What a Class car this was in its day. When I was in elementary school, the parents of a friend of mine bought a new 1955. It was like he was coming to school in a limousine! I was 10 ! Quite an impact !

This is a beautiful, and rare, 1954 Lincoln Capri Coupe in black! It has many ornaments in chrome; Like that striking elongated cylindrical gold bullet on the hood, shields, or those chrome train-like lines above the headlights; without forgetting the huge and decorative fenders (especially the one at the back with the Lincoln logo). A beautiful interior, in metallic blue, with a beautiful grille-style instrument panel, along with the double-rimmed steering wheel in chrome, gold and cream (special mention, for the rear seat windshields). A fairly smooth and quiet final ride. Congratulations to Mr. Staehle; since he is so well restored that it is as if he had left the agency today! Best regards, Lou!

One of the "Road Race" Lincolns. Back in the early '50s, Lincoln dominated the Mexican Carerra Americana cross-country Mexican race. But, curiously, during this period, Ford had pretty much ceded the luxury market to Cadillac. They saw the Lincoln's direct competition as the Olds 98. It wasn't until the 1956 models that they again took aim at Cadillac. Gorgeous car!

A-m-a-z-i-n-g! Oh, my. What a treat you have for us today, Lou! A beautiful, black Lincoln - a generation that we don't see at all anymore. This is just like a new car inside and out. I love how cars of that vintage had jewel-like accents and the designers spent time adding details to even the most mundane areas (like the ends of the chrome strips on top of the fenders. Check out that dashboard and the font - looks almost art deco in design. Love how the dash flows into the doors. And remember when interiors actually had colors other than mundane grey, black, or the awful modern touch of dog pile brown with dark grey? This car is stunning! Thanks for sharing, Lou!

Fun fact: The Hydra-Matic transmission in this car is actually a General Motors product, originally used in Oldsmobile vehicles and later adapted by other GM car lines, as well as by others including: Hudson, Kaiser, Nash, Rambler, Willys, and from 1949-1954 used by Lincoln. In 1952 Rolls Royce acquired the license to produce the Hydra-Matic for rolls Royce and Bentley automobiles until 1967.

Just caught the video of this stunning '54 Capri, terrifically restored! Though I've never focused in on these '52-'55 Lincolns, being a Mopar (Chrysler 300 Letter Car) guy, I've been getting an education on them, reading the great book "Glamour Road" that's all about Mid-Century Modernism - the homes, the accessories, The Cars! And Lincoln's auto industry trendsetting advertising was incredible - an entire chapter devoted to incorporating these beautiful Lincolns with Mid-Century Modern homes and social settings. My cousin's had four '56 Lincoln Premieres over the years in a variety of the wonderful pastel colors offered, so I've been more tuned in to that year's gorgeous offerings, when the Premiere was made the higher model, above the Capri, that became the lower of the two model offerings. Not sure how I missed Dan's '54 coupe at Iola this past July, but great seeing it featured in this video! Congratulations on a beautiful car!

A car from an era when American cars had class. Thanks for posting!
What’s interesting is that is that Ford chose to name the car after the Italian island, Capri. The island which had been a favorite of writers, musicians, and artists in the 19th Century, had become a popular tourist destination in the 1950’s. The Capri name would be extended to Mercury and Ford. This was and still is a marketing technique for associating a product with a place that evokes a level of prestige, wealth, or adventure. The Chevy Tahoe, Kia Telluride and Toyota Tacoma are current examples.

That is a spectacular ride!! They have always been rare. My dad had several 52-54 Ford and Mercury's but never a Lincoln. I think the 54 still used the GM Hydromatic transmission. I'm sure others on this thread have mentioned it but the 54 Lincoln won the Carrera Panamericana race in 54. They were powerful cars for their day.

To begin, I would say the matching manufacturing and date you purchased it would say you and this Lincoln are meant to be. I'm a major Ford fan, and of course, that includes Lincolns and Mercurys. I wanted to watch your video because the pictures of it really caught my eye. You don't see many of these in black and, of course, the beautiful condition it's in. Having restored a few Fords in my past, I know how you feel about this work of art. Also, I don't know too much about these early 50s Lincolns. My first experience with Lincoln is with the 1956 Premiers. As a kid in the 60s, we had a neighbor who had one. It was a light pink color with a black and white interior. I remember how big it was, how thick the front seat backs were, and the style of the dash. I also really liked the shape of the taillights and the large hoods over the headlights. I used to love riding in it. That Lincoln started something in me, and I grew up owning several Lincolns that, like all the rest of the commenters, say, "I wish I still had them all." Thank you for your excellent review of this beautiful Lincoln. I love the taillights of most of the 50s cars. I often wonder how the designers come up with such creative designs. The taillights on this Capri are bold and stylish. The Ford Motor Company was always known for their big distinctive taillights, and I love that.

Man, what a fantastic car. To know how rare these are, i b have never seen one of these cars 8n pers9n that I know of. In 1956, I turned 4 years old. So maybe the fifties i may have seen one but didn't know what I was looking at. By the early sixties, when I was more aware of the different makes and models of cars. Old Lincolns from the early to mid fifties were not seen on the roads my family traveled. Locally, those roads were in the Michiana area. We did make trips often to the Cleveland, Ohio area and trip to Chicago via the Toll Roads. The only expensive luxury car i ever saw in person from 1956 was a Cadillac, and it was the only one. So those cars are rare. I loved seeing this video. One of the interesting things I saw on this video and another one I recently watched was the glass bottle for the windshield washer, Reservoir. Even bac in 56, Ford was using the vinyl/rubber pouches for the washer fluid. Beautiful car.

Here we go! I always learn something from your vids...Rear window deflector! Fantastic. I've always thought that the 54 Mercury looked similar to the '54 Lincoln. BUT, now that I've seen your comprehensive video...my thoughts are now that they were miles away from each other. So much class here. My only little complaint would be the simplistic dashboard...maybe that was what they were shooting for..but to me, it should have been a bit more ornate..Yet beautiful, beautiful car.

Lou as always great camera work. You featured all the bling perfectly. I'm glad that right before.the hood was closed you asked about that big thing on the drivers side. I was beginning to worry about you. I wish you would have asked what the four year restoration consisted of. Also a key part of any Car Story is where and how they found the car. Were they looking for this particular car and model or did they just come across. These are things that would make for a more interesting story.
BTW what a beautiful car and being a 54 they hadn't gone crazy with the fins. Nice clean lines. I agree with you Lou it looks much better without the continental kit. Keep finding these cool, unique, and rare cars.

Beautiful car! Love the 1952-56 Lincolns! Designed by John Tjaarda at Lincoln-Mercury Division of FoMoCo. I like the 1955 model best of the 1952-55 models, mostly because the headlights look much better with the painted headlamp rings (doors). The 1956-57 models were an all new design not like these. I recently saw a classic 1950s movie with a 1954 Lincoln Capri 2-door hardtop like this one. The 1954 Lincoln was the Mercury's big brother, both with similar designs, far better than the Fords of 1952-54.

  • @automatedelectronics6062

Wow! A '54 Lincoln with Hydramatic. Tell him to put the transmission in "R" to lock the transmission when he shuts the engine off. The bars across the back of the front seats are for hanging blankets on for the rear seat passengers.
It's too bad that Lincoln had backed off on their styling and looked like a Mercury. Fortunately they soon remedied that and became a stans-alone for years afterward.
