A man underwent otoplasty and is concerned about why his doctor did not bandage the area, have him wear a headband, or offer any protection tips for his ears for when he sleeps. He’s worried that he will not get the results that he wants because of this.
New York oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon Amiya Prasad, M.D. reviews his concerns in this video, and explains why different surgeons may have different surgical approaches and post-surgery aftercare based on their experience:
1:34 - Dr. Prasad details his background training in cosmetic oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as his experience performing otoplasty in his practice
2:26 - How every surgeon has their own style and approach to surgery and post-surgery practices, and how doing something differently is not an indication of being unprofessional
3:48 - Dr. Prasad discusses the purpose behind placing compression bandages and a headband around the ears after surgery
4:50 - Dr. Prasad speculates that perhaps this man’s surgeon did a dissection clean enough that he felt it didn’t need to bandage the ears anymore
5:17 - Dr. Prasad’s recommendation; and the importance of having a dialogue with one’s surgeon regarding issues like this which can be solved

I have Very prominent ears. But I'm okay with that look. But I've heard that our ears getting bigger when we are getting older. If I didn't do this procedure will I end up with huge ears in my 60s or will it be the same as now?

      Hi Dulmi Perera,
The ears stop growing so they don't get bigger, but with age, they may get longer, and thin due to age-related volume loss, and sag as cartilage is not as firm as in younger years. I hope this clarifies things for you.

How long after an otoplasty can you resume strength training?

      Hi Megan,
It depends on how your surgery was performed, where you are in the healing process, and your scheduled suture removal, so you need to ask your surgeon. My otoplasty patients can resume strength training and other exercise usually 2-4 weeks after their surgery. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@@AmiyaPrasadMD thank you so much! I’ve heard anywhere from 10 days-6 weeks and I wasn’t sure why the time frames were so drastic. I appreciate yours response ! 💞
