  • The Distinction Awards Ceremony, is an annual event organized by the Council to recognize candidates who excel in the WASSCE.
    In the 2020 examination, a former student of Mfantsipim School, Cecil Tetteh Kumah emerged as the Overall Best Candidate and alsoBest Candidate in the General Science Programme. Cecil is currently studying Mechanical Engineering &Computer Science at Columbia University.
    Godfred Aseda Obeng, a former student of Hope College and Afua Manukure Ansah, a former student of Achimota School placed second and third respectively. Godfred is currently at the University of Legon, studying Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery while Afua is at Cornell University studying Electrical and Computer Engineering.
    With regards tothe Programme Awards, only three candidates met the criteria for the awards. Cybil DzifaTay, a former student of Wesley Girls’Senior High School was awarded the best candidate in the General Programme (Arts Option) and Ms. Blessed Assefuah, a former student from Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High School was the Best Candidate for the Business Programme.
    For the 2021 examination, Kwame Asante Brako, a former student of the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School took the Overall Best Candidate and alsoBest Candidate in the General Science Programme. Kwaku Ohene-Amoani, Ransford Nana Agyei Korang, both from St. James Seminary Senior High School placed second and third respectively. Ohene-Amoani is studying Medicine at KNUST, while Ransford is studying Pharmacy at KNUST.
    Four Programme awards were presented to candidates who met the criteria for the 2021 examination. The General Science Programme went to the Overall Best winner. Best Candidate for the Business Programme was received by Sito Onya Shiembor, while the Best Candidate in General Arts Programme was presented to Francis Abokua, both former students of St. James Seminary SHS. Best candidate for the Visual Arts Programme went to Tettey Justin Nartey, a former student of Achimota School.
    The award winners were given the following prizes:
    1st Prize Winner - Cedi equivalent of USD 1,200 from WAEC Endowment Fund, Cedi equivalent of USD 400 from WAEC Ghana, for being the Best in the Science Programme, GHS30,000.00 and a laptop from Zenith Bank.
    2nd Prize Winner - Cedi equivalent of USD 900 from WAEC Endowment Fund, GHS15,000.00 and a laptop from Ouzman Security Print and Trent International Limited.
    3rd Prize Winner - Cedi equivalent of USD 750 from WAEC Endowment Fund, Cedi equivalent of USD 400 from WAEC Ghana, for being the Best in the Science Programme, GHS10,000.00 and a laptop from Japan Motors Trading Co. Limited
    All programme award winners received Cedi equivalent of USD 400 from WAEC Ghana, GHS5,000.00 and a laptop from the following sponsors:

    About the WAEC Distinction Awards:
    The WAEC Distinction Awards is an initiative of the West African Examinations Council Endowment Fund (WEF).
    • The WEF provides funds for awards to candidates with outstanding performance in the council’s examinations at the senior high school level.
    • It is held annually to reward the top performers in the previous year’s WASSCE for School candidates.

    WAEC is Africa’s foremost examining body established by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in the English-speaking West African countries, to conduct the examinations and to award certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally.
