  • Learn How to Blur the Background in Adobe Photoshop 2023 | Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial
    Welcome to this comprehensive tutorial where I will guide you through the process of blurring the background in your photos using Adobe Photoshop 2023. This technique is not limited to the latest version; it also works seamlessly with any Photoshop version that has the Select Subject feature. To determine if your version has this, just navigate to the Select menu and look for the Subject option.
    Achieving a beautifully blurred background in your photos is easier than you might think. By following these simple steps, you can add a professional touch to your images to focus attention on the main subject:
    STEP 1: Separate the main subject
    Isolating the main subject from the rest of the image on a new layer. This can be accomplished using the Select Subject feature to generate a Layer Mask. This ensures that only the subject remains visible while the background becomes transparent.
    STEP 2: Create a new background layer
    Next, create a separate layer for the new background. For this we use the Content-Aware Fill feature to remove the main subject automatically.
    STEP 3: Apply the Gaussian Blur filter
    Having removed the subject, we can now blur the background layer. For this, we use the Gaussian Blur filter, which allows you to control the intensity of the blur.
    While this process may seem straightforward, I will also share some valuable tips and tricks to optimize your results. By implementing these techniques, you can further enhance the visual impact of your blurred backgrounds. You can also read the details in my article: lenscraft.co.u...
    So, whether you are a beginner or an experienced Adobe Photoshop user, this step-by-step tutorial will give you the skills to easily blur photo backgrounds.

    I couldn't get this method to work after adding so many layers to do my retouching. I'm guessing this step has to be done first, then retouch after.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Do it first. If you want to do it later create a Stamp Layer that created all the other layers.

    I have followed this word for word , watched and copied as I went but for some reason my the Gaussian blur is covering where my subject is not the other part.

    • @rebeccababula8886
      @rebeccababula8886 Před 10 dny +1

      Are you sure you didn't apply the blur to the layer with the mask? You want it on the background layer I think.
      Or try inverting your mask (ctrl i) not sure if that'll help but it's worth a try

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  Před 8 dny +1

      I think your masking feature may have become inverted. Try this. Open an image in Photoshop. Find the quick mask icon in the Tools Palette on the left of the screen. It's usually second from the bottom and shows a white rectangle with a dotted circle inside it. Double click the icon which opens a small dialog. This should be set to Masked Areas but may have been changed to Selected Areas. Change it to Selected Areas and then click OK. Restart Photoshop and then follow the instructions in the video again to see if it then works. This is just a guess but I've seen people have similar problems to yours in the past because this "hidden" setting was changed.

    Pretty cool but I wouldn't say "easy". So many steps to remember. I would prefer a simpler way to get some background blur. Usually I'm looking to add just a little more to say mimic a faster lens.

    nice. but i think its geared towards advance people. need some explanation as to why you have to remove the man from duplicate layer and why the duplicate layer is in the middle stack. Glyn Dewis has more of an elementary explanation that makes slow learner or noob like people really gets it. but its good. i can follow it Verbatim but really not knowing the rationale behind blurring the background. cheers.
