      The most common heart failure is cholesterol building up in the vains of the right side of the heart causing blockages .but to get to the right side of the heart cholesterol would have to go back
      Through the lungs . Even if cholesterol can go straight through some tissues. Cholesterol should build up in the lungs before the right side of the heart

      @extrastuff9463 Před rokem +13

      Making it a consistent habit is probably one of the hardest things to do if that's never been your normal default mode.
      The environment around the home/place of employment and climate make a huge difference too though, lived in a few places and not being surrounded by only buildings and noisy cars sure helps stimulate wanting to leave the house.
      Getting a treadmill at home also helped a lot, it's not fun to use but it was a big help in regaining some mobility before the total hip replacement and later to stick to exercise every day afterwards even during rainy/cold/stormy weather. Doesn't really matter what it is, but if there's space for it some easy to use piece of exercise equipment at home can be great to integrate into regular habits.
      Another long term option that can make a big difference is if you can safely replace a car/public transport commute with something else like going by bicycle or even walking if it's a short distance. But that has some prerequisites like safe infrastructure and a "reasonable" distance. I'd probably find it acceptable up to 15 km myself and wouldn't want to do that if I had to share the road with cars going over 30 km/h. With my current 8 km commute it's kinda funny that during typical early morning traffic my trip to the office is only 4 minutes longer than if I'd have gone by car which I don't have simply due to the very slow moving traffic on the main road while the bike paths are not impeded.

    • @gabrielpetersen8528
      @gabrielpetersen8528 Před rokem +9

      I would say making it consistent is the easiest part. I started by going to the gym every day for 30 days. Even on my rest days, even on the days I didn’t want to work out. I just walked in. Looked around and walked out. After that month it started feeling weird when I wasn’t going to the gym. If you don’t have gym, start with cardio. Put on your running gear every day, even if it’s just to walk to the mailbox or got to the end of the road and back. It’s all about getting into a habit. Once you have the gear one, once you’re at the gym, once the habit is built. You will show up and think “well I might as well work out” or “well I might as well run a couple blocks”.

    i'm allergic to BMI. I'm a fitness trainer who is short and extremely busty, and in Sweden BMI is seen as the absolute measure of someone's health. I, for example, am not allowed by breast reduction surgery because my BMI is above 25, regardless of the fact that the 2kg which shoot me above 25 is exactly how much by breasts weigh. the ones that make my body not average and that i want gone.
    I understand that BMI is a good *tool* but to have an entire country's medical system hold onto it and treat it as absolute has just made me want to ditch the whole thing altogether.

    I've been tracking my calories and body weight daily for about 8 months or so now, and last month I finally hit the point where my waist circumference was less than my hips. Dropped all the way from 265 lbs down to 220 lbs. I feel lighter, more energetic, and more in control of my diet, and people comment that I don't look fat, but my BMI is still sitting around 34, making me still obese, and I still have visible fat and bulges around my midsection. My target weight goal is 190 lbs, but that still puts me at a BMI of around 30. So, I would still be considered borderline obese, but last time I was at that weight I had a 6-pack. I like this idea of the waist-to-hip ratio and will incorporate it into my plan, since BMI doesn't work for me and accurate body fat measurement techniques still seem to be out of my grasp.

    • @AndreiH1605
      @AndreiH1605 Před rokem +22

      My dude, if you have a 6-pack and a BMI of 30 at 190, that makes you a 5'6" muscle mass monster. You're good. If you have a somewhat visible 6-pack (not a shredded 6-pack, just a somewhat visible one), you're without a doubt within healthy weight limits.

    • @AndreiH1605
      @AndreiH1605 Před rokem +1

      @@beanoptodon the thing is, overall health assessments required for organ donation are absolutely not based on BMI, much less on BMI alone. It's just a factor out of many - personal medical history, family medical history, tests for infectious diseases and so forth. The exact numbers depend on the country, but in general, BMI is not a determining factor unless you are in the extreme range, that is, under 18 or over 35. This is valid both for the donor and for the recipient, particularly in cases such as kidney transplants from a live donor. As for post-mortem transplants, BMI is much less of a concern. They will look at your organs directly and assess whether they are viable for transplant. Visceral fat is immediately evident once you open someone up lol.

    If you're looking to measure your own body fat, the US navy method is the easiest and the most effective among the ones you can do yourself. Skinfold caliper is very difficult to do especially if you have visceral belly fat. The US navy method just requires two tape measurements for men (chest and waist around the navel) and three for women, and gives you an almost DEXA-level accurate reading. It doesn't get the love it deserves

    It always makes me feel super weird because I'm a competitive aerialist acrobat and lifter, and so I'm one of the ones classified as obese by BMI. It drives me absolutely insane because our culture is so hyper focused on whether number is big or not, and so much of our value as women is so emphasized as number being small. As a biochemist, I know that I'm healthy, but the societal pressures to be petite are insane and drive a lot of enormous problems and makes me feel anxious about my weight. These problems can be exacerbated by a lot of the clinical community because health problems many women face are often dismissed by providers just telling us to lose weight, even if the problems we're having aren't tied to it. Tracking BMI is better than nothing, but it's only useful relative to YOURSELF and where YOU are healthy at, and it drives me absolutely insane that some bare bones statistic has such a stranglehold on what we determine what healthy can look like. You have great points about the effects of visceral fat and why we should be careful about it, but man BMI is not even the bare minimum as far as many people are concerned when it comes to getting a picture of overall health.

    I don't really keep track of many measurements all that seriously, but I have noticed that since being able to be more active again a couple of my old non-elastic shorts started fitting comfortable again. They would feel slightly restrictive in the end when mobility was restricted due to hip issues and might require a belt sometime soon.
    I somewhat try to eat a healthy and varied diet, can be a bit hard to stay motivated for that at times. And I get enough encouragement to stay active enough because if I don't I'll get a reminder of more discomfort/painful episodes from my chronic lower back issues, don't think I'd put up with 3 visits to the gym each week otherwise. Initially before the total hip replacement I noticed good improvement mostly in upper body stuff and the back being less sensitive to things that would otherwise hurt. Post surgery I suspect it helped speed up the recovery, the left leg went from looking skinny to looking similar somewhere between 6-9 months post-surgery and the muscles are now finally also almost equally strong in all but one direction.
    This habit of the last 2 years and when the weather allows it mostly moving around by walking or bicycle doesn't really have me worried too much. It's somehow also easier to stick to eating better too when physically and mentally feeling better again. Being limited in your options and pretty much stuck at home rarely inspired the best choices in me.

    • @extrastuff9463
      @extrastuff9463 Před rokem

      I had a DEXA scan done about a year ago to establish a baseline set of measurements after a particular diagnosis. The standard report from the hospital to my GP here at home only mentioned a T and Z score for both spine (L1-L4) and the right femur. Doesn't mention anything about body fat, but maybe as mentioned in the video it's not designed for that so one might have to combine it with some other things like height and mass.
      I wouldn't be surprised if it won't be included on the report by default but it sure wouldn't hurt to ask the technician or someone else involved in the process nicely if you're interested in the results.
      I've also had a short MRI done of just the lower spine and the DEXA scan much earlier both on instruction of my rheumatologist. Your cost remark made me curious about what each procedure costs but the digital overview of my insurer is very unhelpful. I looked through what my insurer was billed for those and they're both about 650 euro. But they are both grouped with some other activities and the one with a DEXA scan also included the twice a year fairly long session that includes various measurements, going over the various issues I did or didn't have, etc. While the one with MRI had only a short consult with the rheumatologist and some basic blood tests. Hard to get a good idea of what each individual thing cost this way when it's bundled for all activities related to that hospital visit other than the MRI was more expensive.

      The place that does my bone density scan only does bone density tests. I was diagnosed with osteopenia two year ago. I was given no other information. I was told the machine wasn't set up for other types of tests. I have another test in less than a week to see if doing weight bearing exercise and taking supplements has helped.

    Now if someone who knew how the brain works can figure out how to stimulate the part that controls focus and motivation would be great. We all know we should be healthy and what not but when you’re stuck in depression, nothing motivates you. We know the benefits and appreciate them, but if the part of the brain that controls focus and motivation is inoperative, it has a cascade effect on other things. Apparently exercise is supposed to help with mental health but people like me, physical activity is painful.

      Then try to use discipline, or try to think of why you should do it and why it’s beneficial to you and do your best to use it as your motivation. Discipline is the most important though, it’s not easy but when you actually get into the gym or whatever you are trying to do then it will get easier. Look at it like it’s part of your routine.
      Also do you know if there’s a reason for why you lack motivation or for your depression? Like could it be some medical reason for it that could be why?

      Estrogen tends to give women curvier hips in comparison to waist, and keeps visceral fat from the abdominal region.
      This Estrogen effect “protects” women until some point in menopause when it falls to a low enough level (or earlier due to medical problems or injury).
      When Estrogen falls low enough, fat starts shifting from accumulating at the hips to accumulating at the waist/abdominal region, shooting visceral abdominal fat stores higher than before, and resulting in a rise of waist to hip ratio.
      This is likely why men have heart and circulatory issues earlier in life than women do.

In particular, is there a impedance scale that I can purchase for home use that gives me a BF% that is more useful than BMI (for long-term tracking and goal setting)? • @maythesciencebewithyou
      @maythesciencebewithyou Před rokem +2

      If I'm honest, I don't trust impedance scales to give a correct absolute value. However, they can be good enough to at least track changes. Some devices may give better approximate values, and others may even make up total bs, if they are some cheap chinese knockoff. I think it's enough to track yourself with a scale and a mirror. You don't really need a fancy device to tell if you are overweight. You should be able to tell if you got too much visceral fat by checking your belly size.

  • @681278
    @681278 Před rokem +1

    I use a withings+ scale (many other options just what I use because integrates well with apple health & it’s own app decent) every week same day that uses bioelectrical impedance.
    I still see interesting fluctuations of a few pounds in the breakdown of fat/muscle/etc but over time it provides a much closer approximation of how I’m doing, particularly if say I’m losing weight but gaining fat (if say I’m in a slight calorie deficit but well it was busy & I didn’t work out in preceding week)-this helps in particular with motivation. Motivation both in not letting a particular data point get me down but also in knowing what I’m doing well with, especially as getting closer to target weight.
    Lots of interesting data once fully configured & grows in utility the longer I use (after years of using regular scale).
