- Dream Theater was a very influential band for me. I credit them with being the first band that got me interested in playing any music that wasn't classical. I listened to pop and rock music, but always wrote off playing it as too simple. I grew up listening to orchestral cinematic soundtracks (mostly Star Wars), and that was the music that inspired me to play. Then, I heard Scenes From A Memory.
My brother told me I needed to listen to this album. It was a "concept album", which meant nothing to me at the time beyond that it was going to be weird. I almost stopped before the first track was finished. It started with background noises and talking, then the singer started with this unusually high voice. I was not a convinced.
Then I heard Overture 1928 and Strange Deja Vu.
My mind was blown. This couldn't be a rock band. It sounded so orchestral. This singer had a weird, high voice, but owned it and rocked harder than anything I had ever heard. I was totally hooked. I listened to everything I could find by them, found every band they claimed as an influence and claimed them as an influence. I started to try to pick out the individual parts and constantly found myself drawn to John Myung's bass parts. I had been thinking about picking up the guitar, but this album convinced me that the bass was more than root notes, and could be way more fun.
I've been wanting to record a song from this album for a while, and finally sat down and listened to it straight through before settling on Home. Overture 1928 is my favorite track, but Home just has so many great moments for the bass that I had to learn it.
Enjoy.

Can't believe you covered Dream Theater and RWBY! You're freakin' awesome, man!
What can I say? I am a complex man with many and varied interests.

+TheDp1965 Thanks! Sorry for the long breaks between videos. I've been very busy lately, but I'm hoping to start putting out content more regularly, and even a few videos involving groups I play with coming up.
fucking sick!!! great cover, bro!! \m/
🤘🏽
asldifkasldf man! freakin' awesome!
Great cover man! Im currently working on this song as a bit of practice. Im super impressed with how clean and in the pocket your playing is!
Thanks! This one took me a while, as it has so many parts, but that's what it's all about: taking the time to get it right, so the technical skills can transfer to other things. Good luck with this song. Post a video when you're done!
Yeah man anyone can play the notes, but what makes a truly great bass player is to recognise the groove and clarity! May not be for a while, I may do something else before then but I hope you get to see something man! Keep up the playing!
You're so dope
That bass intro reminds me of Tool
It is... Forty six and two
Are you playing John Myung's signature model?
or is it a regular 6 string Musicman?
btw - amazing cover and such an inspiring story
keep rocking brother!
Thanks for the kind words! It's not his custom model. I'm pretty sure the string spacing on that would be a little too tight for me. This is just a standard Bongo 6.
at first i thought u tried to rock too hard, halfway, its just nice
Love that thumb technique in the intro. Explanations? I can't play like that :((
All I'm doing is swinging my thumb at the string so that I hit the string with the side of my knuckle. You can see in the video that the motion is driven by rotating my forearm. Make sure your thumb is above the fretboard, travelling diagonally, so that you are both strumming through the string towards the next higher string, and you are also hitting the string into the fretboard for that added attack. It's a smaller motion than it seems, but very effective for adding a nice front end to your notes. If this explanation isn't clear enough, let me know and I'll try to give a better explanation.
Amazing ! The unique difference between you and myung is that myung is a little bit calmer than you lol but great cover Loved it
"A little bit". Hahahaha. Yeah, you could say that. He's also far better than me. He can play this entire song in the middle of a three hour set, while this is pretty much my entire day.
hahaha great cover anyways you inspire me !
@@KeithLewisMusic JM must learn how to enjoy his music from you LoL. great cover. Loved it.
Where did you learn it from. Please can you provide tabs
I learned it by ear, but this is a popular enough song, that I'm sure there are plenty of tabs around for it.
Imposible for me!
Three years before I recorded this, I would have said the same thing. All it takes is practice. Keep at it.
Alay
MasyaAllah
I'm in love with your bass. but it's probably super expensive
+Chuck Dynamo dont know where you are from, but in my country its about a 12k bass! O.o amazing one, though
Amazing cover brother, keep it going and in case you want to collaborate reach me on facebook :)
beautiful bass, too much dancing, not that much playing! But thats a hard one! ;)
You exhaled instead of inhaled on beat 3,564. Shame on you!!!
