- The Nintendo 64 controller is well known for having a signature 3-pronged design. Nowadays, there are companies like Retro Fighters and Hyperkin that make versions of the N64 controller with a modernized redesign (i.e. 2-pronged design). But, did you know there are actually a few companies that made 2-pronged N64 controllers back while the N64 was still on store shelves? In this video, I take a look at 3 of these examples and give my opinion on them.

The concept of the Alpha 64 is actually good. It's such a shame Nintendo didn't revise the controller.
Yeah definitely. If they did something like how PS1 added new analog inputs to their existing console, that would've been cool.

I really enjoyed this video. I love seeing people talk about strange and unique controllers that I don't see very often. This is why the Brawler 64 and the Tribute 64 controllers are excellent alternatives to the traditional N64 layout. I love the original N64 controller but the other two I just mentioned are great modernized takes on the concept.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah I also prefer collecting weird controllers over games or special edition consoles and stuff like that. I have 2 Brawler controllers as well, and I love them. Usually my go to since I don't want to put any wear on the OEM and the Hori controllers.
I have Retro Fighter's Duelist controller. It's neat, definitely quality. I've been waiting for them to finally announce their "Big Announcement Mystery Item" for 359 days. I'm hoping that it's their GameCube controller, but Bluetooth.
Having the two analog sticks would be cool if say one analog stick showed up as the d-pad or the yellow buttons depending upon what the other analog stick was doing.
Yeah I assumed that's how it'd work, or maybe the end splitting into 2 plugs and letting you use the dual stick mode that way. Would've been really cool. Hope you enjoyed the video!

Yeah weird controllers are my favorite thing to collect. And yeah the muffled audio is something I'm trying to fix by the next video. I've been looking into sound deafening foam or using a mic. Thanks for watching!
Honestly the best thing about the N64 controller or at least most N64 games is that it made the D-Pad and L button were useless. Cuz if you hold the controller the way you are supposed to, which is by the middle and right side, it was a very functional controller.
Really you could cut off the left side of the N64 controller for the amount of times that either of those functions were useful for 95% of games.
The one and only time that I remember using the L button was to better center the camera in Harvest Moon 64. And the only time I used the D-Pad was for movement in RE2. Other than that I don't remember using either of those functions of the controller for any other game on the N64.
That's actually a really good point. Splitting the controller up like that probably forced players to get used to the analog stick instead of sticking with the D-Pad. I remember using the D-Pad for movement in Kirby 64 and Mischief Makers, but those are 2D side scrollers so that makes sense. As for 3D games, I think most did use the analog stick for movement, but there were games like GoldenEye and I believe Perfect Dark also used the same control scheme that let you use the D-Pad for moving and the analog stick for looking. There was also the occasional 3D game like Turok that used the D-Pad for non-movement controls (In this case to toggle on/off running). Seems to be that 3D platformers used analog stick for movement and face buttons for actions, and 3D shooters included a more modern control scheme that used the D-Pad for movement and analog stick for looking.

Yeah I didn't want to spend money on something that I'd never touch again. But at the same time, I'll probably never use any of the controllers I talked about in this video again besides maybe as a joke HAHA.
Really great video, I'm really impressed that it's your first! Like most people, I'm sure, I prefer the Hori pad over anything else. That stick just feels so nice, maybe even better than the GC's. Subscribed!
Thank you so much! And yeah maybe it's because the tension in the Hori Pad is slightly lower than in the GameCube stick and makes it glide a lot smoother. I actually didn't notice that difference until now.

I saw the thumbnail and thought it would be something that Derek from SSFF would enjoy, but finding out that it isn't two N64 controllers stapled together makes me question what the point is.
Ohhh yeah his video on that is really fun and I want to make one of those Frankenstein's controller mods one day. I guess the point of these is to just make the N64 controller more approachable for people who were put off by the trident shape.

There was not a single game which made use of all three prongs during gameplay. This is why I never understood why people were claiming about the design
Yeah I personally like the OEM controller, and I think most of the criticisms in terms of the layout are from people who don't give it a fair chance by actually trying it out. I can understand that it can be daunting if someone's never seen it before though.
Great first video. I owned a few of those and then just got rid of them as they were rubbish. I liked the original n64 controller. Back then the analogue stick was too large in depth to have it on the left of the controller and also the legendary status of the snes controller layout forced Nintendo to keep the snes design to some degree for 2d games incase the 3d games did not take off. Nintendo put huge amounts of effort into the controls of Super Mario 64 as they were so worried the jump to 3d would prove too much, hence the design. If you watch early gamers checking out SM64 at the trade shows you can see the serious lack of ability of most players to control mario, but they soon learnt the controls as the stick was so precise.
Thank you! I didn't think about the depth of the analog stick making it harder to implement and making the design similar to the SNES controller but that totally makes sense. I'll have to look up the footage of the early Mario 64 demos. That sounds super interesting.
Great comment. I remember people complaining about the controller when the N64 came out since it didn't look like anything else, but it was very good after a few minutes of play. Even at the time I thought people complaining about the N64 controller weren't trying very hard. This was years before the analog sticks would get tired and janky.

I know there have been N64 controller mods where people have joined two controllers together into one shell, so that you can use it as a dual stick controller for Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer, or in GoldenEye; but I'm honestly surprised that none of the companies who have produced modern 2-prong controllers like the Brawler64 haven't made a dual analog stick model to B take advantage of the mode in those games.
Yeah I thought the Nyko 64 was like that and would have 2 plugs, but sadly not. I wonder if dual stock N64 controllers would ever be a real mass produced product or if it's too niche to be worth selling.
@@SodaCanTablet Very niche. The only way I could see it working is if the controller could be used as normal, but have a two-analog stick mode and an adapter cable.

The problem with the n64 controller is the analog stick would loosen overtime to where it wouldnt work. The 3 prong design you can get used to but when the main movement stick would stop centering, you had to get a new one.
Yeah that's why I don't use my oem controllers. I don't want them to wear down so I use my Brawler 64 as my main controller instead. Hope you enjoyed the video!
I never understood why people felt they needed a different layout as the none standard ones generally were compromise in some way. Try dual wheeling them or using dpad and stick at the same time and you start getting real issues with most. The games on the N64 were designed for it's unique layout so I guess it's not surprising that others give issues.
Yeah I agree. It's like if you were trying to play Guitar Hero with a racing wheel. The games are designed with the controller in mind, so all N64 games should be fine with the oem layout.

I actually have a Hori Mini, and it’s by far the best authentic 64 controller from that era. My main gripe comes down to personal preference, which is that the thumbstick doesn’t have enough tension. The extremely similar GameCube controller has a lot more resistance, which is what I was expecting. Also, the d-pad on mine slides around a bit like the cutout is too large for it. It was gifted to me by a friend over a decade ago, and I think the price has actually come down a little since then. Still, in 2024 I think most people should probably go with the Retro Fighters Brawler 64, unless having a truly retro experience is that important.
Ah yeah that's a good point I agree with. It feels like it takes half as much force to move the stick. I agree with the Brawler 64 being good for most people as well. I have 2 myself and love it. I'd love to get a Tribute 64 one day since that's modeled after the HORI Mini and see how they compare.
I wish that companies making controllers nowadays (like retrofighters) would replicate the Alpha's design, it looks great for Goldeneye and Perfect Dark using tbe d-pad to walk and right analog to look around. I know people would want to use both analogues like modern controllers, but it's still better than only one analogue in the retrofighters control
Yeah while I love the Brawler 64, the layout doesn't really lend well to play FPS games. Maybe if they mirrored the layout they can release that as an FPS version of the controller lol. Thank you for watching!

A brand called Pelican made THE BEST third party N64 controller at the time. They don't exists anymore, and I can't even find a picture of the controller online. But it was similar/identical to the Makopad.

Yeah there's actually a whole sub category of games that's compatible with the 2 controllers. If you want to learn more, you should check out the Dual Analog Controller N64 Games video from the Stop Skeletons From Fighting channel. Great video and great channel overall and was a huge inspiration for me starting my channel.
That Alpha is honestly dope. I do not like its D-Pad, though.
I thought I'd hate the d-pad on the Alpha the most, but the Boomerang one feels a lot mushier.

In principle, The INteract 64 is "okay", but HATED the crooked/lopsided control stick.
The nYKo dualstick would be cool to have simply for the novelty.
Love the horipad. It's the ONLY controller that the GCN stick feels acceptable. Third party GCN sticks just are overblown, overscaled and overly sensitive.

The brawler 64 is another dual handle controller granted it is pretty new but i love them
I love the Brawler too! It's my go-to for when I'm playing for fun. I didn't include it in this video though since like you said, it's a newer controller and I wanted to focus on the ones that were sold while the N64 was on the market. Hope you enjoyed the video!

All Nyko had to do was put two connectors on the cord and run it like 2 controllers combined in one housing.
Yeah it's shaped like a regular controller too, unlike those Frankenstein's N64 controller that's just 2 OEM controllers stuck together. It'd be really cool to see someone mod it to be that way though.
@@SodaCanTablet I just looked these up and they are too rich for me. They don't suck all the way though because you can go southpaw and move with the d-pad (Everyone uses WASD or arrows on keyboard) and have analog on the right for aiming which is more important (except for strictly left handed people).
I do wonder how you would get along with the modern retro fighters, apparently I hear they're alright controllers, and since they're brand new they're still being made
I actually have 2 wired Brawlers and they're the main controllers I use for 90% of games haha. Mostly because I don't want to wear out the analog stick on any official ones, but I do genuinely like the Brawlers. For stuff like GoldenEye, I prefer using the oem controller though. but you can always get the wired model for the retro feel.

Underrated.
I got a blueretro 64 adapter expecting it to magically improve anything being able to use modern controllers, but nothing is going to save you from the awful sensitivity of some shooter controls and some of them being forced inverted ;___;
The firmware can be adjusted to different layouts so goldeneye controls like a modern shooter but I haven't gotten it to work yet.
Ah maybe when you manage to fix it, it'll be better? And I feel like if there's firmware to adjust the sensitivity, there would be one to invert aiming for you as well. Does it work well for other games that don't require as much precision?

I hate the controls schemes on both N64 and PS1. They just did not have good controls figured out yet. Halo on Xbox was a huge game changer, it finally made 3d controls great on a gamepad

Remove the switch on the bottom of the alpha & swap the controller board for modern switch compatible button mapping. Bam, both sticks can be used on modern Nintendo switch games.
But all I want is to play the Zelda
game series from the N64 & up.
That's a good idea I haven't thought about. I don't have a Switch, but I remember a lot of people complaining about the button mapping for some of the N64 ports. Like how whenever you have to play the Ocarina on OoT, it's a bit weird. Using this controller would probably solve that problem since it has the N64 style face button layout with the 6 buttons in addition to the second analog stick. Hope you enjoyed the video!

Which SuperPad? Hahaha jokes aside though, I don't really like how it feels because each of the directions are slightly longer than the OEM d-pad. When I play fighting games on pad, I tend to slide my thumb on the far edges of the d-pad instead of in the middle, so the longer directions make this type of play style a bit less comfortable. If you tend to just rock the d-pad from the center, you shouldn't have an issue with it though.

The alpha does look the coolest. If you ever get to try out the Hori pad one day, you'll understand why. The analog sticks are top of the line. 👌
I had a few Super Pads and Alpha 64's and they were good but the analof stick durability was terrible on both.

Based fellow LEGO Racers enjoyer. I actually bought a PAL version of the PS1 game solely because it included that poster loool.
@@SodaCanTablet I built replicas of Turbo Charger and Johnny Thunder's cars, that's how much I love LEGO Racers.
Same with Johnny Thunder. He was my favorite. I didn't have the seat base in the correct color, nor the 2 black exhaust looking pieces on the back, so I just used a 4×5 tan plate with bricks for the sides and a pair of 2540 pieces for the exhaust. I'm hoping one day I can get all the parts to build all the main racers.

do a follow up with the retro-bit tribute 2.4 v2, and the retro fighter brawler 64 nso edition. i have been burned so many times on 3rd party crap, but i want to believe 🤣
i did get an older version brawler 64 usb, i basically hate it. it feels hollow and the dpad is no bueno.
The only modern controller I have is the Brawler 64 (I think V2 but I'm not too sure). I'll put that idea on the back burner for now until I get more. Thanks for the suggestion!
What are you supposed to do with TWO analogue sticks? 🤷🏿♂️
If you're playing a game that uses the d-pad and the stick, you'd use the right analog stick so your left hand can use the d-pad. If you're playing a game that uses the face buttons, you'd use the left stick so your right hand can be free to use the buttons. Thanks for watching!
@@SodaCanTablet But wait, can't you do that same thing with the regular Nintendo 64 controller?
Yeah, but then it'd be hard to press the remaining buttons. Like for Goldeneye, you have to reach your thumb over to press the A and B buttons if you're playing with the Solitaire control scheme. Another example is if you're playing Turok, the run button is the d-pad and you have to sort of reach up to press that. Not too big of a deal honestly but it can be inconvenient.
@@SodaCanTablet with GoldenEye, you didn't move your left hand to the center part with the analog stick? I thought everyone did that. 😅 But then again, I was a little kid back when the Nintendo 64 was out- so there's no way I was gonna be able to stretch my hand across the controller like that.
@@TheEarthRealm Haha I move with the d-pad and aim with the analog stick, but I think you're probably right about most people not doing it that way since the default settings aren't set that way. I prefer the accuracy for aiming instead of movement since I think it's more important. I'm also more used to moving with left hand and aiming with right since I grew up with games like Halo.
Retro Brawler controller
I have 2 Brawler controllers, but I decided not to include them in this video because I wanted to focus on the controllers that were sold back in the day, and the Brawler is modern. I thought since there are so many other videos covering the Brawler, there isn't really anything for me to say that hadn't been said before. I do kind of regret not including it though in hindsight. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed the video!

Yeah I don't like the stick and how slippery it feels.
I had this really awful N64 controller from I think Performance that only had the middle handle (none of the outer ones), but also the analogue stick was just a pointy stick since the original nub fell off forever ago. Tried playing MK64 on it, and it was the most painful way I've played anything. The best part, the stick stopped moving left and right, then died completely!
Oh man is it the other SuperPad 64? That sounds painful you were basically being poked with a needle whenever you used the stick. Imagine playing the Mario party wiggle the stick mini games with that damn haha.

HAHA thank you I'll take it as a compliment. Yeah I haven't made any "serious" videos before this one, and I wanted to give it my all since I've wanted to make videos about retro games for a while. I think I also have a meticulous work process and scripted everything out which helped a lot.

@@SodaCanTablet that'd be a start lol. i'd suggest getting a lavalier mic on *__* the ones with the really long cords and sometimes 2 of them for around 15-30. i'm not a content creator or anything, but i have used mics before. you'd be surprised how good some of them can sound for so cheap. read some reviews if you decide on it.
