Off the coast of South Africa, a small group of orcas with an apparent taste for shark liver have been taking out great white sharks since at least 2017. And, honestly, that’s not even the strangest thing killer whales have been up to lately.

My dad worked at Sea World San Diego as a maintinence worker for three decades. He had to fix enclosures and other things at the park. His rule tho was to have animals off exhibit if he was doing work because he didnt want to be bothered (it happened once with penguins and he said they bugged him with their curiosity). So one day dad is working on the orca stadium enclosure and the orcas are supposed to be behind a gate in another tank.
Dad is standing outside where the audience can be fixing a sprinkler that shoots water at the audience. The orca team didnt leave a spotter even though dad said to. The trainer / handler usually should be present in case of an incident. Well, the orcas aren’t dumb and knew the pattern. So when dad was working he looked and saw one of the orcas LEAP OVER THE GATE. Did a free willy and got over that security measure into the stadium tank. Dad noped out of there as it made a bee line to him and told the trainers what happened. They didnt believe him but dad said it was true and had a good arguement about his safety. Keep in mind, this is years before blackfish.

In the 1980s there was a trend in the Pacific Northwest where orcas would come up to small boats and rub their snout on the boat. It didn’t matter if the boat was underway or not, it simply had to be barnacle free. It later turned out that the orcas had some sort of parasite that they were getting rid of and boats were the easiest way to do it. I observed this behavior first hand when I sailed out of Friday Harbor on my 13 foot catboat and encountered a pod of eight orcas. Each one of the adults took turns rubbing their snouts against the bow of my boat, shaking the boat tremendously. It was simply terrifying. I dropped the sail early on to make the boat more stable and hung on for dear life. When the orcas were through, they came up to the boat and allowed themselves to be petted, as if they were trying to make amends for scaring me half to death. I’ve had one other experience with an orca doing the same thing but it was a lone male and by then I knew what to do and the experience was not as frightening. He also allowed himself to be petted afterwards. The behavior stopped by the 1990s. Orcas still approach boats, particularly sailboats, but the snout rubbing isn’t something they do anymore.

Most of the boats targeted are small sailing yachts aka sailboats that the orcas know can be disabled just by ripping the rudder off. One guy was just tryna go fishing. Ive noticed a trend that when people hear the word yacht they automatically think of those gigantic party yachts or like the bezos super yacht. The yachts being sunk are close to the size of the orcas themselves. Any average joe could save some money for a low end sailboat.

The people would lose their minds and make a fuss, and the dolphins would all sit back and watch the people getting mad. They were just doing it for the feck of it to get a rise. That was kind of confirmed when they tipped one boat with a mother and child in it, who screamed. The dolphins all swam over to keep them up, pushed the people and boat to shore... it was close to shore...and never did it again. Like teens. And you can't for example, exclude snakes, bc then you would be missing like half the reptile tree that came after it.

I was out paddling around in my pal''s canoe!!! Suddenly I heard POW and saw a small fountain in the water near me !!! I thought someone was shooting at me , then I saw an Orca breach just after the splash !!! I realized that it was the whale breathing !! He was quite close , so I back--paddled away . The orca followed ,came right over to me , then swam under the canoe about a meter down ,I thought he was going to rub the bottom of the boat and maybe turn me over !!! I did not want to get et ,so I pulled the paddle up and stayed dead still Guess he wasn't hungry 'cause he just swam away !!! I stayed quiet for another 5--10 minutes , then paddled close to shore and quickly back to the dock. My job was fishing then . Longlining for Halibut and Black Cod Sometimes an Orca would come by when fishing was good , They would swim along with us about 10--20 feet down and deicately pick the fish off the hooks as they came up . We would yell and slap the water to try to chase them away , but they would stay till they were full , sometimes as much as an hour !!! Very intelligent beasts !!!!

You'll probably h8 me, but anyway; I used to work on a tuna longline fishing boat, circa 1990's. If the line were cast too shallow, oftentimes many blue whaler sharks would be recovered dead. It was not uncommon that orcas would fish the line ahead of us, and sharks would have their livers 'kissed' out... on occasions where we caught tuna, their heads would often show up (once again) with the body 'kissed' off at the very final pre-cranial vertebrae. A formidable creature, is the orca.
