The Spinners ~ It's A Shame 1970 Disco Purrfection Version

- "Rubberband Man" got me thinking about the very first Spinners song I ever heard, "It's A Shame" from 1970. Looking back, "It's A Shame" could have been construed as a lament for the neglect the talented Spinners suffered while under the aegis of Berry Gordy. Written by Stevie Wonder, Syreeta Wright and Lee Garrett with Wonder producing, it was released on the VIP imprint, considered a third rate label in the Motown stable. Wonder wrote the song about his breakup with Syreeta and turned it into gold. It peaked at #14 Pop and #3 R&B, but the label did nothing to ride the wave of popularity and the Spinners remained hitless after that. Their first hit on the charts was in August 1961 with "That's What Girls Are Made For", peaked at number 27. They spent their first ten years in Detroit recording and foundering on Motown, but moved on when they realized that Berry Gordy did not have their back. Their soon to be Atlantic label mate was none other than the Queen Of Soul. Aretha Franklin put in a good word for the band and they were signed to the label. Their initial recordings, helmed by Ex-Motown producer, Jimmy Roach were not remarkable and were shelved on the advice of label head Henry Allen who then approached hot producer Thom Bell and offered him a production deal for any artist he wanted who was in the Atlantic stable. From a hastily typed listing, Bell noticed the word "Spinn" as the last artist on the very last page and asked if it was the Spinners. Once it was confirmed, he brought them to Sigma Studios and the first song they recorded was "I'll Be Around" which spent five weeks at #1 on the R&B chart and peaked at #3 Pop. They had finally arrived.

The 70's Rule ! THE greatest decade for music, ever. I know, I was there for all of it !
I was there too and wholeheartedly agree!
Absolutely 💯
Agreed.
No doubt!!
I wish I had a time machine the 70s were the best years of my life..🕺🎺🎹🎷🎸
It’s a shame music like this doesn’t exist anymore!
Yes it is
Hell Yes! It’s a low down dirty, SHAME!
I know, it's a crime, really.
@@williamhill1030
You got Boz Scaggs and Evelyn King on the mind when making that statement, didn't you?
???
😂😂😂😂😂
But it does exist, we keep it alive and in existence!
My Mom wore this 45 OUT! This just gave me chills!
The first 60 seconds of this song are some of the most soulful licks to any song ever. Perfect.
So agree, really pierces the heart!!
Amen to that!❤
Congratulations 👏🎉 Spinners.ROCK AND SOULIN HALL of FAMERS. 53 YEARS AGO today AUGUST 1970.
once this fine song finds a place in your brain, it settles itself in and then it never leaves.
Let's not forget....STEVIE wrote and produced this gem. It's a shame to not keep that in mind.
I never get tired of this version. Fabulous.
Listening to the Spinners reminds me how good music use to be. "Much better" than it is today!
53 YEARS AGO today AUGUST 1970 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 Congratulations To the ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME. DAMNIT YOU DESERVE IT.
I love this music.I feel young again.
Good music I will never forget the 70s
One of The GREATEST bands OF ALL TIME!
This song
Came out 50 years ago and still is power. Now THAT'S music.
I was young girl when this song came out but this music was what made me what I am today, singing my heart out still...and in a life long love affair with this music!
So True!!!!
Love thise 7ps 8ps music best ever
Classics through the ages
I was asked to leave Princeton after beng caught going back and forth to Harlem and Newark for drugs....still earned my BA/MPH and several of the Princeton class went far in their careers, but I had 47 years marriage and all my kids and grands are well educated and happy, Everyone played this trying to shame me,but the strong survive!
Late 60's to mid seventies was the best music ever. Wish I could go back to that time and never leave.
Me too... (with a tear in my eye...)
Me too. I grew up on this music.
Me too... Let us know when, and if you're going. We'll all be up for that, especially after the past year of this pandemic! 😂
OMG Yes ❗❗ I feel the same even though I was born 1965 🌺🕊️🌺🕊️🌺🕊️🌺🕊️🌺
@@brawny48 me too I say it all the time and would not want to take one damn thing with me, I was just fine with what little we had, well actually we had a lot but it didn't cost a damn thing !!! 😥😥😥 I miss the 60s and all of the 70s.
Saw them perform live in Atlantic City many years ago and they performed this hit and all their other hits. They sounded exactly like they did in the 70s. And they were dressed to kill. This music will live forever. Glad I was born and raised back in the day. The music was far better.
Best soul song ever made. Everything about it is just 💯
To me.....this is a banger, makes me smile everytime 😂
One of the best tracks of that era. True classic.
OMG Tell it like it is AMEN! ! This awesome classic just moves your soul in the right direction do you agree? MEMORIES WOW! !
This is what I call real music
Definitely one of the greatest on the verge of a breakup song!
I could just sit in my room and listen to this music for hours....
I keep telling people ,that the best musicians are the wonderfully black people. They sing so beautifully, I wish I could go back to my Era in the 70”s, I’m Puerto Rican and I loved R & B, Funk, soul music, it’s tears your heart out , Damn !!!,!, I love it !!,!
I'm 24 and I swear if my generation had this music as their foundation when it comes to us making music they would have such a greater and fun time making music the inspiration would be limitless.
YOU'RE SO RIGHT BABY!!
Stay switched on !!
real music 💯
26 and I agree, but allot of our generation did grow up on this music since our parents and the internet was such a big influence I found this song when I was 14 on a mixtape my friend gave me
Your generation just doesn't have it. Why
Yes!! The 70s was my time l am 66yrs old l love Motown and R & B l grew up in the late 60s to all of the 70s l wouldn't trade my time of that life back then for know other generation. Motown is forever ❤️ the word love was just about in all the songs 🎵 lyrics that l grew up lessening too.
Back n da day will never be gone for those who like me. Grew up in that Era. I am still there after these years. And I will never walk away from those wonderful years. When life was simple and beautiful for me.

Love this song! The Spinners were made for this song!
This song takes you there and put you in a trans
You have it right. Puts you in a trans. Outstanding 😃😃
That Stevie Wonder!!
Stevie Wonder GOAT, wrote this, their only ginormous hit, and then they went to Atlantic Records.
Boy we danced to this in our Platform Shoes!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!True
i keep coming back to this one Im 72 yes I was there when Motown came and boy did they kick ass
I wish I had a time machine i would go back to the 70s
OMG, This version is beautiful, I Love the spinners
Tonya Gratton Hell to the yeah! ! Those were the good old days 4REAL! ! We were so lucky to be born to experience that awesome era and some do you agree?
I used to sit on my auntie's porch in Detroit in the Spinners would be rehearsing all their greatest hits in the basement of a lady across the street in my little sister babysitted for wow I used to see all the Motown ass cuz I lived a couple blocks from hitsville USA what's the time what's the time
Brings me back to a time when we all got along and just danced in the clubs with people of all colors and cultures and just had fun. Music is the universal unifier.
Yes!!!! You are a rare breed! I love you whoever you are! People were so different, simple pleasures for every culture to enjoy!
I hear ya!
It's a shame that music today has lost its way and is nowhere close to what it used to be ! Great song with great lyrics .
Mr DJ thank you for this song. I remember the summer of 1971 visiting my family. I saw these guys perform. They were fantastic. My girdt time at a live concert.
This one of their best songs they sang when I saw them in person in L.A. in 1973! They were GREAT! I'll never forget them and at present I'm 69 years old!! God bless them!!
Growing up listening to this music you just couldn't beat the great old days it's a shame what the world and the music has come to today
It's definitely a shame that there are virtually no more good R & B songs like this.
I agree there’s no rhythm like it. We need music like that again might bring people together.
Stevie Wonder is amazing
Can I go back to the 70's again please!
Robert Jones take me with you!!
Ditto !
Right behind ya Rosa..70s even had a smell that was awesome..
Hey Robert, Rosa, Luke and John... Don't Be Leaving Me Behind, I'll Be The Fifth On That Soul Train and Right On Time!..
"Wishing You Love, Peace and Sooouuuuulllll"
I'd like to go back as well. Perhaps cross paths with a young Chaka Khan! Problem is that I was born in '75, so I would be in some corduroy overalls with a bottle of chocolate ovaltine. Happy as a mowfukeh 🍼🍫
The 60's and the 70's R&B will eternally be unsurpassed, an extra additional tribute to the awesome potential of the African America spirit that began to assert itself slowly, exploded once the Delta Blues in Mississippi germinated, followed by Beale St. Memphis, New Orleans scene, Be-Bop, and so on, and so on.
in the 70's, this song would be playing every morning on the radio. My Dad and I would get to the kitchen about the same time. He would have his coffee while reading the paper. It's amazing how a song can imprint time!
Apsolutely fantastic !! So many great memories. Certainly brought a smile to my face 🕺💃💙

Yeah such a shame!! This WAS MUSIC!!! Great, Classic, Real talented singers and musicians!!! Original stuff!!!!
I can't believe it but I just learned a few days ago that Stevie Wonder wrote this song. It makes perfect sense-Stevie's beautiful lyrics and the Spinners and Funk Brothers killing it. Perfection!
That’d be Stevie on most of the instruments as well. Everything but guitar and bass despite some rumours he did play everything. He also produced the track.
Back to the roots .Just getting on love power. More Stevie wonder.
@@martinwilliams6627 That’s why he is Stevie WONDER
Stevie Wonder was one of three lyricists for this timeless song - The Spinners are what makes it perfect...
Absolutely Love the Spinners! Especially the song "It's a Shame" Love the Lead singer and his great voice! No music like this today or ever!
Bobby Smith I believe.
Actually it is J C Cameron. He also sung the funeral song in the movie Cooly High..
Thank God for CZcams I can travel to an era I never lived but still connect 💯
This was one of my favorite hits by The Spinners...It’s A Shame this era of music is gone...There will never be any greater music. The kind of music that speaks to your soul

Great music I loved it back in the day and I still love it today
SO OUTSTANDINGLY RIGHTEOUS! BEAUTIFUL man .
The Funk Brothers in all their glory, including James Jamerson. Wow!
YES. American treasure!!!
I used to think a Tamborine belonged in the back of a Church pew, but in the hands of Jack Ashford...it took on a whole different meaning as an instrument.
I don’t care how long you’ve been playing bass. Jamerson is un-duplicatable.
One of Stevie Wonder’s greatest songs.
funk brothers best out there
Glad you remembered the name James Jamerson. He undoubtably was a big precursor to the sound of Philadelphia. Never tire of hearing those jamming horns.!!!!
One of the greatest songs ever made. I remember when this song came out. I was 10 years old. I loved it then, I love it even more now. The Spinners rule baby!
Me too.
So True The Spinners were GREAT!!!!!
So was I. That’s also the year when the Jackson 5 hit the scene. Their was a lot of great music that year. I also remember If My Heart Could Speak by the Manhattans.
I'm 72 and that's the best times of my life was in the 70s
Great vocals, and great music! The seventies were amazing for me! Love the Spinners!
Imagine separating the voice from the music of today's so called singers. There is no auto tuning here. True talent.

It's a shame that Motown did absolutely nothing with the Spinners even after this incredible record. The Spinners finally became famous after they left Motown. But unfortunately to this very day. They have never won a Grammy.

Love hearing G.C. Cameron's voice so clear and out front in this version. After this monster hit, we can only wonder what magic they might have had later, had they all stayed together.
Simply put, it is a shame that they are gone!!!!!!

Just crazy talk. I love this music I was born in 1960 and great music is still alive and well. As it will continue to be!!
@@docbrown7679 Yeah, but no it's not. Music is trash today. I was born in 82, and music of my past is way better than the shit today. It's so detached from reality, substance, and soul. It's only getting worse. Music of my generation is 90s rap and R&B. But even I can tell you that they're only as good as they were because they grew up on music of the past. For me 60s, 70s, 80, 90s had some of the best years of music.
@@furiousgtribal4325 there was pretty good music from male musicians up to 2008 or so. Coldplay killers snowpatrol and john mayer. Then something happened and it switched to very young female acts. I guess if you're a talent agent the cross marketing into fashion for female acts is much lucrative. But they all sound the same and formula driven production.
I like the long version of this song; I never heard it before!
