    My husband says “ What is Steve sowing”….and then promptly asks if I’ve done the same😂! Being on the eastern side, we’ve been battered with winds and torrential rain the last week, so I’m behind. I’d say we are a month behind you, as we’ve not been able to plant out our tender plants (12°C yesterday 😮), not much help when you’ve a greenhouse full of plants raring to go. Thanks for the reminders and your allotment and greenhouse are testament to your hard work and great planning.

      Unfortunately you're not the only one to have had the high winds and rain, we had a nasty squall, which flattened my broad beans and knocked over a lot of the trees in containers and lots more, quite unusual. We are waiting for roofers to fit a new roof and they are weeks behind. We have been lucky with temperatures though, hovering around 9-10c for most of May. Hard work not so much, but I do have some pretty good plans now after 8 years of refinement : All the best - Steve

    I have lost half of my seedlings so far to the slugs this year. I gave some tomato and chilli plants to my friend and hers are now 3 times the size of mine. I can not sow quick enough to replace the eaten plants.

    Hi Steve, I have a question for your next Q&A.
    Do you know much about photoperiodism? Do you factor in the photoperiodism of certain plants in your planting plans?

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem

      it's a very interesting subject and not very well documented so far as I can find. The influence of day length, light intensity, plant age, plant size at critical day lengths, temperature and stress on a plant can be quite complex. I'm actually working on a spreadsheet right now to figure out how I'm going to minimally manipulate day length and temperature in the greenhouse (since I have heat and light in there) this winter, so maximise yield, avoid plants going to seed, break dormancy early and all sorts of other objectives. I already do all the basics in my plans, but I think there's exciting potential to go further : All the best - Steve

    I was told here in NL when we had our allotment by a felow allotmenteer that yellow courgettes freeze better than green ones - never tried out the theory but maybe it does work! XxxX

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem +1

      I'm growing Zephyr this year, not a true courgette, much firmer, more like the summer squash it is, but it's shaped like a courgette. My wife prefers it so much that it's the only 'courgette' she wants me to grow now. It might freeze well, but we don't freeze much, certainly not squash : All the best - Steve

      @@SteveRichards we have cold nights here this week. Lows of 7 degrees! I've not planted my outdoor squash or polytunnel cucumbers out yet. This happened last year and I held off till second week of June and regretted it. I may plant them today and cover the squash with cloches made from 5 litre water bottles at night and fleece the cucumbers ? I know you used 30 l buckets last year but I dont have enough spare at the moment.
      What do you think? All the best -Alison

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před měsícem +1

      For me there's no sign of summer weather arriving for weeks, so it's always a difficult call. My squash are out and unprotected and they are sulking, but they normally pull through. Early June up north is often worse than May. I think protected with cloches and fleece everything will be fine though : All the best - Steve

    You might like to try a tray of spinach with your grow lights in tge conservatory Steve. I get frustrated trying to grow it full sized but if I sow thick and wait for true leaves, keep it in the back bedroom, it works.

    Thank you Steve. I sowed another couple of boxes of autumn carrots. I will try those Sugarsnax soon too.
    On The Peoples Food and Farmers Alliance they were saying we should now be relying of France for carrots but they are not available so they are coming from China. There will be a serious shortage of basic crops we can grow easiky here. We in Wales have thousands of acres just left...its almost sinful.
