The fact that the puppet (named Norman) had a whole gofundme focused on repairing him after many years of abuse, makes me super happy. People really knew how much work was put into this. Thank-you Lunas puppets for your hard work.

That puppet is actually perfectly made, they clearly looked far into the uncanny valley and put a lot of thought into the design.

Also the fact he doesn't have a nose, but instead a small bump of skin

The tongue movements is what does it for me
@Regi the only part that’s animatronic is the head, the rest is just like any regular puppet
I find his face and expression ability a lot more endearing than a lot of other puppets. Like I wouldn’t lock him in a closet in my house. He could sit at the dining room table, share a nice meal. I hope he’s recovered from his trauma. He’s a talented dancer
What a nice comment Rachel. He has often been despised, but since the first time I saw him on MTV, many years ago, I have felt an infinite tenderness for him.

Accurate description, hahaha. This song always makes me a little sad because I had tickets to Depeche Mode with Interpol opening. I was super excited about both bands but my stupid boyfriend at the time insisted on a long dinner before and made us late. I was in a car accident recently and as much as this puppet alone used to disturb me, the puppets ordeal now disturbs me more. It’s like he’s going through shock. There in the moments, but not really there or present, so they feel like “scenes” to him. He’s out of body during the crash, the hospital doesn’t feel real, the vacant expression that people in shock usually have and then the end where he feel the loneliness of death after everyone who worked on him just leaves, because there’s no more they can do. I didn’t feel that last part, but everything about the music video before that really resonates with shock. Very surreal

Whomever built and animated the puppet is a genius. That close up show from 2:34 to the end of that sequence is so intracate. That's supremely good work. Mad skill.
You can see it frowning throughout the song (especially when it says "Oh heaven restores you in life") and honestly, the eyebrows sell the whole thing. It's almost disturbing how well thought-out his facial expressions are.
But what I love most is that, sometimes, the puppet opens its eyes wide, and it looks like it's (re)gaining consciousness, after phasing in and out of it.
@@matis8693 Also if you look close enough at the eyes, the pupils dilate either from light or consciousness.
But how did the puppet move? Like did someone/people move it manually and they were edited out or was Norman (and his very expressive face) controlled by electronic stuff (idk the word) off camera

The Music Video is a lot- it communicates emotions not through the music like most, but through the visuals and the fact that the main character is a puppet, a man who has no control over his own life, and only has aching consciousness.
The slight movements of his (Theoretical) eyebrows, anatomically correct muscle flexing on a *puppet,* dilation of his Pupils, artificial yet genuine expressions of concern, and everything. Norman perfects the feeling of surreality.

Interpol has many great songs, Evil is great but there are so many great songs they have, Turn on the Bright Lights, their debut album, is considered their greatest and was a game-changing classic album in 2002, definitely listen to that, Evil is off their second album, Antics, also really great.
Now I keep seeing that everyone's talking about "Oh when I was a kid I watched this!" or "My Sibling/Parents watched this and i've been listening ever since." But when I watch this. It makes me think about how this man faces no punishment, think about it he's a drunk driver and yet he suffer no major injuries and yet the other person is on the brink of death. I love how this song portrays unfairness of our world.
It's the angel of death coming for some lady in prison or at least that's what I always thought, idk tho I know the lyrics it's jus very complex or poetic, these older rock bands used to have wicked song schemes
That puppet is the thing of nightmares I tell ya and for the longest time I thought I dreamt this.
I think the concept is how heartbreak has left him feel as if he is no longer alive. But he loves the other person so much, he still feels like he would do anything for her as if he was her puppet.
Actually .... this is apparently references about the serial killer Fred West and his wife Rosemary West.
Paul Banks seems to have some fascination with serial killers.
The song pretty much is the story of Fred West dealing with the evil he had done, and trying to reach Rosemary twice and failed. And then a few weeks later, he commited suicide.

Heyyy fellow oddstories viewer
Tbh
Everyone keeps saying how creepy Norman is and I see it too but I also feel like sympathy for him because in a way hes oddly human and all that hes going through just makes him look very vulnerable and I just have this weird feeling of like wanting to protect him, especially in 2:34 when the nurse is holding his head and he just looks up at her with a very human-like look in his eyes. Is it only me that thinks this?
Maybe this is the point of the video, maybe he is supposed to represent a real person but the bad things in him make him inhumane (thus the puppet)? And its made to make you feel sympathy because everyone was innocent at one point?
The animatronic work on Norman is insanely well done. I keep coming back to just marvel at every movement he makes. The man who made him, Carl White, is actually a professor at Carnegie Mellon University so he's clearly well versed in what he does.
@@kaitlynjohanson7517 From what I searched, not quite as "normal" looking as Norman, but he definitely has other works. The closest that looks like Norman is the third photo that's pretty small www.wired.com/2004/02/white/
Although his Joshua character also has quite a personality. Here's another article that has some of his Joshua work www.kcet.org/shows/artbound/charlie-whites-culture-of-desire
@@huntforbigfloptober1333 His work is incredible thank you for sharing!
No that's dead on. He looks like how you'd probably feel after a car crash, weak, stumbley and pale.
Próximamente en México 🎉🎉🎉
the greatest music video ever made
2:28the way he reacts to the touch is so lifelike I almost can’t believe he’s not alive.
I noticed that! The people who programmed him did an amazing job, and clearly this video was well-planned
The only thing scarier than the doll is what this song is actually about
:0?? What is it about?
@@analaurahernandez5791 Well child let me tell you a story.
Long ago in England there was a couple. Fred and Rosemary West, they were called. Now, Fred and Rose were no ordinary couple. They were, quite frankly, evil. Together they killed 10 young woman in their basement. The police found the bodies buried under the floorboards. Fred hung himself in his cell. (hence "hey, who's on trial?") It's rumored that Rose sings to herself in her cell, in which she resides alone to this day ("it took a lifespan with no cellmate")
I just read the whole wikipedia page about the west family. I wish I didn't
@@danielgaliciacetina2576 agreed
And thats why it's called "evil"
Aggressively vibin to a song about serial killers
That's me right there 🤪
Norman's story matches so much to some of this song now, it's wild.
Never let puppets drive.
Who said he's a puppet? You are very missinformed
@john maziasz muppet
@john maziasz ask him yourself, he's under your bed
@john maziasz Arlene
The accident caused him so much trauma to his head, he turned into a puppet
Anyone notice that the puppet's pupils adjust to the environment? Really great work
Yep it's cool / scary
Let me see an puppets eyes work like a normal human
It's an alien lol.
That's because he's really alive...
I guess I don't see it
Everything about this song is amazing
❤❤❤❤yupi en México, muero de emoción
I freaked out when I heard it on Orphan First Kill. I haven't heard this song since it came out, I was in high school and I still remember the lyrics! The nostalgia hits hard man
@ray it was around the 18-20min mark, they were fencing
Gunnar winning the fencing contest. What a song.
Oppenheimer's your ophas
Run so your heart explodes in your chest
Orphan what?!
I started out being immensely creeped out by the doll and now I just watch in amazement at this marvel of practical and digital special effects (since Norman's handlers were digitally removed). The illusion is total.
And now the song's stuck in my head.
it is really creepy but the music video is so amazing, they did such a great job with it, if you like interpol you should check out Lonely Gimmick - Pessimistic Weather ,gives me strong interpol vibes,
Se rifaron más en el cover de mariachi 🎉❤❤❤
