  • This version of the KiwiRail controlled collision shows the collision in slow motion and illustrates graphically the time it takes for a train to stop after it has hit a car on a level crossing.

This video is just as important today as it was back in 2011. Even though it's a staged collision, I still get an uneasy feeling while watching it. DXB 5143 and DC 4260 were an interesting choice of locomotives, if you ask me.

Train and motor vehicle crashes are dramatic and in most instances completely avoidable. Twenty six seconds for the train to stop after the collision shows that trains travel at a greater speed than they may appear to someone who's thinking of running the crossing alarms.

That is a lot faster than I thought it would take for that train to stop! I’m sure it would be much longer say if it were a 150 cars long as opposed to a 25 car long train.

I think they really should have started the timer when the workers on the train first see the car. This would show people that the train couldn't stop once it sees you.

There aren't too many road vehicles that can stand up to a train. I fail to understand why some people continue to think they can beat the train at a crossing. Even at slower speeds, trains are unable to stop in time to avoid striking a vehicle stuck on the tracks. Although I didn't notice the train's speed in this video, 26 seconds is a long time for it to come to a stop.

Matt Patt Yeah ... WAY under 60 ... and the train was EMPTY (no tonnage to speak of). (Glad to see that you know the names of the speeds ... shows hope for an intelligent conversation).
People need to realize what happens in the cabin of the car. It isn't likely that there would have been survivors at even this speed.
Within inches, the car will accelerate to whatever speed the train was going. Then the car interior will hit the people, making them catch up to its speed. The impact is similar to jumping from a 100 foot bridge and landing on your side with a seat belt sliding across your neck.
Then their organs will tear free and the internal bleeding begins ... but that's okay because there is a very good chance that their necks are broken and they won't ever feel anything below their jaws again.
The lucky ones die right then.
