I love how all the Replika have a bird designation. Mynahs, Adler(Eagles), Kolibris(Hummingbirds) Eule(Owls), Falke(Falcons), Storch(Storks),Elster(Magpie) and Ara(Macaws). This all fits their personalities as well as design. With, for example, the storks having longer legs, Eagles being noble etc.

Not sure how common these are outside of Germany, so:

A Paternoster is a cyclic type of lift that never stops.
There are two shafts, one with chambers always moving upwards, one with chambers always moving down. (As you can see in game when they're repaired.) Fairly widespread in Germany in the past, especially in government offices and such. Nowadays mostly phased out due to obvious safety concerns with a few exceptions.

This is the big one, a bunch of very quickly flashing text.
    The long passages of text:
    On the right:
    Beyond the sun,
in the darkness behind the stars
I saw the face of a god
    a shape and color that
    words cannot describe.
The six pages of the world I saw
unfolding and the light devoured me,
I had become one with the nothingness/void,
where life and death are meaningless
Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
    Must die unheard
    Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
    Shall dry and die
    later, on the left:
    and I saw
    the sixth seal breaking
    and the earth quaked
    and the sun blackened
and the moon was as blood
and the stars fell from the sky
    In the center:
    [Who are you?]
    [Surrender.]
    in big and red:
    DIE
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _
The talk about the sixth seal in particular are reminiscent of the apocalyptic bible verses of Revelation, 6.
Also god damn that was A LOT, if you've spotted anything missing please hit me up.
The Hyades is a star cluster that plays a pivotal role in the canon of the king in yellow (and a lot of cosmic horror overall).
And in fact that passage (between "Strange is the night" and "Shall dry and die") is an incomplete form of "Cassilda's Song" from Robert Chamber's book "The King in Yellow" (which revolves around the play of the same name that drives you mad if read past Act I).
However, of note: The poem contains passages NOT present in this version, namely references to the cosmic, fictional city of Carcosa.

    Chapter 2: Liminality
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _
We've learned about C.G.Jung's synchronicity last episode, and now it's time for another high concept idea, this time from anthropology (mainly coined by van Gennep and Turner). Which is REALLY outside of my competencies, so I'm just summarizing my understanding off the wikipedia page. Please consult an anthropologist of your choosing for better details.
It describes a state of "crossing over" between two states of social being in the form of "rites of passage": Separation from an old social order (metaphorical "death") and incorporation into a new one (or the same order as a changed person) (metaphorical "rebirth"). The most notable example would be the process of puberty.
It DOES touch on C.G.Jung somewhat - which I doubt is coincidnce. Whereas Turner and van Gennep describe a social liminality, Jung images a liminality related to time and personality, as an individual passes through phases in its life and develops its own identity and being.
If anyone is familiar with Tarot cards, the "Fool's journey" as an example of such individual liminality will ring a very familiar bell!
And if anyone is familiar with pop culture horror, you will definitely have heard of liminal spaces - the uncomfortable, disorienting spaces between the folds of space and time.

    _ _ _ _ _ _ _
This one is surprisingly easy to explain.
Know how words lose their meaning if you say them often enough? This is that.
As well as the specific term for the visual counterpart of that effect.
Complex shapes will be harder or take longer to recognize properly if stared at for a long while, the complexity slowly decomposing into the smaller parts that make up the whole.

      @claytonbarham8755 Před rokem +20

loving these comments and explanations! If you don't mind, there are two things I wanted to ask about.
      1) Do the bird names assigned to the Replikas (i.e. Owls, Magpies, Macaws, Starlings, etc) have any significance in German culture that might explain how they were assigned (i.e. why are the office drones/cooks/cleaners 'owls' while the shy construction workers are 'macaws' and the cops/soldiers are 'starlings')?
      2) I believe that the painting that we see in the management office with the Kolibri, and which has appeared in many cutscenes, is a famous painting that had some popularity in Germany ("The Isle of the Dead", I believe). Do you happen to have any knowledge into that painting or insight into what it might mean (beyond what its title makes obvious :P )

@@claytonbarham8755 I'm glad it can be helpful!
      1) Some definitely do, while I'm unsure about others.
For example, I am unaware of any cultural significance to macaws or hummingbirds (especially since those are exotic birds not usually found in Germany), while owls fit well into their general theming of being wise and well-read (tho that originated from ancient greece I believe).
Storks are sometimes seen as protectors, somewhat more closely tied to christian belief due to their behavior of eating snakes.
There might be some theme to Elster, tho I suppose we will see about that, as magpies are seen as thieving animals first and foremost.
The one giant connection to German culture is Adler. The eagle is the coat of arms of Germany and especially nowadays strong symbol of the government and its agencies and institutions. As such it is a perfect fit to be associated with administration and bureaucracy.
      2) Yes exactly, Isle of the Dead ("Die Toteninsel") by Arnold Böcklin.
I'm not all that well versed in the arts so take the following with a grain of salt.
Some interpretations see the painting as a requiem for european culture of the 19th century. A lot of German authors, some very famous ones like Friedrich Dürrenmatt, use the appearance of the painting in their works as an omen of bad fortune. (For example, in Dürrenmatt's 'The Judge and His Hangman' (Der Richter und sein Henker), the painting hangs in the room of man who recently went missing.)
I think it's also of significance that in the sequences where the painting appears at the end, it flashes through the different versions painted of it in order, before starting back at the original version and repeating to a degree.
So the two big themes here are death/mourning/foreboding and somewhat of a time or story loop.
Also of note: In the sequence at 1:33:48 another painting is shown, that is often mentioned together with the Isle of the Dead: "Gestade der Vergessenheit" by Eugen Bracht. (Roughly translates to "shores of oblivion/forgottenness".)
It is often mentioned together with Toteninsel, as it shares some of its characteristics (multiple versions, strong symbolism, etc.). However, whereas Toteninsel actively deals with death, it seems Gestade der Vergessenheit focuses more on an after-death kind of theme. According to some interpretations, the painting was made as a "dark fantasy of the end times, in which no humans are around anymore".
The ego-perspective beach sequences like the one at 1:48:00 are set on this painting, with the split cliffs in front of one and even the detail of countless skulls scattered along the shore.
My interpretation is that it describes a journey.
A central theme that has been surprisingly subtle so far is the King in Yellow, and a central location of that whole mythos is the cosmic city of Carcosa. Some of the text passages in the Kolibri sections (I'll annotate my original comment with this as well and put in the proper translation, since I couldn't put my finger down at first) are direct references to "Cassilda's Song", a poem from Robert Chambers' "The King in Yellow".
      For example:
"Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
      Must die unheard in
      Dim Carcosa."
So I see the paintings as locations on route to Carcosa. One arrives at the shores of oblivion, crosses over to the Isle of the Dead where a gateway (graves in the original painting, but looking frightfully like the gateway Elster walks through during this first Ending sequence) then takes them to Carcosa - or so they hope, perhaps.

It just sounds so depressing to have your friend dying in your arms, and for you to realize that the memory they feel so happy to have remember you suddenly discover must be false, and are also eerily the memories you have regained yourself.

I think that’s because Ariane’s bioresonant dream is probably affecting the place she was supposed to be assigned to. She may be in cryo but her dream is still affecting reality. Even though Alina was probably dead for a couple decades she was sent to the facility because Ariane felt some sort of connection to her. That caused anyone who she might think about to slowly transform. I also think the flesh is her cancer from the failing reactor.

Elster has had no fear the whole time. Sshe doggedly keeps to her purpose, to fulfill her promise. This has fascinating story components like the virus that has affected them all and those memories of past selves/lives. I can't wait to see how all the mentions of bioresonance fit in to the final story and the rest of the stories of Elster and Ariane.
    *spoiler*
When the light of her eyes went out, I couldn't help cry. That was beautifully done.
So everything that could have kept Elster'x Gestalt memories from surfacing was not done... Ariane had never opened that envelope. Poor Elster suffering more mental anguish than her unit type was designed for.

I love how after you jumped down the pulsating meat hole the game literally turned into Silent Hill, the enemies, atmosphere, and even music, there is no way the devs can deny they weren't heavily inspired by Silent Hill for that section, also those large enemies with the giant helmets looked exactly like the Big Daddy's from Bioshock, even those big guns they used looked virtually identical to the rivet guns used by the Big Daddy's in Bioshock, still this is a really cool game tho, nothing wrong with taking a few liberties from other games.

Man, I didn't know that Kolibri units can be killed by chaining frequencies. All I did was tune to the first frequency that appears when you enter the room (which pinpoints the real Kolibri amongst the clones and also reduces the constant damage you take from the transmission) and shoot it. The details this game has are amazing.

@jonathondavies336 "The King in Yellow" was a made up moral panic/conspiracy theory with no definite authorship as I recall. There were writers who incorporated it into stories before Lovecraft [again, if I recall correctly]. However, it is likely that most people using it as a reference point [game developers, for example] may use it as a reference to the most well-known usage of "The King in Yellow" by Lovecraft.

    • @hippocampussashimi7819

Further, cosmic horror and more visceral (meaty) connotations have come to be linked to Lovecraft (and thus "The King in Yellow") regardless of these perhaps not being the most accurate. But these are points of reference nonetheless.

I think it implies one of the ways Ariane was able to survive: eating Elster. I think its a plausible explanation for how she was able to survive several thousand cycles after the 3000 mark, the point in which their supplies were already dwindling. As an in game mechanic that helps push players towards the Promise ending, Elster can regenerate damage from critical levels even without healing items. Replika's are capable of self regeneration so long as they don't shut down. Even if they shut down! Unless you burn the bio mass inside their frame, they can get back up indefinitely.
So, they had all the energy they needed to supply this ability for Elster aboard the Penrose. Even if its never explicitly stated that she did, its something Elster would do out of her love for Ariane. Cutting off parts of herself for love's sake. Its a fitting dark thought and fitting for the universe. Ariane, pushed to utter desperation on top of suffering radiation sickness, would eat the freely given biomass and drink the oxidant blood of her lover. And as replika flesh is actually inedible for a human, while it might help her survive a few more cycles it must have compounded her suffering. Truly, this was Hell.
You could suppose the cryogenesis pod might have made it so food wasn't an issue, but why then reference eating Replika flesh? No reference in Signalis is there without reason, or just as a nod to other survival horror/anime media.
It adds another spin to the flesh metaphor throughout the game. Not only representing the cancerous growths caused by the radiation leakage, the lovecraftian references and the King in Yellow, but Elster literally and metaphorically has to cannibalize herself to be able to continue forward. To cannibalize herself for Ariane's sake.

Another Elster, but not Elster 512, I think! That one had a gray chestpiece, not orange. Additionally, the ship cannot be confirmed to be Penrose 512 because all places where the number should be are either obstructed or suspiciously missing- the tail's number is covered by snow, the number under the insignia in the cryosleep room is too degraded and covered in some fluid to positively confirm by the few pixels of white paint still visible, and the number high on the wall is simply not there. The missing number alone is the strongest indication, as there is no hint of anything having destroyed the marking either, suggesting it had never been put there.

Two of the texts I could make out from the interference at around 38:30.
    1. A bible verse: Revelation 6:12
I saw the sixth seal break, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black , and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth
    2. The "Cassilda's Song" from The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers:
Strange is the night where black stars rise, And strange moons circle through the skies,
Songs that the Hyades shall sing, Where flap the tatters of the King,
Song of my soul, my voice is dead, Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Sadly couldn't find out where third text came from. It says:
    3. Beyond the sun, in the darkness behind the stars I saw the face of a god, a shape and color that words can't describe. I saw the six sides of the world unfold and the light consumed me. I became one with the nothing, where life and death are meaningless.

32:45 I think you might have been able to get the 12mm snub nose revolver earlier with the X-ray machine (in Part 1), as it had one inside. 33:40 never mind.
1:32:05 I see the game chose the "Gainax Penguin" ending.
1:33:45 that is a painting called "The Isle of the Dead" Various artists, including H.R. Giger, have done their interpretations of it.
1:36:00 I guess the creator gives you the choice to continue or end right there?
1:46:41 ah, it's the MEMORY ending. The "meat" represents cancer tumors, and Ariane is trying to get you to put her out of her misery.
1:48:00 the beach scenes could be the Artifact speaking with Elster/Ariane.
In a strange way, I wonder if the *Druuna* comics had an inspiration on the game creator. There are obviously some *Neon Genesis Evangelion* influence here... we shall see how this ultimately ends.
EDIT: after watching the 3rd part, I think the Devs found a clever way of making any interpretation a valid one. While it is heavily leaning to *Jacob's Ladder* (ie you are trapped in Araine's memories), in Part 1 Elster walks through the gate that Adler is seen protecting. I wonder if they crash landed on a planet with an Artifact that amplifies Ariane's bio resonance, which is why it is both a dream and reality. The LILY ending is activating the Artifact, which absorbs Ariane's mind to become the Red Eye (Lillies are given at a funeral, as they are symbolic of life growing out of the dead) and granting her eternal life.

Really sad, if you really think about it. The worst part is that they actually used to be humans at some point from what i can gather.

The saddest part of the "New Game" was that Sao hadn't read the info about living with an LSTR unit and was unknowingly doing the worst possible things... The info packet was unopened.

13:59 I didn't miss the fact that one shotgun blast dropped both of those enemies. So, it's good to line them up if you can, then down them with an accurate shot.
39:10 "Warum bist do hier?" = "Why are you here?"
    "Gib auf." = "Give up."
    "STIRB" = "DIE"
