  • I adore my PrismaColor Premier colored pencils. That being said, they are certainly not inexpensive art supplies. For that reason, I definitely made sure to get the PrismaColor matching colored pencil sharpener to go with my colored pencils. Why does a sharpener matter?
A colored pencil is traditionally made up of a colored inner cylinder surrounded by an outer wooden sheath - the part you hold in your hand. The job of that wooden sheath is to protect and hold the color while you draw your design. If you use a cheap sharpener, the twisting torque of the sharpening process can actually cause the inner color section to separate from the outer wood section. Now you have broken bits of color inside there, or the entire color 'tube' comes loose, or so on. In essence you can ruin the entire pencil. Now you're stuck going out and buying a fresh pencil in that color to fill in the gap in your set.
It is well worth it to have a proper quality sharpener, so you can do the regular sharpening activity you need to keep your pencils functional, while also preserving the pencils so they work as best they can.

I do find the sharpener helpful to have, to prolong the life of the pencils. These aren't inexpensive pencils :). Heck if you look at the expert people who draw, they hand-carve their pencils with knives ...
