What started out as a PERFECT day and ended with lifelong memories I was excited to share on CZcams, I discovered the devastating realization that my BRAND NEW GoPro Hero 11 lost ALL of the footage during our ride through Iron Mountain Road. The camera just shut off. No warning, brand new, fully charged battery, and the latest firmware update. It. Just. SHUT OFF. =(
As much as I would love to re-record the ride, I will never have the conversation with my husband, @JordanRay and his reaction to the ride as a first timer. (I also had a file corrupt on my handlebar gopro) Enough is enough. It's time for a NEW action camera. Any suggestions?

I sold my GoPro stuff - I have gone with the Insta360 cameras for all my riding video - 2 360 cameras and the new Go 3. I've been using an Insta360 for 3 years now, no glitches... like used to happen all the time with the GoPro cameras.
We are in the Black Hills for our 5th summer here (retired). I ride Iron Mountain Road 3 to 4 times a week for 2 1/2 to 3 months - it never gets old! It is something different each time. I shoot video much of the time, but I don't have anywhere near the audience you have. Still, when we go back to Texas, I enjoy "re-living" the Black Hills rides thanks to those videos. The best way to ride Iron Mountain Road (from my perspective) is to start at Hwy 36 at the east entrance to Custer State Park and ride IMR north. The southern portion has great sweeping curves; the part you rode (from Playhouse Road north) is about the half-way point, and gives you all the really unique features, like the pigtail bridges, the tunnels, the hairpin curves, and the "splits" (one way, one lane - it's a real treat if you don't have slow traffic in front of you). Enjoy your time in the Black Hills. There are other great roads that aren't as crowded as Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road during the Rally.

Hey Jess, regarding Bison- a Yellowstone biologist told me the only “body language” bison give (besides pawing the ground) when they get losses is: their tail will stand up, similar to what you’d see when they pee. So if there’s a tourist getting close and their rail goes up, they’re getting annoyed and a change is about to happen.

Great Vlog, enjoyed seeing the beautiful scenery...again. The last time I was there the fog was so thick at Mt. Rushmore, the gift shop was giving out free pictures so we could see what we were missing!

Totally agree we rode the area end of September first of Oct. The foliage was stunning, cool weather and not busy with a lot of traffic. Iron Mountain road was our absolute favorite as well. For the same reasons you listed. One side note the week after we were there they got a lot of snow! So that can be a concern that time of year.
Great advice there, "ride to your skill level". There was a recent fatality of a rider that, "failed to negotiate a curve". Ride safe all!

Last time I was out there was with my best riding buddy in 2006. I don't ride any more and my buddy is gone now (RIP) but your video took me back and I thank you for that.

I'm so sorry you lost footage. I know what you mean about meaningful conversations. I wasn't able to do Needles highway when I was there in 2021 but I did do Iron Mountain Road. Loved it and enjoyed your video.

Shame was such a beautiful scenery and it seam the the real you was coming through the camera, and that stop through the needle was awesome nice to see a different angle other than the bike angle and seeing you two together makes it a whole lot different than other videos ‼️ 💚😎🤙

Lost track of the number of gopro biker vids I've seen lost on CZcams. I use a hero 7 but main one is the insta360 x3 which can shoot as 360 or straight forward action camera. As long as the memories are in your head you'll never lose them 💕

There should be a way on your hand controls to reset your fault codes. I know on mine it's holding the button the cycles through trip modes and the turning on the run switch. I believe you can reset limp mode from there too
I absolutely love my sportster and didn't want to give it up for something bigger. It just fits me so well and is what comes to my mind when I think of motorcycles. I don't know if Jordan feels the same but if he wants to get a little more out of his sporty and make it more highway friendly. I highly recommend uping the tooth count on his transmission sprocket or pulley. I changed mine to a 31 tooth front pulley and I can cruise at highway speeds without feeling like the bike is overly rev'd out. Bringing the RPM's down also helped it ride much smoother as well. I know people say that you will lose off the line performance but mine is a 1200 and it still has plenty of pull from a stop. Its not like I am drag racing the thing anyway. Just thought I would throw that out there in case he was looking for some more options. Keep up the great vids, I love watching them.

GoPro failure stories are all over the internet, so you're not alone. The company is doing something wrong or cheap in their manufacturing process or control logic. Maybe an opportunity for another company. BTW, my wife and I watch your vids on the TV and sometimes forget to 'like", though I try to add a "like" on my laptop. We both thought this video is one of your best in a long while. Best of luck!
We just returned from the Black Hills on Sunday after spending a week up there and rode the Badlands, Needles, Iron Mountain, & Deadwood! Such gorgeous views up there!!
Bummer you lost the footage, I hate when that happens. I'll say though that as a career broadcast technical professional I've seen it happen to the most seasoned videographer. That said, the more travel videos I watch, the more I see Road Glides which has me thinking I made the right decision. After 37 years of Guzzi / BMW ownership I pick up my RGU tomorrow!
My GoPros constantly fail, lock up, lose footage, lose connection with the remote. Drives me nuts. I’m looking for another solution myself but I have been fighting these GoPros every trip I take. Good luck with finding a solution. Safe travels and I hope you get some more great footage while on your trip. Thank you for what you do.

I would agree. Iron mountain Road is also my favorite. I'm heading out this Friday (driving 6Hours in my truck, NO CanAm-ALONE) to attend ZZTOP concert at Buffalo Chip with my BFF (she lives in RC).....Heading home Sunday just to head out again on Wednesday the 9th with my boyfriend. Ill be riding my CanAm and he will be on his Harley. We live close enough we have been to the Black Hills multiple times. However to go together on our bikes is more enjoyable, we treasure our quality time together on our bikes! Hope you find the right GoPro.

I live in Rapid City, SD. Just to let you know...Sturgis is toward the northern end of the Black Hills. Iron Mountain Road, Mt. Rushmore are considered to be toward Central part of the Black Hills. Custer State Park is very close to being on the South end of the Black Hills. So you guys covered a lot of ground. I used to drive on Iron Mountain Road all the time when I still had a vehicle. Nowadays? Not so much. Thanks for sharing.
For future riders, Iron Mountain Road has a lot of twists and turns, the highway splits into one lane going one way, and one lane going the other way. There are also a couple of a single lane caves you go through.

I live in ND. I've done the Rally at least 20 times since 1982. I've been riding an 06 Sporty for 17 years now. It's the best bike for riding the Hills, better than the 2 Baggers and 1 Chopper I had before. SD has perfected the speed limits on most of the Highways in the Black Hills. If you follow the speed limits and use your gears, you should be able to make most of the Canyon rides without touching your brakes EXCEPT the Iron Mountain Rode. It is truly a test of skill.
Hi Jess!! It was so serendipitous meeting you!! You saw my GoPro fail in real time (my fault though), but I too have had GoPro failures left and right. Mine overheated too, and I caught it just in time to get it to process. I'll be switching as well.
I felt like a fool not remembering your name (I did know it!!). It was Celebrity Brain Cloud. I forgot to give you my card too. Brain Cloud. Anyway, I got my wife watching you right now.
Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway are both amazingly awesome roads. I think people would rate Needles Highway higher if they rode the whole thing, start at the Intersection of 385 and 87 between Hill City and Custer and ride it all the way until it connects again with 385 just North of Hot Springs.
So Far my GoPro has only failed while snowmobiling. But it makes me nervous hearing about all these failures. With an upcoming ADV trip in CO, UT, and ID…I ordered an Insta360 One RS after watching your video. Thanks!

The thing is Jess that you may have lost the video but the memories and conversation with Jordan are in your memories that you both shared that's something nobody can take away or lose but this video turned out pretty good even with your lost footage so be careful and ride safe God love ya both

Ugh. I'm so sorry about the lost footage. Maybe that was meant to only be for you guys only, though. Regarding different cameras, it seems like others I follow that switched from GoPro went with the DJI Osmo Action camera.

I've also done the Rally a couple times and pre rally a couple others, definitely enjoyed pre rally a lot more on the 2 wheels but to ride during the rally is kind of exciting in a different way.

I had the same problem! When i was in Sturgis last year my GoPro and three backup batteries died! I bought new batteries and plugged it into USB power supply while filming. It still crashed on me many times. I bought an Insta instead. Although it too overheats as well.

Returned my GoPro after lost footage do to my Hero 9 Black randomly shutting off, over heating after a few min and shutting down, erasing footage after having critical errors and then just not turning on! Have not bought a new camera yet but have been looking at the DJI Osmo Action 3! I fly a DJI Mavic Air 2 for video and photo graphing real-estate and i absolutely love it! With hopes the action camera is as good as there drones are! Good luck on your travels, be safe, and keep the rubber side down y’all!! ✌️
👍👍 Iron is best rode in both directions, try old Hill City road it goes across the 1880 train tracks multiple times. 😀
I’ve not been out there yet. I liked what I seen through your lens. My brother was there during the rally, and his daughter was there at the same time. They didn’t know each other was there until they got home. About bison, there is a farm in Logan, Hocking Hills area.
Glad you two are enjoying the ride out there! Just got home from two days and 600+ miles in the Great North Woods (to Dixville Notch NH) and my riding buddy kept complaining that I was too far back. I ride the posted speeds and told her you ride at your pace and I’ll ride mine. I don’t need to screw up on one of those switchbacks and end up going over the edge of a cliff. First trip to sturgis in 2017 i came around the corner third bike in line. There was a bison walking on the white line on a switchback 3 ft away. He was not thrilled to see us. The feeling was mutual lol.

I also agree with the conversation you and Jordan had are for your ears and memories as well. I ain't to sure about camera's or action camera's but so far I do notice that people who still record with the 8,9 maybe 10 have less crashes. But then they might as well not mention it. Also the DJI Osmo 3 is a good one.

I agree with riding those rides during rally. Was there on the 29th and rode them on way farther west. I know you have risen Bear tooth as I have twice but want to recommend going to the sun at Glacier. And if you do ride west to east, it will make bear tooth seem tame. Best ride ever!!!!

I’ve not had those issues with my Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 (but it looks discontinued 😢)
I completely understand not riding during the rally. I've lived in the Daytona area since 2007 and I ride less during Bike Week than I do any other time of the year. I'll go to the speedway to look at the bikes but I avoid Main Street like the plague because there are tons of people that aren't good riders. I've seen people rear end other bikes . I've seen the stall of their bike at every single stop light with 20-30 bikes behind them causing other bikes to have to do emergency stops or take evasive action. I just stay at home and ride the rest of the year.
You are so lucky, here in Texas it is too hot to ride except at night or a few hours in the morning. It is supposed to be 108 today, and that is the reg temp not the feels like. My air cooled bike just does not like the heat.

Great video, riding the Black Hills does take a lot of concentration. It was great to see my brothers car go past you. You should come back to the hills in September when the traffic is a lot less. You should also think about hiking Black Elk Peak. Amazing view. I would like an action camera but I have not seen anything that would make me spend the money on a GoPro. Please keep us updated on your camera of choice.
Great and beautiful ride. Few camera / recording options. All depends on how long you record continuously. One option is your iPhone. Great 4K quality etc. you can get a cheap gps if needed. GoPros are good, just need to be turned off about Avery 10-20 mins. Which model do you have?
Most days when at the rally we ride Needles and Iron Mountain Rd first thing in the morning. If you’re there by 5:30am you’ll likely be one of the only people on the road. We’ve seen herds of Bison (100+) and sat amongst them for 45min in silence. 900+ pound Harley, 200+ pound man and I felt like an 8 yr old size wise. Bison are huge! Enjoy the rally! 🙏🇺🇸♥️
What cam did you have before? If I remember your bike had a surprise cam and you changed it. Also what motor do you have? I'm looking at cams. Love watching your adventures. Keep the shiny side up.
Di d you get to see Sylvan Lake which is a mile down from Needles going through the tunnel....Wife and i go to the Back Hills at least twice every year and I always have to go spend some time sitting at Mt Rushmore staring at that beautiful Monument..Sorry to hear about the lost footage but enjoy the rest of your stay in the Hills...
