    Been to the Carolina mines a few different times over the years.
    I'd recommend this to anyone with a few hours to spare, so just relax and have fun!

    There is a GREAT book called 'Gems For The Taking' that I would hope every NC mine carries. Fantastic info and experience in several of the mines.

    I have watched other do this before and I bet they miss so much! Some of these are not obvious unless you really know what to look of or can spot through the tough dirt. Really beautiful stuff!!

    I'm going solo at the end of September or beginning of November for a dig somewhere. Thinking Arkansas or somewhere awesome. I'm the only one who enjoys this kind of stuff so it's hard to get anyone to come...anyone reading this intrested ???😁 I promise I'm not weird 🤣

    I live in western NC and have purchased jewelry from Mason Mtn Mine but I've not done any gem mining here. I want to... just haven't done so. I knew about the garnets, rubies, and sapphires, but I had no idea there was kyanite in their dirt, too.

      Yes they have a separate kyanite deposit and sometimes pieces make it into the pile. Super amazing!

    At Mason’s pile, dig around the bottom, cause the heavies fall down. I found a 600 carat sapphire at Cowee!

    I love watching these videos and others for rock hounding and prospecting and really want to do this myself, I am just curious on what to do with it once you find it. Gold is one thing, but raw minerals like those rubies or garnets or anything else you would find I just wouldn’t know what to do with it.

      This location offers to make jewelry with the high quality finds.
      Otherwise they can be used for decoration or meditation.

      Not in the native dirt from what I was told. They do offer salted buckets and sometimes it mixes in a little but they can identify on site and let you know.

      Holy cow, I wasn’t quite aware of that.
      It’s a great spot to find larger pieces. They need to be fracture-free though to be cutting grade.

    Those are some cool finds, but people should know that most of those rocks and minerals didn't come from NC. They call it "native dirt" or "soil" because the only thing that is native to the area, in those piles, is the dirt/soil... Some of the quartz and garnets might be from the area, but all the corundum (ruby and sapphire) and kyanite is likely imported into the country and salted into the dirt piles.

      There are places where you can find NC ruby, sapphire, garnets, kyanite, tourmaline, and more... but this isn't the place. Major tourist trap.

    Ther worth nothing tho I found one shaped like a perfect purple crystal thought I found money was told it was worth 600 bucks I kept it and maid a chain pendant for my daughter but I won't dig anymore not worth the time

      It’s not so much about the money, more about the experience. The ryolite garnet can be quite valuable.

    The thumbnail isn't very realistic... Yes without a doubt people find a lovely gem stone there... The amount of time and people picking through the gravel is way more than the genuine diamonds that we have heard who are finding something valuable...

    I have never seen such a poor photo shopped picture to get people to watch a video. Rubies & Sapphires rarely come in large sizes as you display. If they did they would start becoming worthless, but pretty gems.
