From the DVD "Live on Soundstage 1980," John Prine plays "How Lucky" with John Burns. This is a terrific DVD if you are a John Prine fan. John Prine's site: www.ohboy.com/
I found John when I was in high school and he's been with me for over 40 years. How lucky can one man get? Indeed...Rest in peace, John, I already miss you...
I've watched this a million times. Sitting in the backyard of your boyhood home with a good friend, drinking a few beers and playing some good music. How lucky can one man get?
Today I walked down the street I use to wander Yeah, shook my head and made myself a bet There was all these things that I don't think I remember Hey, how lucky can one man get. I bronzed my shoes and hung from a rearview mirror Bronzed admiration in the blind spot of regret There was all these things that I don't think I remember Hey, how lucky can one man get. Today I walked down the street I use to wander Yeah, scratched my head and lit my cigarette Well, there was all these things that I don't think I remember Hey, how lucky can one man get. Today I walked down the street I use to wander Yeah, shook my head and made myself a bet There was all these things that I don't think I remember Hey, how lucky can one man get. Hey, how lucky can one man get. Hey, how lucky can One . Man. Get.
My older brother in law used to play John Prine records when I was a young boy.. I use to always wonder why he played that stuff. As I grew older I began to understand why. I'm 56 this year, and John is probably the music I play most. I completely get it now.
What a blessing to have been in a universe that had a John Prine. His music made me pick up a guitar and find my voice. God bless, Mr. Prine, you're a treasure!
alwaysomething@gmail.com that’s awesome!! I’m from NL livin in Alberta and been listening to and playing his music a long time. Seen him a few times too. God love him and the joy he’s brought to this world. Peace and health to him as he fights this virus
"How lucky" I am that I discovered John Prine when I was 23 back in 1973 and he taught me to live inside my head with my illegal smile and where I am my own best friend.
Can't believe this song is that old. I got turned on by Prine in just the last 5 years or so. Never paid that much attention to his music, but I appreciate him now so much! Wish I would have seen him play live back in the day.
I've been a John Prine fan all my life since I was just a baby. I even got one of his CDs for my birthday. the album i got was from 1991 its the Missing Years. He has been an influence in my life by the music he plays. didn't even know there were so many Prine fans out there
It's great how John has the confidence have someone pick with him who's technically a better player, coz he knows he's the big dog here. John Burns is very deferential, as he is when they play Paradise in another part of this video. I think of John as the Mark Twain of our lives.
"I wondered if I wanted to do that for the next 30 or not. I finally decided, what the heck, I might as well." Thanks for making that decision, John. Thirty years later, we all still love ya.
My buddy used to play his songs back in college. I always liked them. The 40 years later he passed and only then did I decide to really check him out. Kicking myself now. What a treasure.
I too hadn't listened to John Prine in many moons. Then I found these wonderful songs again. John could make a song smooth as velvet. With lyrics and a Melody that just hits you to the core. A Great American Songwriter. Authentic. A rare treasure.
This was originally the only way I could hear this song after finding him through Colbert Report. RIP John. I've never been this gutted by a celebrity death before.
Johnny Burns A guitar driven singer/songwriter with a flair for the humorous and odd. "Johnny was my partner in crime, putting my touring and recording band together, writing songs with me and recording three albums with me as well. One of my oldest friends and favorite guitarists." - John Prine
damn, Im 60 yrs old, and its been years since I've thought about John Prine....spent the last 24 hrs listening to his music which I loved (and love) so much. Dude don't mind tellin it true, like it or not. Just hat I lost touch for so long. GO JOHN PRINE
Got to see John in Davis, CA last November a few months before the plague took him away and turned the world upside down in so many other ways. I was a fan of his since I first heard Sam Stone on KZAP radio so many years ago I can hardly believe it. Rest In Peace old friend, your songs live on.
When I'd play one of his songs (espec. Sam Stone or (surprise) Christmas In Prison, some one person would always say, "who is that??". That must have happened so many times across the usa and the world since. What a great legacy and an eternal gift. God Bless John Prine (and Steve Goodman, and Johnny Cash, RIP.) jaslinc1
I cannot find words to describe the dept of my love for John Prine's artistry and insights. It will always be a true regret that I never had the opportunity to see and hear him perform live. I know some day when I hear him, I won't be sad, but these days I still smile when I hear him, but then smile turns upside down.
"Prime Prine" was a great way of introducing yourself to his music! I learned to play guitar by listening to his records and in recent years tried to thank him for that, but I don't think my message ever actually reached him.
I found John during the pandemic. Don't recall him being a big deal here in the UK although I'm sure many others knew of him. So sorry I missed him during my growing years.
Wow. I never heard the song until the Tree of Forgiveness. Just heard him sing it at the Opry House in Nashville on New Year's Eve. It's been stuck in my head for months. LOVE IT
@jordanthecat Same here. I found John Prine fall of '73 and it was a perfect fit. I had been playing guitar a while but not musically talented. Then John Prine revealed what I had been missing. His music, his words, his heart. Dylan (called him the best songwriter on the scene) and Prine were all I ever needed.
if your are a musician God bless you...cause. you realize the magic you possess when you can bridge the gap playing for people from other countries who dont speak english but they love American musicians. Prines songs can do that.
So true. A buddy of mine, a die-hard Stones and AC/DC fan, listened to a Prine CD I'd burned for him a number of years ago, and has since become a huge John Prine fan.
Wow..you can pick Sir...my favourite sound in music...hope you enjoyed embellishing more beauty on those beautiful songs and fleshing out John Prines music!
I've seen John in concert many times over the years, but I don't recall ever hearing him play this song. I can't understand why really, because it's such a great song.

Took me over 60+ years to find him, how lucky can one man get?

I found him after he passed away. I had heard him but wasn’t that familiar with his music. I wish I had listened to her long ago too!

R.I.P. The best singer/songwriter that has ever lived.
One of them. There are many.
@@richardperkins5046 ok Richard, there is also Bob Dylan & Greg Brown & Bill Bourne. Did I miss anyone? 😉

@@richardperkins5046 I’m guessing you’re Canadian., lol! Gordon is amazing but he simply does not occupy the same time zone as JP

That story is pretty good

I discovered John thanks to the how lucky duet with Kurt Vile only last fall. I will keep exploring the Prine song treasure for the rest of my life..
One of the best songwriters of all time is Mr. Prine.
I was 10 in '73 when I first heard John Prine. Sold, sealed and delivered forever...
John Prine was a national treasure

"Mark Twain of our lives." I just love that. Great observation.
Always fun to play one on one with John. Great grooves. - J Burns
John Burns yer no slouch tho :-) Do you still perform in Chicago?
+roger strukhoff No, I live in Albuquerque now and play with John once a year or so. Not sure how I lost that cushy gig!
John Burns Once a year is better than zero! I have a good friend in Santa Fe, so maybe I can hear you play sometime out there in NM.
I just can’t get enough of this guy, John Prine you are absolutely awesome. You are loved by many and I love you too!
What a beautiful soul John Prine was. I found about him I think in around 1985, it was like striking gold
"I wondered if I wanted to do that for the next 30 or not. I finally decided, what the heck, I might as well."
Thanks for making that decision, John. Thirty years later, we all still love ya.

MTV Unplugged never had him? What an utter loss. Remember, this unplugged acoustic is 1980, a full 10 years before MTV Unplugged.

King Prine! Holding court. Would that we were all born with his brain chemistry. 😂
Play him when you're feeling down, he certainly wasn't.
