  • Hyundai Mobis, the “parts and service” arm for South Korean automaker, is developing the e-Corner System, or better known as Crab Walking, were all four wheels can pivot 90 degrees, allowing the car to drive perfectly sideways into a parking space.
But driving sideways is not all that it can do, this e-corner system is capable of performing four impressive maneuvers, which are pivot turning, diagonal driving, zero turning, and Crab Walking.
    1) Pivot Turn - is where the rear wheels turn 90 degrees opposite of each other to swing the back of the vehicle around.
    2) Diagonal Driving - is where all four wheels turn the same direction at an angle while still moving forward
    3) Zero Turn - is where the front and rear wheels turn opposite of each other, to perform a spin-in-place turn.
    4) Crab Walking - is where the wheels turn side on and can drive sideways either way.
This e-Corner System, is considered the key mobility technology needed for autonomous driving cars, which will allowing them to park and turn much easier than they do now.
This technology may look like some futuristic prototype system that we will never see on the roads, but Hyundai Mobis is looking to start taking orders, and wants to achieve a production unit, by 2025.
    Thanks for watching.

Hyundai has been working on in-wheel motor system for more than a decade. But making completely watertight motor case, high price, cooling motors in the wheels, and increased unsprung mass are still some very important issues for the in-wheel motor system.

    - To be clear, you're not allowed to use any sort of assistance like this or cruise-control or anything else during a road-test, so you'll still have to learn to parallel-park, 3-point-turns, speed-control, etc.
    - 2:14 Yeah, these concepts have been known for decades, but for some reason, car manufacturers never bothered to actually implement them en masse. 🤨 Sure, it might be harder to implement, but it's INFINITELY useful _and safer._ 🤦

  • @andrewashmore8000

Good idea in theory , but in practise it takes away too much space from the internal of the car. Also the motors are housed in the wheels , this puts extra weight in the wheel area , not good for handling or ride comfort. The concept is good though , there might be another way to achieve a similar outcome

This, in my opinion, shouldn't be common in the automobile industry. You can't say you can't park and have a license, so retake the driver's test if you can't park. The only reason I believe they are good is because this idea is only for disabled or lazy people. What occurs on the off chance that they drive one more vehicle with no e-Corner Framework, what? Additionally, doing that diagonal driving makes it appear suspicious. Saying you can't turn to overtake is like that. In the event that you can't stop or surpass for what reason are you in the public street, you're placing others in danger!

Tech bullshit for people who shouldn't be allowed to drive a car.
Wheel masses are enormous, lots of suspension geometry for good drive quality can't be implemented, so much expensive technology in the most stressed area of a car. Look to a normal suspension after 10-15 year's. Lot's of stuff is rusted or worn out. If you want to replace a bushing or joint, you have to disassemble so much. 😢
