The first time I saw PF live was in 1975, at nite, outdoors, in a stadium with 80,000 people in quadrophonic sound. I have played with tons of musicians. I have been to literally hundreds and hundreds of concerts since the early 70s and David Gilmour is the only guitarist that made me shed a tear and he's done it every time I have seen him live. HIs hands are connected to his heart and soul and they all speak together fluently. He is the lesson that you don't have to play a thousand notes a second to be good. You have to make every note count for something.

    In my opinion, this is the greatest guitar solo in history. There may be others that are more technical, that play more notes, that may be more technically perfect, but this one just.......hits. It hits something primal inside of me. The last minute or two is almost transcendental. I don't know why, and I don't know how, I have no background in music, and have no musical ability whatsoever, but I love music and it is a huge part of my life. I have never heard another piece of music that can touch some part of me in this way. David Gilmour created art here.

    • @ericynot
      @ericynot Před rokem +17

      Nicely put, John. I'm like you in the no musical ability but love music place. I've listened to this songs in various versions hundreds of times over the last 44 years, and it has never failed to move me. Prior to "Numb" I never knew a guitar solo could bring tears.
      It's too bad Gilmour has reached an age where we can't expect much more new music from him, but, thankfully, he and fellow Floyders created such a large catalog we'll never run out of things to re-listen to and learn from. And, despite his lesser likeability quotient, I'm also very grateful to Roger Waters for his inspiration and contributions -- without both David and Roger, PF would never have achieved what they did.

      With all due respect,but seems to me that every long time Floyd admirer(I included, of course)wanna delete Roger Waters due to his tyrant behavior before The Wall!Or for sure,many people dislike his present ideology (me excluded)! But I say,if Lennon needed McCartney & vice versa,Roger needed Dave(& late Rick🙌🙏) ten times more & vice versa! I've always preferred Dave's esthetics & Roger's thought process! That combination made Pink Floyd greatest band ever(in my humble opinion).But those two have been in beef since late 70's & now they are even more distanced cause of war in Ukraine! I'm afraid that they'll pass without burring the hatchet! Sorry if I bored you, but that could possibly be real life Eclipse (btw,best tune that Roger was ever singing/Braindamadge🌚🙌🙏

    Comfortably Numb is one of the most extraordinary pieces of music ever composed. I always felt that towards the end, it became the funeral march of a lost and tormented soul. All of the anguish and regret of something glimpsed and lost is distilled and channeled into one extended searing cry. This never gets old. Ever. It speaks to something that we all know and cannot be expressed in any other way. Music - real music is a language all its own. Extraordinary musicians like David Gilmour can communicate their inner experiences as few can today. Gilmour’s guitar appears to be connected directly to his soul. Some musicians can manage that for a few moments. For Gilmour, it’s his natural state of being. It is unmistakable and cannot be faked.

      David knows when and how to NOT play a guitar. In other words, he has mastered the art of just letting a note sing, letting that pause between notes linger to make you anxious in that split second, yearning for the release of that next note that you know is coming. He can hit you with a flurry that just about knocks you out of your seat and then pull back on the reigns, leaving you stunned into awe. Truly a master of his instrument and I wish more guitarists would learn that you don't always have to be hitting the strings as fast as your fingers are capable. One thing worth acknowledging are most of the most emotionally provocative music is performed by musicians who couldn’t read or write a note of music to save their lives. Technical ability is actually not the most important gift to have to moves people’s hearts. Technique can be learned; heart and soul can’t. That’s a big part of the longevity of older music compared to the computer generated stars of today. They will likely have no longevity beyond their own generation.

    Your reaction is as beautiful as the performance! It shows that you feel it. :)

    THE best guitar solo ever. I know people will argue and I would agree with you but then we will both be wrong.
    Also, the ball opening up is just mind blowing every. single. time.

    I still get goose bumps. How David hits those glass breaking notes is legendary. Love you guys ❤

    What I love too is this solo is longer and 1000x better than the recorded track. The solo on the track is really good but I only listen to this live version because of this solo. It’s so much longer, more emotional, and the artistry is god tier. One of my favorite solos of all time.
