- ‘Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe’, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, opens with a Sinfonia that is dominated by a melancholy oboe solo. The first aria has an unusual construction. While the tenor already appears to be reconciled with his imminent death, the soprano cuts through his sorrowful notes with Johann Hermann Schein’s hymn ‘Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt’.

0.00 : Eine von vielen Fähigkeiten Bachs als Komponist ist sicherlich, dass er es vermochte, für jede einzelne menschliche Gefühlsregung die jeweils passende Musik zu schaffen. Die Sinfonia ist für mich z.B. das perfekte Muster für eine Trostmusik. Ich habe dieses wunderbare Stück vor wenigen Tagen auf einer Beerdigung in einer Version für Klavier solo erleben dürfen. Die Wirkung war einzigartig, man konnte förmlich spüren, wie sich ein unsichtbarer tröstender Arm um die Trauernden legte, Ruhe und Frieden mit dem Unabwendbaren stellte sich ein. Das schafft in dieser Intensität außer Bach vielleicht nur noch Beethoven. Einzigartig!!!

If you look at the oboe sheet music, you're going to see that it is quiet different from what he playied, he made a WOUNDERFUL job at the ornamentations!
In the Baroque era, it was common for performers to take liberties with ornamentation. Many modern interpreters do the same when playing Baroque music.
I've been a huge fan of Bach playing and listening to his music for many years. The incredible work you've put into bringing his music back to life in such a beautiful form is truly admirable. The cembalokonzert Largo is an adaptation of the Sinfonia here. And he undertook a similar adaptation to the BWV 1053 concerto as well: the first two movements are from the BWV 169 Cantata (Sinfonia and _Stirb in mir_ aria) while the third is a rhythmic diminution of the Sinfonia from BWV 49.
Just another testament to J.S. Bach's genius that he could re-use multiple different materials and adapt it to a different medium, and produce a superb effect either way

What an amazing countertenor, had to point it out as I've noticed him in a few arias. Super clear singing with brilliance and fits dynamic balance so smoothly while allowing those other rather thick orchestra parts to shine trough, just such such a joy to listen to

La cantata "Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe" (BWV 156) de Johann Sebastian Bach es una obra conmovedora. Compuesta en Leipzig en 1729, refleja la introspección y la esperanza en medio de la mortalidad. El movimiento de apertura presenta un diálogo entre el oboe y la voz solista, simbolizando la conexión entre la vida terrenal y la eternidad. El aria "Endlich, endlich wird mein Joch" es un destilado de emotividad con melancólicos tonos de oboe. A pesar de su sombrío título, la cantata culmina en un tono de resignada alegría, reflejando la fe que Bach infundía en sus obras, incluso en medio de la adversidad.

I am a victim as well, I can not resist the exceptional Bach recordings downloaded by my favourite 'Netherlands Bach Society.' It is late in the evenings when I get to have the time to dream in Bach's celestial glory. Beauty to the mind... oh, what a consolation!

For me, the only reason humans devised music was so that Bach could perfect it and set the eternal standard. He developed a language that communicates the ineffable to us mortals.

Execuse me, but may I ask where's the name of oboe solo performer mentioned? For some strange reason I only found singers mentioned by name in description. And sorry, but first two minutes are indeed the best and most interesting part of this recording. Excellent job with sound, phrasing and wonderfully tasteful creative embellishments, magnificent display of skill and deep knowlegde. Definitely deserves recognition...

Herr was Du wills is one of my favourites. I wonder however at what speed this should be executed. This great performance seems a bit fast. Perhaps I am wrong ? Is there any way we can find out what Bach intended in relation to how fast it should be ?

First heard the Sinfonia of this piece as an organ solo on CZcams by Paul Fey and others. A commenter gave the name of the Cantata. The organ solo is known as "Arioso" in the U.S. From Chicago, U.S.A.

did Bach use the theme from this sinfonia in the second movement of his harpsichord concerto in f minor or vice versa?
I can't say for certain b/c I don't have materials to prove one way or another, but I would bet it was in the Harpsichord Concerto first. After all the vast majority of the b minor Mass is nothing but pieces from Cantatas.

Not everything of even great composers is great. There are things of Beethoven that are weak and things of Bach that are boring. Yet I adore these two!
Well, unpleasant and conflicted are exactly the sentiments that Bach intended to convey in the second movement, so it was deliberately written with a syncopated bass line. In most cases with Bach's vocal works, the music and text complement each other, so it's very useful to look at the lyrics to aid understanding of the music.

Mortensen is displaying his love for the music and his deep understanding of it (see the accompanying short video, Mortensen on Bach Cantata BWV 156). Yes, he is a bit idiosyncratic, but there is nothing wrong with his movements and expressions. And I would guess that the musicians appreciate his passion.

OK deze uitvoering is goed maar verder niet. En dat ze uitgerekend een matige countertenor (alt) hiervoor vroegen, is verbazingwekkend. Wij krijgen acuut gordelroos als we die volstrekt overschatte Engeltjes horen. Vreselijk!
