I've had a California for 18 months, and I didn't know you could do that in one... (Hide the seat belt catches away under the seat )... Very good review :-)
I had a fixed high roof which was good as I could always stand up in it! The raising roof does of course mean that you can get into garages without too much trouble and should improve your fuel economy!
Oh yeah and thanks for showing the roof bed they all talk about it bu I could not find a video whit a review of it... :) Oh yeah where do you put your bags????
@ApologiaTV Excited? With the seats I think it's the same as on the conversion I have now - a lever between your legs at the front to release the rotating mechanism. The driver's seat is tricky to spin as you need to adjust the steering column and the front-back position and angle of the seat to get it in a position where it has room to spin. For the record I now have a 2007 T5 Transporter panel van conversion. Couldn't afford the California - the next best thing for less than half the cash.
would look nice tucked between my 68 and 79 vans, and wont freeze to death while winter camping would be a definite plus, Are the front seats heated by chance?
The California is not just that, it's got a twin turbo engine with 4MOTION (that's advance 4wd in VW speak) and a 7 Speed DSG gear box. To top it all off. Very nice.
A great review, well done. It's a fabulous vehicle, great specification, but what a huge price for a vehicle without a shower or fitted toilet. £30k would be a lot of money, but a lot more acceptable than £40k !!!
Strange why we can get these here in California Settlement, New Brunswick, we have the Rialto by Winnebago, its larger and costs around $35,000 to purchase. Oh Well Maybe someday they'll ship these to North America, or Build them in Mexico, Maine.
I had this van on loan from VW to test, so I didn't pay anything, but the price of that van new would be around £40,000 in the UK. It's the top-spec model with 4WD and almost all the options.
Yes, my old '68 Bay Window had stacks of character and charm but broke down all the time - no fun during the middle of a long trip! I'd take the California and its reliability any day, but I'd give my old van 5 stars just for the memories :-)
I'd buy this van in the US even if it means 25% chicken tax. In some of the T4 model ads I've seen mentions of toilet and shower. I wonder if they are aftermarket conversions.
No toilet and no washing facilities other than the cold water tap. It is still a van that fits into a standard parking space, down small streets and lanes, and is less than 2m high. I don't think I'd want a toilet sloshing around in the back of a van that size.
Hi, your review is simply awesome! But please can you modify tags? When i find your video, i try to find it as "Volkswagen California". After some time i need show your review to my granddad, but i try to find it as "Volkswagen multivan or transporter" without success. Can you add to tags these words? Thanks for fantastic review. Greetings from Czech republic. Please be patient for my bad english.
Yikes, so right you are. That price tag isn't one that many "volks" I know can afford. BTW, good info on that too... I never knew the definition of volkswagen.
I wish I had this its so cool I would drive all the way from Balkan to Norway :) btw if you put bullet prof glass, put kevlar on metal outside parts and a plug infront you get your self a perfect zombie apocalypse car :D hahahah
For the love of god, VW SELL THIS VAN IN THE US!!!! Absolutely ridiculous that we are unable to get a diesel AWD van in the states. People are paying $35-50k for remodeled Syncro Westy with a subaru engine... the demand is here.
Hello, your video is great because you show every fin on this superb Van !!!!
I've had a California for 18 months, and I didn't know you could do that in one... (Hide the seat belt catches away under the seat )...
Very good review :-)
The best review you can find on youtube for VW California. love it !
Fantastic review, I would like to buy one someday
Super good review, mad props! wish they had those kinda cars here in Brunei
Great presentation.. And good attitude :) Superb
Nice review, alot of detail. Thanks!

A great review, thanks a lot.
Note that if you are elderly or just not up to pushing up on a pop top, this is a dream feature.
@mepumuckl Not as standard options, but you could probably adapt it to do both those things if you had the tools and a workshop.
Not a fan of any VW, but a very big fan of the VW CAMPER VAN

great review! really wish I'd had one for camping the other week if I had a spare 40k!
Excellent presentation. Not a sales pitch, but an appreciation. Well done.
BTW, does anyone know WHY VW no longer sells Vans in the U.S.?
The California is not just that, it's got a twin turbo engine with 4MOTION (that's advance 4wd in VW speak) and a 7 Speed DSG gear box.
To top it all off. Very nice.
nice review...wonderful vw
@vrkuvrkuman If it helps people find it, no problem. Nice to hear you appreciated it.
Hey mate, you look really happy. Enjoy it
In my case the device to turn the seats is on the right hand side towards the rear of the seat.
A great review, well done. It's a fabulous vehicle, great specification, but what a huge price for a vehicle without a shower or fitted toilet. £30k would be a lot of money, but a lot more acceptable than £40k !!!
@jaybee2012 Thanks. It's a very nice van. Shame I had to give it back afterwards!

I though that the main market for this camper is in states, but I got fooled by the name I guess. Great review!
Nice van very nice for travel around australia in
Could you tell me the make and model of the top loading fridge please? I assume it is dual voltage and not a three way on gas??
Thanks for the clip!
Thanks sharing. I'll definately buy one when I win the lottery.
Отличный обзор!
Can you manually pop up the top? It seems excessive for it to be a push button...
yes and what about electrics and the window shutters, and no microwaves ?
I second that - excellent job!
As for your conclusion - I agree, driving a new VW camper does not have the kudos of driving a classic model!
Just picked one up today...still can't figure out how to spin front seats around.
fantastic stuff, cute kid, thanks for the birlliant review...
excellent review! I wish I could pick up a T5 here in Hawaii.... not imported into usa .... sigh
A nova kombi é linda só que não veio aqui ainda no Brasil eu quero um dia ver
what does "back" mean on the pop up roof menu thanks
Yes, my old '68 Bay Window had stacks of character and charm but broke down all the time - no fun during the middle of a long trip! I'd take the California and its reliability any day, but I'd give my old van 5 stars just for the memories :-)
what happened to yours
Where's the toilet and wash facilities though? Would expect some sort of basic provision these days for that sort of thing.
I'd buy this van in the US even if it means 25% chicken tax.
In some of the T4 model ads I've seen mentions of toilet and shower. I wonder if they are aftermarket conversions.
Do you use this car on your daily basis?
Thanks!
@Kubaydk There's no toilet or shower option from VW on this. You'd need a bigger van for that really.
No toilet, why not.
No toilet and no washing facilities other than the cold water tap. It is still a van that fits into a standard parking space, down small streets and lanes, and is less than 2m high. I don't think I'd want a toilet sloshing around in the back of a van that size.
@Kbrusky15 Possibly in an emergency but you'd almost certainly break it. It's a bit of precision engineering, not an upturned boat on sticks. :-)

Es un avión!!

thanks for sharing this video, well done!

Nice
A bit torn on the VW California. Seems great but I would really like the ability to shower, as some other campervans have.
We here in the United States we get the cheaper Chrysler VW minivan with the 4.0L v6.
I wish I had this its so cool I would drive all the way from Balkan to Norway :) btw if you put bullet prof glass, put kevlar on metal outside parts and a plug infront you get your self a perfect zombie apocalypse car :D hahahah
you are a lucky guy :)
wow!!!! I like it.... but is very expenxive....
In Spain VW California T5 2.5 TDI 140 cv Comfortline 55.000 Euros
If only they sold these here in California...
i want one... :(
@alexander53988 Thanks
Dear Santa....
VW California, not available in the states. Irony.
please please please sell in the us! its called a california, the least you could do is sell it there!
Were is the toilet??????????😄😆😊☺
some good info on these at vw-california-owners-forum
I'd be a "happy camper" if they'd sell the California IN California!!! :( Why don't they??
o kurwa... piękny

No toilet, no way. Hardly compares to a standard RV.
a lot of money for no bathroom and no toilet..wow
the electric pop-up is totally overkill and just sucks all around -- VW has gone way way down hill, that also sucks..
зубы бы вставил, телеведущий ))
The irony: a California name but can't buy in U.S.
Good job VW marketing department.
It's call California that our State our name in the United States, and we don't get to have it. VW chame on you!!!
$80,000 for this??? For a crappy vw??? Hell no..... Its a cool van with cool features but its a vw not good quality.
40k £? No thx. That's a lot of B&B's....
0:24 FAIL
only 4 seats. tahts crap
