  • Starts with photos off slides from the 1960s of one of the very first Hillman Imps that was registered in August 1963. This is the parental car citnut3 learned to drive on. Of particular note is the original polished aluminium cam cover and the radiator fan enclosure with very few fixed blades. This car was in Balmoral Grey. The show progresses through a selection of Imps and other variants based on the Imp giving a broad overview of the range. All photos by CITNUT except the third taken by a friend of CITNUT3.

    The red Singer Chamois Coupe with quad headlamps (GJK 147H) used to belong in my family, we restored it to that condition - very rare, and possibly the best left in the UK? Only 341 built like it. Miss it... glad to see it's still loved.

    I worked in a large piano and organ shop in Belfast. They had 3 Huskies. I learned to drive in one. The high rear floor hid most of the rear wheel arches so they could transport most models of electronic organ. They were fun to drive.

      I never owned a Husky because I never found one I really wanted. I lived in the NW in the 60s and 70s and - if my memory is correct - Granada TV had a big fleet of blue Huskies. One Rootes garage told me that they were guaranteed 3 years for the company rather than the normal 12 months. Granada had metal covers made to go over the rear side window to convert the Husky to a van. When they reached the end of their life with Granada, you could spot them as they had 4 [?] slots where the side covers would been fixed.

    takes me back! i had 3 of them at one time, the last one being about 10 years ago....i spent a year restoring it and spent loads [mostly from a imp guru in taunton england] for my missus as a run about....she did not like it! could not get on with the gear change ended up with a mini auto...but i loved it...went round bends like on rails and was extremely nippy [rebuilt the engine] and no, it never over heated.
    ended up flogging it on ebay....for loads less than i spent..

    The bright green BS Nymph at 4.00 is mine. Why do it? Well why not? The Kit would have been made in the late 70s and was a great way of keeping a rotten Imp alive. Its great fun on a nice day and i love it. Good to see it in a youtube video.

    The gear change should have been very good and only require minimal movement of the lever if the two plastic rings supporting the rod to the rear are in good condition and the flexy link that connects the rod to the gearbox is also not worn. The flex link could be damaged by leaving the car parked in reverse gear too often and creating a twist in it. Well-kept Imps did not overheat.

    Most cars in the 60s and 70s had problems. A badly maintained or repaired Imp was unreliable but a good Imp was a delightful car with decent steering, ride and brakes. It did not even rust as fast as other small cars. I had a test drive in a new Mini in 1981and went in my 1969 Stiletto: it was still no contest for the Mini on too many parameters. I bought the newly released Mini Metro in 1981 - that was a really bad car!

    I had one in London in the 70's. A fellow stopped as I had the back open for maintenance and said "hey Mate...my advice...get rid of it !" He was right. Probably the most unreliable piece of crap I ever owned
