Technically that is ‘heroic’ too because she sacrificed her happiness to do so but in John’s eyes, it was wrong so it’s about perspective.
