I don't know if you remember but in the Friend Ship episode, when they're stuck in the trap, Pearl tells Garnet "I'm just a Pearl. I'm useless on my own. I need someone to tell me what to do." which makes so much more sense now after knowing that she was literally made to be a servant.
and also in rose's scabbard, when she said "everything i've ever did, i did for her. now she is gone, but i'm still here".
And also when she fought Sugilite!
I really like that Peridot ended up beating up Pearl in the fight, because it showed that that's not what matters to prove Pearl's worth. In a lot of media about discrimination, the minority has to "prove" that they're equal to be accepted, either by winning a competition or proving in some other way. But the fact that Pearl lost shows that she doesn't have to prove her value by winning some arbitrary competition, because her value is intrinsic
Remember the very first episode when Pearl said it took years and years of intense training to learn how to summon her spear, while Amethyst said hers just shows up when she needs it? It’s because Pearl was never supposed to be capable of summoning a weapon in the first place. It’s why she’s using a sword in most of the flashbacks to the Gem War.
“🎵Deep Down,
You know,
You weren’t built for fighting.
But that doesn’t mean you’re
Not
Prepared to try🎵”
Damn! I watched this showed as it aired, and have watched several channels reactions to it, but I always learn new connections/comparisons 😊
That's a very good observation!
Pearls being seen as lesser and weaker Gems is likely a reference to the fact that pearls in real life aren’t minerals but mineraloids. The fact that pearls are the only gems not based on minerals, since in real life pearls are organic matter (specifically calcium carbonate) from oysters and other mollusks, but culturally are considered to have the same value aesthetic properties as gemstones.
Seeing Amethyst cheer for Pearl when she stands her ground and takes unique pride in who she is despite society labelling her as lesser feels so good considering their past tensions
But really like, looking back to how Amethyst felt like "lesser" especially compared to Pearl, who always seemed like so above it all by comparison (without being malicious about it ofc), it's interesting to learn that by Gem society standard she'd actually rank so low, and could prolly relate to Amethyst's feelings of inferiority- and in fact, prolly couldn't tell Amethyst felt inferior cause they both express their feelings so differently
Pearl punching Peridot in the face will forever remain a jaw dropping moment 😂. I can still remember how shocked I was when I watched this episode for the first time 😂
I forgot how quick these episodes go
I remember all the hiatuses and it made it feel like it took so long to get peridot
Yep. People who choose to watch the show now are lucky they don't have to worry about those painfully long hiatuses we've had to endure 😂
Thank goodness you possess the capacity for media literacy, especially when it comes to Steven universe of all things. (Seriously the amount of hate this show gets for downright ridiculous nonsense is mindboggling)
Yes, of course you can't really blame Peridot for initially thinking the way she does, even if it's wrong. I won't spoil anything, but I think it's pretty obvious at this point that she was created and lived her entire existence up until this point with an extremely rigid understanding of the way things work. And at the end, she makes an attempt to open up to Pearl and understand her and their situation better, that's called character development baby!
Agreed!!!
i simply love the animation on this episode, everything feels just so well-rounded
Fun fact about the outros - the background changes based off of where they are in the episode and the weather
Would you call it gem racism? Classism? Eh regardless yeah that’s pretty much how gems are back there. It’s implied to have been that way since before the war so it’s a pretty long running system
More classism yea, since gems are all the same race
The fact that Pearl was able to bring herself to fight after berating herself in “Friend Ship” was beautiful
Personally, I believe every episode in SU had a purpose - each one was either further plot development or contributed to a character arc. Hardly any of them would be considered filler episodes because we learn more about the characters in one way or another. Hard to make a series where effort is put into each episode nowadays.
I AM A PEARL!
Ah, yes. The casual gem racism.
This episode was less about a plot development episode and more like a character growth episode. But they needed to hash it out their own way (hence the robots) and maybe it wasn’t necessary for the plot. But it was needed for Peridot
Definitely agree with you abt peridot not knowing any better. Homeworld's society and ideals is all peridot knows, and she def has some kind of extra grudge for pearl specifically just because of them chasing peridot all of season 2
Everyone always makes this mistake. It isn't racism, it's classism. They are a classist society. People call it racism because each gem only has one purpose, but that's just how the species works. Each different gem has different powers, and their uses are determined by ability. They segregate based on social class, not race.
And I don't think anyone with half a brain blames Peridot in this instance. Most people would agree with you. It's very clear that Homeworld is set in very specific ways that we would find problematic, and teaching someone to think differently from what they've known since the day they were born is difficult. This is her first step towards growing into a better gem.
9:25 yes...that is indeed the point like you said thats character development no one here blame peridot for the way she thinks because clearly you see by the end of the episode that she is willing to move forward and grow when proven wrong on all fronts
7:07 Subspeciesm?
probably
Pearls on homework are slaves which is the reason our Pearl is so upset and insecure and are in a desperate need of to be in a position of authority. I find that interesting - thank you for your fun reaction on my birthday
Happy birthday! 🥳
Homework is my favorite planet
I don't know if 'slave' is the exact right word here, concidering almost every gem is born into their position and doesn't get a say you could say *every* gem is a slave, Pearls are more like maids/butlers/domestic servants. It's true they don't get to choose who they work for but that's basically the case for every gem.
Happy birthday! You and another person in this comments section have the same bday, what a cool coincidence! :0
11:16 and also starting on the plan for stopping the cluster
11:50 I'm glad you had a regular good rxn
.
(Yes the journey to the core finally begins)
My favorite arc
Who doesn't love race based caste systems?
I know right? Theyre SO awesome!! We all need a BIT of racism in our lives. In a truly just world, racism will be granted to EVERY man, woman and child.
Technically they're both gens, different gems but same race.
So It was more of a classist thing.
@@Paolo-ec2si Race is a human specific term, it can't be applied 1 to 1 to none human entities, but Gems are a species, not a race. For humans, races are primarily about common ancestry, physical characteristics, and culture, so in that regard there are arguments to made in favor and against them being attributed to races. Ultimately what it comes down to is how the media wants them conveyed, which isn't really easy to decipher considering how similar if not identical racism and classism can be. Race and Social Class typically go hand and hand, only difference being that social classes are something not innately tied to one's physical being, unlike race. So given that alone it's hard to really suggest different gems types should be attributed more to as different classes then different races if you had to choose between the two.
Peridot arc had best episodes of this series imo.
Great reaction!

Funnily enough, _Peridot_ isn’t even that highly ranked (Peridots are third or fourth lowest iirc)
