- Should You Buy A Shearwater Petrel 3? The Divers Ready Review has landed. I had a Petrel 1 as my first ever technical diving computer. I loved it. Now here we are at the Shearwater Petrel 3. Does true love last forever?
If you feel like supporting our channel, this is my affiliate link to the Petrel 3 and Perdix 2. Purchases made through these links may earn me a small commission at no additional cost to you and I thank you for your support!

Perdix 2: amzn.to/3S9ViyE
In an age when Shearwater have poured all of their expertise into making the Perdix 2 the greatest dive computer of all time, is there still a market for a standalone Petrel? Shearwater will always make a Petrel dive computer as their CCR controller. But should Open Circuit (OC) divers choose a Petrel over a Perdix in 2022? I'm not so sure...
Thanks for watching.

You just earned another subscriber, excellent content, thank you 😎👍
Im a Rec Diver and LOVE the Petrel 3.... Get it and be too in LOVE ;-)
I actually just ordered my dive computer the other day. Not the Petrel 3, but it is the Perdix 2 with a transmitter. based on your review and love for it. Im super excited to get it and to grow with it.
You’ll love it Tazmin. I just got one as well. It’s great! Happy bubbles!
Thanks Ramy
I have dove with the Petrel series since 2013 in both wet and drysuits. I wear it on the inside of my left forearm. In this location it poses no problem when getting into my harness and is less likely to get banged up from inadvertent contact with things. Nice review.
Thank you for the pro tip in the end, I always been doing it the sub optimal way.
Glad to help! Dive safe.
All was good stuff 👍
I was set on getting a Perdix 2 AI for my new dive computer but now if the Petrel 3 come with AI I'm going to have to re evaluate my decision. Excellent video as always.
Hi ,Do you use an spg as well or relaying completely on the transmitter?
@@ahmedsamy8406 I also use an SPG.
There's an upgrade available for the Petral2 which entails replacement of the screen cover etc. It will come back to you looking very much like the Petral3.
I have this same computer and I also love mine.
Our house has Petral 3s and my wife uses the Perdix 2. She's a tiny thing and prefers the smaller profile. On the other hand, I find that lower profile is an issue with my rigid dry glove cuffs. The Petral stands higher than the cuffs, making button access easier. If I was a wetsuit diver, I'd buy the Perdix, just for the lower profile. I do like the new display in the Petral though. I've blown up a Petral 1 and a Petral 2, so hoping for better longevity with the 3. In both cases, the pressure sensor failed, which is a known issue. (SW replaced the P1 no charge. The replacement P2 was replaced for less than dealer cost. I still think they're the best computer on the market regardless. I'm about to get a Teric as a gift. 🙂
Appreciate the review of the Petrel 3. As always, a solid product from Shearwater.
Completely unrelated, but sometime in the winter months you should edit in some "snow" falling outside the window. When I initially saw the bright window I had a thought that with a little snowfall you might be able to convince folk that it is snowing in Miami.....or you moved locations suddenly.
Totally random, but it could be a fun prank to pull and give you an editing experiment to play around with.
The only white powder in Miami is the type people sniff up their nose.
Absolutely remember my first love… I married her! we are going strong after 27 years and 2 daughters. Still young… only 49. Diving as often as I can going the technical diving route with your advice. Thank you!
James, it was great talking with you in Bonaire. Sorry I couldn't lineup a dive with you. Thanks for the feedback you gave me on the Petrel 3 and OC divers. It is insightful and quite in line with this review. As usual, we appreciate your superb reviews.
great work!
it's a niche market product when u compare it to the perdix
i guess it'll useful for divers going to arctic or antarctica
And anywhere cold. All of my friends dive SWs and 99% use Petrals. The Perdix is very low profile and gets lost in a drysuit sleeve in my experience.
James, your Petrel 3 affiliate link opens up to a Teric on Amazon.
Lol, I've been there with the computer getting snagged on the harness. I prefer to just put that arm in first. And or twist the computer round your wrist to the inside (still need to do that as I have the same issue with my chunky wrist compass on the other arm 😀
great tip about putting your computer on a dring before the bcd.
being not as rubbery as i used to be, i always take off my computer before putting on my bcd. i leave it sitting beside me and fear that it'll fall or worse.
i'll now put it on a dring first and put it on afterward.
ps it would have been nice if you mentioned the price difference between the computers.
Thanks for sharing! Dive safe.
Hi,
Would you be able to do a review of the Ratio iX3m? I have seen little information except what I see on their website.
Hi any chance of you doing a review of the new Apeks DSX computer please.
Sir good evening , which version has an analyser sothat I can know different gas conc in any cylinder
you have to see if it goes beyond 500 dives, I've had 2 petrels, I and II reaches 500 it doesn't work anymore, send it to maintenance, they do an upgrade, it comes back, and it doesn't work anymore, unfortunately my TERIC went to the same path and worse, it didn't even last 100 dives, it already broke down, they are excellent until they continue to work, for those who dive once a month maybe it will be good
FYI, as a hat tip to its Canadian heritage, the slot for the screw cap for the battery on both the Petrel and the Perdix is the same size as a Canadian Twonie... :D
Or you use the little blue tool that they include. The cool kids put in on their key chain.
And the o-ring on the battery cap is a standard valve o-ring, so everyone has a spare handy.
I’m getting back into diving after being absent for some time. Do people generally still carry analog gauges as a backup to computers? Or do people carry backup computers for their main computers? What do YOU currently carry in regards to this, James. Thank you.
I don't know anyone that carries an analog depth gauge, but some use a digital bottom timer. I wear a second computer on any big dives requiring significant deco and definitely on mix dives. As mentioned above, I've had two Petral deaths, both both between dives. They're great computers, but they do fail on occasion.
James i want to do my advanced open water the deep dive is between 100 and 110 feet what gas mix should i use air or nitrox and wat %
Air
I'd be interested to see a comparison between the Petrel 3 and Predator screen. The screens on the Petrels 1 & 2 and the Perdix were a major step back from the Predator.
Is the Shearwater Predator still being made?? It was introduced in 2009. You're referring to the OLED screened option. My guess is battery life was not good enough, like the Teric, I don't want to change or charge every couple days on a dive holiday. Maybe an email to SW and they will explain their choice if screen
@@bretttersmitte2746 No the Predator isn't made anymore, but they're still widely used as rebreather controllers. The OLED srceen was discontinued because the supplier stopped making them.
I don't think an AMOLED screen is as necessary on a dive computer as it is on a phone. You're not viewing media or content on it, it's just displaying numbers. The biggest sell would be the better vibration, but I've not had any problems feeling my Perdix 2's alerts through two 3mm wetsuits. I think the Petrel and the NERD remain more CCR focused. If I was going to buy a Petrel it would be one with a connector.
Heads up James. Your Petrel 3 affiliate link leads you to a Teric rather than a Petrel 3.
How do we feel about the new Apple Watch with dive functions?
Tell apple to fix their battery 🔋 first and then we will give a look at the features...
He posted his opinion based on the announcement on Facebook.
@@user-ru1yg2ig5y 36 hour battery life not good enough?
@@tank52086 when the standby of a watch os measured in hours is terrible for me... For a watch I need days and not hours and I think is awful to have to take it out of my wrist every other day!!
@@user-ru1yg2ig5y
Wait I’m confused. Taking it off is an issue, are you comparing it to a mechanical dive watch versus the computer?
I heard the new Apple Watch will put Shearwater out of business 😅. I’m kidding, please don’t rip me a new one. I would never dive anything that isn’t a Shearwater, I promise!
😡 is all I can say about the Fruit.
.
Hey mate they aint that great i will NEVER buy another shearwater product again. 19 dives and my petrel a took a crap and died. $350 canadian dollars to have factory repair it . My 20 year old cochran is still going strong and has more advanced features!
