- In this video we are doing an experiment trying to germinate green coffee beans that are used for roasting. There really isn't any information on this topic so we thought we'd do an experiment for all the people wondering if it's possible.

I do a mixture of my own soil. I use indoor potting mix with vermiculite and coco core. It has been working extremely well for me for all plants and seeds.
Nice. It takes 3-4 years to start producing heavily. I have 2 five year-old trees. They produced once so far and they were covered with cherries. They are a messy plant and shed leaves frequently in the winter when they're indoors. The flowers smell great but they make quite the mess.
For coffee seeds I soak them in warm water over a heat pad from 24 to 36 hours then start them in small containers with my own mixture and also put that on the heat pad. The heat actually will make them germinate faster

Chad, I've got my first and only coffee cherry growing on a 3-year-old coffee plant grown from seed. I'm eagerly awaiting the red colouration and my first taste of fresh coffee fruit. I'd love to see how your seed sewing turned out after all these months.
Unfortunately the age of most green coffee beans that are used for roasting are simply too old to do anything with. I do know of people who have been able to successfully grow a coffee tree from these aged green seeds, but germination rate would go up tenfold by sourcing freshly harvested coffee seeds. I have a seedling coffee tree already planted in-ground inside the greenhouse, I've just never made a video on it. It's almost fruiting size and age now. I wouldn't be surprised if it fruits next season.
That's very exciting to hear about your success with your coffee tree! It gives me hope for mine. Thanks so much for the great comments you always leave, and the continued support!
So, where can I find coffee beans for sale? Any suggestions?
To be honest with you, fresh coffee beans are very difficult to find. Thats why so many people try their luck at green coffee bean growing. Unfortunately the success rates are extremely low and you'd more likely than not be wasting your money. If I were you I'd pay a little bit more money and find someone who sells the already grown coffee plant. Keep in mind that any coffee tree you get from anyone will most likely be grown from seed. This is how they are generally propagated. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful on this one. I'd maybe try etsy. Happy growing!
Arabica is supposed to be the hardest to grow from seed so it’s probably better to just buy the plant Other variety of coffee is easier
Did you have any success growing the coffee from seed?
Not a lick. Viability of the seeds is not good at all after the coffee bean has been sitting for long periods of time. My suggestion would be to find a very fresh coffee bean. I know that can be difficult to do, I've been there. I would say that the only reason potting mix wouldn't work out with a coffee bean is if its not fresh enough. Otherwise if you got a fresh one it'd be fine. Thanks so much for the great question! I wish the experiment had turned out with better results.
@@PlantFanatics That's too bad. Keep at it. It's well worth the effort once they mature up a bit in 1.5-2 years. They make a space feel very tropical, and the peeling bark adds that unique touch. Usually, you would need substantial girth on an ornamental plant to achieve that aesthetic.
Do you have any update?
We'll make an update video here pretty soon!
I tried that 2 years ago. All molded.
Same. Fresh coffee seeds are a must for successful propagation. The chances are slim to none for successful germination of older green coffee beans. Thanks for watching!
@@PlantFanatics I heard that coffeine in the seeds can enter the soil and prevent the seeds from growing properly. That is, some people may overcrowd a lot of seeds in one small pot to "increase" the chances, but the actual effect from that can be opposite.
Im guessing he failed all his seeds since this is part1 2 years ago it was made and part 2 doesnt excist :D
Yup, miserable failure. You need fresh coffee cherries to do this. 😂😂😂
