    I've found that for figuring out a new pattern, over and over, cereal box cardboard is my friend! 😉

    Liz has awesome arms! There's no holsters for those leather crafting guns, and I hope to gain my own pair. Go Liz Go!!!

    I like using cardboard for patterns as it more closely resembles leather thickness so my measurements are closer to the pattern.

    If you glue 1/2" wood slats along the inside top edge of the stitching pony jaws you can get it to sort of stand off the leather a bit. Easy to do,

    I certainly enjoy watching and listening to Ms Liz as she works. I also have seen some of her exquisite inlaid knife sheaths and am in awe of her work!

    I picked up a great tip from Adams LeatherWorks for figuring the width of a fold over sheath/holster: take a strip (1/4 x 1/2” wide) of leather the same thickness as you’re using for the sheath/holster and wrap it around the knife/gun at points where the measurements will change and mark those measurements figure in your seam allowance and transfer those measurements to your pattern. God, I hope that wasn’t confusing as heck.... if you watch his videos there’s a couple where he goes thru the process. Good luck🥴 and happy crafting.

    The vertical sheath for outdoorsman can benefit with a water weep hole at the bottom ... simply cutting a small section of the welt will work, or drill it ... but with your stitching going all the way around it may cause a problem unless stop stitching and start again on other side of hole [tooling design might camo it nicely]. so perhaps a small hole at the welt line just above the stitching and going out the sheath back only might be better? You see the problem right? Falling into the lake or stream has been known to happen ... If its cold out, believe me that getting the knife dry right away is NOT the immediate concern ... if survival is important anyway ... Ha!

    A small finish nail in the drill press sharpened up to a better tip will push through the leather when put in your drill press. Using the press for leverage.

    I recently bought some budget pricking irons from another company. After seeing this video I went to the store today and bought a set of the ones Liz used. They were a bit more expensive than my previously purchased set ... but still very affordable. However, the quality (finish) is FAR superior.
    I’m keeping an eye out for those new edge bevelers.

    If chrome tanned leather gets wet it will bring the chromic acid out and pit even stainless steel knives. For sure it will rust the heck out of plain high carbon steel.
    For the welt I get it glued on and cut the top even. I use my stitching chisel from the top down in a stitching groove. I put the same groove on the back and punch thru from both sides. Everything lines up perfectly, but then again I did build the B-2 bomber so precision comes easily to me..

    Don't worry Liz, the head knife scares the hell out of me too. It's like having an assassin in the shop. I have one but I rarely use it. And when I do use it I never lay it down I always put it right back in its sheath.

    @lohikarhu734 Před 2 lety

    Liz, et al; have you ever made a 'puukko' style sheath? One interesting thing about them, they don't have a 'belt loop', they have a leather loop that lets the sheath 'dangle' from the belt, so that it is free to move around, when, for instance, you get into your car, where a normal sheath often makes it difficult /uncomfortable to get the seatbelt fastened... I also, sometimes, slip the knife into my pocket.

    I've never seen the wet molding after the sheath has been completely finished. This is a great idea and I will use this method in the future. Thank you for the tip and vid. The channel is great and I gladly subscribed and liked!!!

    Who actually sharpened the edge beveler for you? I'm so sick of getting new ones that require the buyer to create his own sharp edges.

    Just a tip, good job by the way, if you get gum trag on your unfinished leather it dyes out very splotchy( some spots cant be dyed because it acts as a kind of resist). Dye your leather first... Or use pre dyed.

    I do hope you guys are using masks when sanding the leather by machine or hand. Think Black Lung from coal miners. As far as I know leather does not dissolve when in the lungs and some data mentioned that in some cases folks have gotten seriously incapacitated with it.
