The Most Beautiful Libraries in the World
While We All Know That You Shouldn’t Judge a Book by Its Cover, This is One Case in Which Evaluating Something on Its Appearance is Not Only Accepted, but Encouraged, These Libraries Are Known for Noteworthy Exteriors-think Soaring Architecture With Inspiring Interiors, and That's Nothing Compared to the Millions of Books Housed Within Their Walls. So Whether You're a Bookworm or an Architecture Lover, Start Adding These Beautiful Libraries to Your Must-visit List.
The Library of El Escorial, San Lorenzo De El Escorial, Spain
Not Only is This Spanish Library a Work of Art, It’s Also Part of a Unesco World Heritage Site. Originally Commissioned by King Philip II, the Library’s Most Dazzling Feature is a Series of Seven Frescoes That Depict the Liberal Arts (Music, Rhetoric, Astronomy, and So on). The Town of San Lorenzo De El Escorial, Which is About 45 Minutes Outside of Madrid, Has Long Been a Favorite of Spanish Royals, and There’s Plenty More to See Here Beyond the Library, Including a Monastery, Gardens, and the Pantheons of Former Princes and Kings.
    Austrian National Library, Vienna, Austria
The Austrian National Library is the Largest Library in Austria, With More Than 12 Million Items in Its Various Collections. The Library is Located in the Neue Burg Wing of the Hofburg in Center of Vienna, One of the Austrian National Library's Most Jaw-dropping Features is the Huge Fresco on the Ceiling, Which Was Created by Painter Daniel Gran. The Dome is Also Decorated With Statues by Sculptor Paul Strudel That Pay Tribute to the Habsburg Rulers, Among the Exhibits Are Two Exquisite Venetian Baroque Globes: One for the Earth and One for the Sky, Each With a Diameter of More Than One Meter.
    George Peabody Library, Baltimore, Maryland
The George Peabody Library (Part of Johns Hopkins University) Contains Over 300,000 Volumes Stacked in Five Decorative Tiers. The Books Are Impressive, Sure, but the Cathedral Like-atrium, Marble Floors, and Wrought-iron Details Are the Main Draw Here. Is It Any Wonder the Library Has Become One of the Most Popular Wedding Venues in Baltimore?
Strahov Monastery Library, Prague, Czech Republic
The Strahov Monastery in Prague Was Originally Founded in 1143. Despite Wars, Fires, and Other Disasters, the Order Endured and Built Its Library in 1679. The Library's Best-known Features Are Its Remarkable Ceiling, Which is Covered in Biblical Frescoes, and the "Compilation Wheel" That Can Turn and Rotate Shelves in Order to Make Books Easier to Find Without Knocking Any of Them Over.
Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina), Egypt
Alexandria Was Once Home to the Most Famous Library in the World. Now, Egypt Pays Homage to Its Biblio-heritage With This Sleek Granite Building. The Circular Structure, Designed by Norwegian Firm Snøhetta, is Covered in Carvings Done by Local Artists and Sits Next to a Large Reflecting Pool. Although There Are Plenty of Books in Three Languages (Arabic, French, and English), There Are Also Museums, a Planetarium, and a Lab Dedicated to Restoring and Preserving Ancient Manuscripts.

If you're thinking about exploring the Peabody Library in Baltimore forget about it. They are VERY restrictive about who has access to the books.

I assume so, you don’t want any Tom Dick and Andy to wander in and fiddle around with priceless manuscripts 😂😂😂 Unless you have written permission from the library or a university affiliated professor, I wouldn’t assume anyone would be allowed to handle their books.

😂😂😂what does that even mean, it’s not like he himself established the library or that its zenith was under his tutelage, it just happens to be in a city that’s named after him. Also I’m pretty sure he’d be more pissed at its subsequent disuse and decline and eventual destruction due to neglect. Also Alexander famously didn’t care what happened to his empire after he died, he let his generals split his empire and he cared little for his legacy.

    • @4200timeB
      @4200timeB Před 3 lety

Well ill try an explane since it seems my small comment made such an impression on you. The library was supposed to be the greatest collection of written knowledge to ever exist at its time an first J Caesar burned it up a little but then the church with its all knowing logic burned it to the ground which im sure Alex would not have taken lightly. He had his " journeys" documented an collected knowledge from every where he went im sure that Library would have made him proud. So what i was getting at was that a grand collection of written word from all parts of the known world was destroyed an now looks like a giant man hole cover half open to the sewers.

      One.
Your comment didn’t make much of an impression aside from being grossly historically inaccurate.
      Two.
Julius Caesar did not purposely burn down the library and its collection, it just happened to occur during his occupation of the city of Alexandria during his civil war.
      Three.
By the time the church decided that the library should be destroyed, the library had by then had declined to such a point that, there was very little to its collections, and few scholars or philosophers if ever visited the once great library.
      Four.
One extremely damning fact that you keep referencing is incorrect. Alexander himself did not establish the Great Library of Alexandria, it was the first ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt , Ptolemy Soter. And even more damning the library wasn’t actually constructed until the rule of a later Ptolemaic ruler Ptolemy viii. So Alexander wouldn’t have cared either way cuz the library and it’s collection didn’t even exist during his lifetime.
      Five.
I’m sure that Alexander would be proud that at least something exists that emulated the once great library that stood on the current foundation. Though Alexander famously cared little for legacy and the fate of his empire following his death.

Well heres a case of someone seeing what he wants and not what was acutely written. Im well aware of who, how, an when . Never did i say Alexander built it nor that Caesar himself burned a portion of it . However your what...number 5 example ..So its ok for you to know what he would think or like or agree with but "I" cant have thoughts about what i might think he would like or not ? How dare i . thank you for having a vast knowledge of ancient greek history an being so much greater then mine i apologize for having an opinion. Try not to take things so literally . it was a jab at the dank ass library compared to the insanely beautiful ones in the video that proceeded it. Dam bro .
