Its crazy to see Pioneer Kaserne so ran down. I have a lot of great memories of them days. Watching this brought some back. And reading the comments refreshed them. I was in HHC 130th Engineer Brigade from 92-93. And yes I remember E Tony's Pizza. Great Lasagna :-)

Also not sure if you remember Kiele Jackson (not sure if I'm spelling her name right) but she was a friend as well. Scott Fenner? I have a picture of my father sitting on the short wall at the end of Building 8 on September 3rd, 1956 while he was stationed here at Pioneer Kaserne. He also had a picture, which I found in my Grandmother's Bible, of the chapel from that time period. I spent nearly four years in Building 7 with the 814th Engineer Company (Assault Float Bridge) which fell under the command of the 130th Engineer Brigade which was in Building 6. I have a picture of myself sitting on the wall at the end of Building 7 from 1991 and pictures of the chapel from then. I returned to visit Pioneer Kaserne around Thanksgiving of 2005 with my family and took pictures of them by Building 7 and also took pictures of the chapel. I was fortunate to have three generations of my family visit Pioneer Kaserne over a 49 year period. I met and married my wife while stationed here.

It is a huge area of 40 ha that was given back [by the US]. They are discussing what can be done with this area… partly houses that are under monument protection, lots of wild life, so nature preserved… they are about to decide what to do: housing or industry or just natural preservation."

Where are the three story buildings, fieldhouse, and the rest of Pioneers great buildings? I heard it was built as a part of of the Nazi build up in 1938 & 39. I can't believe it's been left to rot. Those buildings were well taken care and could have been used for so many different uses. I did see a post here saying how Smerinan's left barrels of oil and other hazardous materials behind and that sucks. In a Country that's so environmentally friendly that you can't even cut down a tree without getting permission first they really should have done better. A sad way to say thanks for being a good neighbor and farewell.

Can anybody explain why there are bus tours through the old base? In the video, there are MANY buses with people on it. It puzzles me that so many Germans would want to see a vacated US army base. (I wish I understood German to know what the tour guide is saying.)

Every time there was an alert and we had to go to the alert area and as we pulled out the gate of Pioneer the communist were there writing down truck numbers and all along the way you would see more of them. We never knew when the alert was coming but the communist did and also the food truck people that were waiting for us at the alert area to sell us coffee and food

I didn't feel like translating the whole 8 minutes. I summed it up in a nutshell... And NO, it wasn't a "press" bus. I should know. I was sitting in it.;-)

That is sad, unlike our 3rd Sqdn 14th Cav Kaserne that is still being used today in Bad Hersfeld. I came up with the idea to place a Cold War 3rd Sqdn monument there. The Kaserne can be seen here czcams.com/video/Y4gpWYCfNfQ/video.html
