  • Denmark's queen has unexpectedly announced her abdication in her traditional New Year's Eve speech.
Margrethe II will formally step down from the throne on 14 January.
That will be exactly 52 years to the day of her ascension to the throne in 1972.
The 83-year-old monarch will be succeeded by her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik - who will become Frederik X.

      @OctaBech Před 6 měsíci

@evaristus4821, while it's easy to underestimate the role of ceremonial figures in modern governance, a deeper examination reveals a more nuanced reality. As Uffe Elleman-Jensen, a prominent Danish political figure, aptly noted, Queen Margrethe II played a pivotal role in Denmark's diplomatic and business endeavors.
Consider the intricacies of international relations and trade. The queen's state visits often served as a catalyst for opening doors in foreign markets, a notable example being the Indian market. Her presence and the allure of royal engagements, such as the opportunity for Indian businessmen to be photographed with her or to attend meticulously orchestrated royal dinners, provided a unique form of soft diplomacy. These events were not mere social gatherings; they were strategically planned to facilitate political dialogues and foster business relationships.
This approach reflects the historical evolution of constitutional monarchies, where the role of royalty transitioned from rulers to symbolic representatives and servants of the state. The Danish monarchy, in particular, has been instrumental in this transformation, recognizing that their purpose is to serve the country rather than to be served by it.
The queen's abdication marks the end of an era where her diplomatic acumen and ability to navigate complex political landscapes with grace and poise were invaluable assets to Denmark. Her contributions, while perhaps not always conspicuous, were significant in shaping the nation's international relations and trade.

Queen Margrethe is a few years younger than my mother, and my mom remembers her when they were young women at the velodrome in Copenhagen. My uncle was racing along with his best friend, and things really heated up after midnight when the races got hot, and the room got steamy. Because my mom had family in the race, she was in the center of the ring, as was the crown princess and her friends, and true to danish fashion they were all drinking and smoking and cheering quite loudly and having a great time out there. She was a fun lady, that is to say the queen, and very down to earth.

As a Dane, I can only say I respect our queens decision to step down at this moment.
Let's not forget that she has held the position for over 50 years and is currently (until January 15. 2024), the longest ruling female monarch.
As a result we get a relative young king with many years left in him, to take care of all the responsibilities that come with being a monarch and he in turn, he retains a "hotline" to the previous monarch which to most of us, will still be our queen (we will actually end up with two queens so we are a bit spoiled).
This is how leadership should be parsed on in both monarchies and politics.
Not abrupt, but in due time with ample opportunity to transfer responsibility in an orderly fashion with the option of continued counseling for some time.

I also think people who seek to shirk responsibility and prefer to choose their role in life should not have positions of authority. Especially when we can elect people into power who then abuse it and become figureheads of national ridicule.
On the other hand, those who take up their role and hold to becoming a part of living history like the late Queen of England, who passed the crown onto her son, should be praised for having the backbone to carry both a nations pride, legacy, and history.
We cannot slide into relativist living. There must be standards that do not change, or change so slowly that the modern world can hold itself accountable to those who went before us.

Denmarks Queen is a very progressive lady. She removed all those titles and this is another example of just how forward thinking she is, a thoroughly modern lady, not afraid to make the hard decisions. Very much to be admired!

I think, the death of her dear friend QEII and her serious back surgery early this year, and the limitations it has brought, made her reconsider, as she has always been vehement, that Danish monarch do not abdicate. Indeed, our last abdication was 500 years ago, and that 1 wasnt exactly voluntary!
She has always been about duty above all else, she would only step down, if she believes, she can no longer do the job to the fullest extent, and that Frederik will serve us better.
She has been our Queen all my life, and despite what some might say (tho very few here in Denmark) she has always worked very hard and served the country and us very well. I have no doubt, Frederik will do the same. They have always been of the ppl, not above the ppl.

A wise person will always know when it’s time to pass on the sceptre. Her Majesty is doing what is best for her kingdom.
Besides, the Kingdom of Denmark is in great hands, with an educated and intelligent, ascending king, and his brilliant Tasmanian wife [who became fluent in Danish (and from my - Swiss - perspective, being fluent in seven languages, Danish is a very tough one to learn)].
