  • The name Asklepios appears in ancient Greek mythology as the god of health. Asklepios became a competent physician with many qualities, including the power to resurrect the dead. Treatment centers known as Asklepion are temples built in the name of Asklepios. Those who come to Asklepion with faith use these healing centers to find healing, to be treated and, above all, to cleanse. This important health center is home to the three Asklepions of the ancient period; The Asklepion of Epidaurus (Corinth Greece), the Asklepion of Kos (Kos Island) and the Asklepion of Pergamon.
It is seen that Asklepions were generally built on spring waters or river banks due to the use of washing, cleaning and water treatment methods for health reasons.
Pergamon Asklepion health center has an important place in the historical process as it is also a medical school for the training of famous physicians of the period and the world's first psychiatric hospital. The radioactive properties of the waters in the region were discovered by people in early history and have been used for health purposes for centuries. This place attracts attention as a product of modern thought, even in the ancient times when disabled people were considered bad and punished by society and were excluded.
Pergamon Asklepion is located in the Bergama region, in the north of the Aegean Region, in the middle of the 5th century BC, during the same period as the Spartans. This Asklepion was established on the slopes of Geyikli Mountain, in a secluded valley, on a plain with water sources believed to provide healing.
Bergama, which is today a district of Izmir, has been a dense settlement area since the 7th and 6th centuries BC. It is said that Pergamon Asklepion was founded after the accident of Aristaikhmos, one of the distinguished people of Pergamon. According to legend, Aristaikhmos' son Arkhias sprained or broke his ankle while hunting on Mount Pindasos (Madra). When he could not find anyone to treat him in Pergamon, he went to Greece and received treatment at the Asklepion of Epidaurus. Satisfied with his treatment, Arkhias wanted to establish such a treatment center in his hometown of Pergamon upon his return, and thus, around 370 BC, he established the Pergamon Asklepion with the Asklepiadas he brought from Epidauros and Kos.
Three basic treatment methods are applied in asclepions. These; diet, hot and cold baths and body movements. Asklepion's doctors give their patients mud baths here, use medicines obtained from plants, and also enable them to engage in sports and music. Here, dreams are interpreted, patients are helped to recover through suggestion, and procedures such as surgery are performed when necessary. The sound of water is mostly used for therapy. For this reason, Asklepion became one of the most important health centers of its period with its medical, surgical and paramedical treatments intertwined through suggestion and belief.
Information about the treatment methods used in the hospital is obtained from the diaries that the famous orator from Balıkesir, Aelius Aristides, kept in Asklepion, where he stayed for 13 years. According to the diaries; Patients seeking a cure for their problems were pre-examined at a polyclinic set up just outside the hospital, where they were welcomed and examined by clergy physicians called Asclepiades. Terminally ill patients and pregnant women were not allowed inside. It is understood that everyone, regardless of their class, race or religion, is admitted to the hospital, except for those who have a terminal illness and cannot be cured.
According to legend, there is an inscription on the entrance gate of Pergamon Asklepion: "For the Sacredness of All Gods, Death is Forbidden to Enter the Asklepion." Thus, patients who think that they are protected from death as soon as they enter the door begin to feel better. The Sacred Way here continues to the entrance gate of the sanctuary and protects patients from adverse weather conditions.
Patients coming to Pergamon Asklepion were rested after the first examination, washed with holy water and dressed in a special white garment to prepare for treatment. Treatment of patients started as soon as they entered the big door. If the patient's condition worsened, the patient was taken out of the Asklepion. People from all classes and patients of all kinds come to Asklepion. Patients who come here but are not passed through Viran Kapı because their treatment is not possible are not accepted to these health centers. In addition to diseases such as paralysis, shortness of breath, stomach ache, insanity and blindness, patients with minor injuries also come here. It is also stated that by applying honey and the blood of the sacred animal rooster to a blind person, treatments with definitive results are performed, hoping that he will be able to see again.
