  • Originally Aired on the Disney Channel April 1985 (#11 in The Series of 20 Disney Family Albums)
    One of Walt’s Nine Old Men, Frank Thomas joined The Walt Disney Company in 1934. Frank animated dozens of feature films and cartoon shorts; in addition to being an animator, Frank was an avid pianist and recruited by Ward Kimball to play the piano for the Firehouse Five Plus Two Dixieland Band. Frank animated some of the most memorable Disney scenes including Lady and the Tramp eating spaghetti, the song “I Wan’na Be Like You” from The Jungle Book, the dwarfs crying over Snow White, and the dancing penguins in Mary Poppins. Frank’s character work included the Wicked Stepmother (in Cinderella), the Queen of Hearts (in Alice in Wonderland), and Captain Hook (in Peter Pan).

    Frank Thomas seems like such a lovely person- he’s so humble, jolly, funny and seems to be the type of person to truly love the little things. Not to mention, his incredible talent! Such an overall stellar human being.

      Yes ! I wish Disney would go back to the original video masters in their vaults and re-master them to true HD resolution (or at least cleaned up SD resolution if the original video tapes are not HD resolution) to show on Disney+ . These are historical treasures about some of the key people associated with Walt Disney. In the meantime I'm grateful for these decent quality versions posted by Sam's Disney Diary.

    Really glad to see these episodes posted in reasonably good quality . Thank you. I sure wish Disney would pull the original video masters out of the vault and re-master them to true HD resolution (or at least cleaned up SD resolution if the original video tapes are not HD resolution) to show on Disney+ .

    "Frank Thomas loves animation because it pulls together everything he loves about life"
    That is such a beautiful and powerful way to end there. I got teary-eyed listening to that.

    6:14 I see why Fred Moore’s Mickey sketches were and are and can be so appealing, because he’s one of the earliest masters of gesture drawing for animation in general.

    I watched Frank and Ollie a year or so ago. Showed it to my girlfriend some days after and later to my mother-in-law and, each time I saw it, I got more and more aware of each nuance they all brought to the animations.
    This video here honestly made me come back N times to some of the animated scenes and try to dissect them, which made me cry 3 or 4 times.
    I really think the value of a piece of art is somewhat related to how much it makes you cry, whatever the reason for crying is (there's a myriad of emotions and motives for that); so, to my compass, this man's work is a HUGE work of art. =)

    Frank Thomas made a posthumous cameo in The Incredibles (2004) along with Ollie Johnston (1912-2008).

    Speaking of Bill Tytla, there was another Snow White sequence that he did the animation for, and that was the "Dwarfs' Washing Song" sequence.

    I remember this animator. And I believe he worked on the ice skating scene in Bambi. He was an animator on Pinocchio and 101 Dalmatians.

    • @InklingStudio
      @InklingStudio Před rokem

      Yes, and a whole lot more films besides Bambi, Pinocchio, and One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Frank worked on 20 Disney animated feature films stretching from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - through - The Fox and the Hound (1981) and he animated on numerous Disney short animated films. He also animated and directed on short animated films made for the military during his service in World War 2 with the 1st Army Air Force Motion Picture Unit headquartered at the Hal Roach Studios in Culver City, CA. (the unit was known colloquially as "Fort Roach" )

    I directed every episode of The Disney Family Album and conducted all the interviews. I'm writing a book about my 20+ year association with Disney, 'Me and The Mouse," which will include lots of stories you've never heard before about Walt Disney, and many of its legends. Some really good stories about Frank and Ollie. Watch this space to get on the mailing list to pre-order the book, which I hope to have in print in 2024.
