I absolutely LOVE 1960’s patterns! You mentioned you are too young to remember the 1960’s, but since I was born in late 1950, the 1960’s were my teen years. By the time I was 14, I was sewing all my own clothing. We were so blessed in our tiny little school to have a home economics teacher who would allow us to do what we COULD do rather than making us follow a prescribed regimen for each school year. We sewed a lot of suits, coats, dresses, etc., with wool we ordered from a big woolen company on the east coast (a big deal to us - we were in rural Oklahoma!). We lined, underlined, used horse hair interlining in our coats - truly couture for such a a little rural school! I haven’t sewn in years and know there are much better techniques now that I don’t know, but I really hope to get back into it by the end of the summer - having cataract surgery next month so it will be a while!
Sorry this is so long, but I am so happy to have found your videos! You are so inspiring! Thank you!

I love 1960s sewing patterns, although their sizing was different then todays sizing. So i find i have to fudge around with that. Here i go with one of my stories...lol like i said my grandmother was a tailor and she taught me to sew. When i was 12 which was 1973, my grandmother gave me a 1952 sears catalog she had laying around. I became obsessed with that thing. I would look at the fashion in there and it just blew my mind. I would sit and sketch designs from this catalog and mix it with 1973 styles. Then one day i was at my aunts house and behind her house was a bit of woods and beyond a field and me and my cousin would go walking back there and just hang out. So this time we did our usual thing and we came upon some boxes and what look like some trash so we were looking around and i opened this smallish box and i about had a heart attack! It was full of 1960s patterns. You would have thought i won the lottery. I took that box home and my mom said what are you going to do with those? I said...im going to make them! She said..but honey these are from the 1960s, of which my grandmother sitting at the dining table, said to my mother...Allena(that was my mothers name), you leave her be, she has a passion, let her discover it. From then on i was obsessed with old pattern. Not long after that my grandmother brought me a box she had and gave it to me. She said this is where my passion for sewing started and i want you to have it. It contain 6 old patterns that she had kept all these yrs. They were from 1927 to 1932. They were her favorites and she held on to them all those yrs. Also in that box was my great great grandmother wedding dress that she made by hand with no sewing machine. All of which i still have including the 1960s patterns i found.

I was born in 1952. Started sewing in 1960... sewed my way thru 4-H, Jr. High, High School and still sewing today at 66!! LOL I am enjoying your "love fest" of the 1960's patterns. So many of the patterns you show I have either sewn that exact one, or one very similar to it. I have never been one to run to the Mall and buy clothes so I can look EXACTLY like everyone else! LOL I love to sew with wild colors and patterns. I have always had trouble with ready to wear as I was SHORT! (5 foot on a good day and slightly shrinking!) Even mini-skirts were knee length on me! LOL I found a mock wrap miniskirt/skort pattern, made some major length adjustments and proudly wore my 14 inch long miniskirt! (that was actually a pair of shorts with a mock wrap ) and managed NOT to disgrace myself when I bent over!! LOL I now live south of Miami Florida where everyday is summer. All my clothes from up in the Snow Belt (even the summer clothes!) were too heavy to wear. I discovered the joy of sewing simple shifts and shirtwaist sundresses in Lilly Pulitzer fabric/Key West hand blocked fabric (yes.. you can still find ORIGINAL Lilly Pulitzer fabric!!From the 1960-1970!!) I love marching to the beat of my own drummer and wearing one of a kind clothing!

I love what you’ve written, Connie!! Heck yes, march to the beat of your own drummer!! That’s what makes the world interesting and fun.👏👏I’m envying your hot and sunny days, my friend. We were set to vacation in our wildly-adored Naples, FL in February but something came up. So I am really missing Florida. And how do you find the vintage Lily fabric? Online auctions? If that fabric doesn’t scream sunshine, I don’t know what does!!

Yes, I LOVE the 1960's era styles. I love the classic, elegant details: the necklines; the collars; the ruffles; the various belt detail; everything about them. The styles are so ladylike, so elegant, so sassy and so classy, oh and so flattering. Btw: I'm currently sewing up a dress from a 1963 pattern. When I learn how to share picture on CZcams ( if it's even possible) I will share one of the finished project.

I had forgotten how much I loved these styles. Born in 53 so I was just getting interested in fashion in the 60’s. Loved, loved, loved my tent and yoked shift dresses; and they were so easy to sew. My neighbor sewed Vogue patterns for me as neither me nor my Mom wanted to attempt them. Great memories. Thank you!!

Vogue always had that reputation - being just a bit out of reach. Or somehow you had “arrived” if you sewed Vogue. Well, I’ve just sewn a Vogue pattern and I’d like to give them a piece of my mind!! LOL
I couldn’t agree more about tent/yoke shift dresses. I’m sitting here in one, having just gotten home from church. These are easy to wear, stylish gems. I’m going to make more! Thanks for writing, Lorna.💕

You are looking fabulous in this dress and the patterns are simply wonderful. I think I prefer them as the modern ones. I am looking forward to watch a 60 s dress series made from you. I remember this era very well started sewing (self taught) in 1960 the year my daughter was born and she needed clothes and we couldn’t afford to buy them. We were an AF family living in NH and fabric was relatively cheaper than buying readymade so I was launched and have been sewing ever since. Ohhhhh it seems so long ago I am now 79 ... but still sewing. Thank you for your videos they keep me going love ❤️ Joanne

Born in 54 and absolutely loved the sixties and seventies clothes. I remember so many and wore so many as well. We made a project in home-ec in high school when learning to sew. I made a jumper at home and a pair of pants I believe at school. Loved it so much. Got an A minus simply because I forgot to trim the bulk off the interfacing,LOL The rest was perfect and I did wear it. Oh how I miss those days sometimes but can't go back. Must go forward.

Viv you never disappoint with your vlogs. I was born in 1960 and very much remember my mother’s “groovy” wardrobe. The tent dress was particularly memorable because she had about 6 different ones when she was pregnant with my twin brothers. I just love the 60’s and and early 70’s fashion. So much so that my sister and I who were both born in the same month (1 yr & 20 days apart ) are thinking of giving ourselves a 60’s themed party where everyone has to come dressed in 60’s fashion. We’ve been throwing it around and I think your vlog has inspired me to go for it. Of course I’ll have to make us some outfits. Sis is knitter and I’m a sewist so we’ll see what we come up with. My fav of all the patterns in today’s vlog was 7491. Just gorgeous. Happy sewing and fabric shopping from very hot Miami, Florida.

I DO remember these styles and sewed many similar dresses (born in 1956). Hats off to the slip pattern-I still wear one under my dress, even though I know its old fashioned these days. It helps to make the dress "hang" nicer as well as prevent any see-through! Much easier than lining a dress any day. I plainly remember wearing white gloves when I was dressed up-always on Sunday to church but at other times as well-weddings and such. I also remember that I had a little purse that HAD to have a handkerchief in it, a small comb and a tiny mirror because that's what young ladies carried. I also PLAINLY remember-being a tomboy- stuffing the gloves in the purse as soon as I was out of sight of my mom and not putting them back on until I had to go home-haha. Yeah, they were pretty much a pain to wear. I also remember a conversation between my mom and her sisters about the "new" fashions with no waist or a straight skirt and although they would be much cheaper to make due to taking less yardage, they were certainly more risque than what they had been wearing and they weren't at all sure they were going to go for the new look. Wow. What a neat memory. Love your videos-I'll be sewing this weekend on something for sure. Stay warm!

  • @artisticrabbitatease2806

I knew it. You're in my age group -- October 1962 baby here. Another video well worth my time to watch and learn. Thank you for that. I, too, love the 60s style. The styles were solid classic foundations and still are. I believe my fascination with the 60s style has a lot to do with my mother. She was a fashionista in her wardrobe and hair, etc. She always looked excellent. I especially love the extra pattern that Michelle from Canada included with your purchase. How thoughtful and spot on! Thank you for sharing.

Your post has given me some insight, thanks! I went for coffee with my neighbor and she asked why I love the 60’s fashions so much. “You didn’t wear them and can’t remember them,” she said. My mom also took great care with her appearance. And the fashions of that decade were classic and classy but also comfortable and not quite as prim and complicated as the decade preceding. Hmmm, it’s fun to think about this.😄👍

I graduated in 1976 and learned to sew in 4-H. Sewed a lot of my bell bottoms during high school. Requested a sewing machine for graduation and made many outfits until clothing stores came into our area that were so inexpensive it got to be more expensive to see than buy. Specially since Walmart came on the scene. Now I sew very minimal and then it’s things for our grandchildren photo shoots that have now taken my time in place of sewing. Your enthusiasm strikes a sewing nerve in me👏🏻. Who knows maybe I’ll go thru my endless collection of patterns and get back in the saddle 😂. Lovely to hear from you, Cynthia! Your grandchildren have a wonderful grandma. Mass produced fast fashion definitely dealt sewing a blow, but hey, there’s a small but mighty brigade of us keeping it alive! Younger sewers love the indie patterns. I say, it doesn’t matter what we’re sewing...it only matters that we’re sewing! If you decide to make yourself a dress, I hope it’s smooth sailing and a delight. How could it not be?😄💕

A couple of the patterns you were showing, I used to own and made dresses from. Unfortunately they went in a garage sale many years ago. The dress with the gathered drop waist you mentioned you were going to make out of the red and white striped fabric , my Mom had hired a seamstress to make some dresses for me for school like this. I think I was in 10th grade. Then the A-Line dress showing a white dress on the right with a lace piece down the front. I had made that one myself out of pink sheer cotton fabric. Brings back some memories. I was born in 1953 so I remember a lot of these.

When I saw Simplicity 7529 I thought it looks almost identical to the one I made. It is the one on the far right. Mine was a pink sleeveless with a white ruffle down the middle. The old movies of Doris Day and other actresses at that time are some of my favorites. Their clothes were just beautiful and they were unique looking and classy. Dear Viv -- I learned to sew very young -- in Girl Scouts and 4H and from my mom. I have a sister who is 10 years older, and I would watch her sew her own clothes. When I learned, I felt like I was my sister, and it made me so happy. We had a Singer Featherweight -- it is made of metal instead of plastic, and it fits into a seafoam green case. As the youngest of my siblings, I used it last and still have it, and sew with it occasionally.
I'm also a child of the 60's, and I, too, long for the 60's style and aesthetic. I watch Turner Classic Movies, especially for the movies where Edith Head was the costume designer -- think "Rear Window" and those lovely clothes on Grace Kelly. Even old Perry Mason episodes, they are interesting to me for the designs, the clothes, the furniture. There are some really clean lines in design in the early part of the decade. By the time we get to where I can remember things, the clothes were becoming more free and loose, but still beautiful. (I will withhold my comments on the 80's.) There is a used furniture store near me where I live, and their offerings are from the 50s and 60s. Hubby and I go in there to window shop and dream about lasting design and beautiful things to look at -- wall art, well-made actual wood furniture, etc. So I guess I'm taking a long time to say that seeing these patterns is a similar happy moment for me to look at the designs from the 60s and the classic, lasting designs from that era. There is a reason we long to see these things, and I think part of it is the simplicity of composition; very pleasing to the eye, and a spiritual relief from all the chaos in life as we know it now. Yes, things could be chaotic then, too, but what lasts are those things we can see and remember, the physical nostalgia. Thank you, again, for a great post. Have a great weekend, much peace and happiness to you.

I want to print and frame your post, Amy, and hang it in my sewing room. So eloquent and spot on. I’m a bird of a feather with you; old movies and tv shows cause me to say, “Look at her dress! Oh, wow, look how that jacket lapel is cut,” while the rest of my family just wants to watch the show.😂 I’m the owner of a 1957 Featherweight, she’s my little treasure and sews a straight stitch that nothing new can touch. I bought it when I was 17, with my own money ($70) and I use it to this day. Life is uncertain and chaotic now (I happen to believe we are definitely in the end times) and looking back at an era of decorum and class is comforting. Like you say, life was still a wreck back then, but by golly people looked good!!😂Thanks so much for writing.💕

If you’ve still got those patterns, you’ve got a little goldmine, peggy! Bravo!!👏👏I adore these styles. However, I just sewed up a 1968 maxi dress (sleeveless with square neck) and the neck facing was mind-numbingly bad. Oh my. Took some shine off the apple. I muddled through and have a terrific mess on the inside of the garment, but at least it’s done. That’s one 1960’s pattern I won’t be revisiting!!

I just came across your channel!
I also collect vintage patterns and pattern books when I can. Most of my patterns are from the 50s and 60s, from ballgowns to pajamas to loungewear to vests. There was so much femininity to fashion back then - and more imagination in the designs. Many have elements that are wearable today! My favorite pattern catalog is from Modes Royale Patterns which went out of business by 1970. The ones from the 50s are amazing! Such details and an eye for uniqueness!
BTW - I'm a Gen-Xer - born in '68, and only got to see these fashions in family photos and my mom's old clothes in our attic!

Love the Vogue patterns. It's still my favorite company. I was one of those 1960's sewists. It was either sew it myself or order something ghastly from Montgomery Wards catalog. BTW, by the mid to late 60's gloves had lost most of their popularity. My mom still wore them, but except for dance class and maybe Easter my gloves sat in a drawer. Thanks for your videos!

    One funny story.... 👒🧤👗
I was about 5 maybe and Mama dressed me up in my little hat, white gloves and dress for Easter Sunday. Oh yeah, the little white lace topped ankle socks that turned down. Little white shoes with the strap across your foot. Hope you get a visual of that little girl....
Well the church took a group picture and I had already took off the gloves and my hat was sideways in the picture!!! I wasn’t fond of wearing dresses and gloves and hats!!! Guess it showed in the picture. I still have the picture and remember that Sunday very well! I was like - do I have to wear all this silly stuff 🙄 and she said yes it looks so pretty!!! She wondered what happened come picture time!!!

No three, one was sheer, two side to go with sleeveless dinner dress, wore it on a cruise, it got compliments. One was black and the first one was a practice green fabric, I turned it into a great Christmas one with Santa and reindeer sewn to the front and back. I wore it to a Christmas bazaar and got two compliments on it. So fun. The capelet is fast and fun. From a beginner sewer.

You should cut the bodice with the grain as it is marked. It will matter more there than on the skirt. BUT, I did a sleeve crossways once, and it never did do right. I'm not sure I'd mess with the grain! The skirt will be more voluminous! You'll know this, as much sewing as you do! Be sure and keep us posted!

People got sick less in the days of gloves. We even wore white gloves to church and Sunday School as children. You didn’t stick dirty fingers in your mouth with gloves on. Or put finger prints on glass cases in the department stores.😉 Fru-fru hats too, EVERYWHERE. Men too. We’re were wearing those yoke dresses daily to Jr. and Sr. High school. Hello Veronica, welcome aboard!😄👍I think it’s interesting (and probably a mite confusing) how Americans call dresses worn over shirts jumpers, and the Brits call pullover sweaters jumpers. But I agree, a jumper is a marvelous garment. You can completely change the look of it with the choice of top worn underneath (in some cases you can wear them with no top underneath, as a stand alone sleeveless dress), and they’re flattering, skimming over what needs to be skimmed over! They have fallen in popularity a bit. But I adore 60’s styles and I’m willing to sew a jumper or two. New Look included a jumper in their 2018 winter pattern release.
I’ve enjoyed our jumper discussion! Thanks!🌸

I loved the blouson dresses of the 60s. I made one In a green paisley. The waist was gathered, rather than elasticated. So, at the top to bottom put together stage (raw seams, no sleeves set in, zip inserted but unhemmed). I tried it on. I discovered that what goes over boobs downwards does not necessarily go over boobs upwards. I got in a muck sweat trying to get the thing off. I had visions of sleeping in it and having to go to work in it. I LOVED the style and the material.... after further struggles I eventually cut myself out of it. A dress I have NEVER forgotten!!!!

Fantastic patterns and your site. Just love seeing what you are working on. I know I made several princess line dresses for school. Graduated in 1966 so all looks familiar. Your summer dress idea is great. Horizontal lines add width and vertical add height. Holding the fabric to yourself will give a good idea how that cute dress will look. Thanks for the zipper sight. Make lots of trousers and use heavy duty metal zippers for the front closure. Always looking for bargains. Have fun and looking forward to seeing what you make. Happy Spring.

I have to check out that website. Thanks. I wore juvenile versions of some of those styles as a kid in the early 70s. There is a similar pattern out now for the ruffled tent dress in your mag. Simplicity Patterns 8636. Make the one with the ostrich feathers! That Vogue stole coat! Love. Vogue 7044 coat is fab! Those palazzo pants look pleated. Awesome. Groovy.

I just found your podcast and enjoying them. Some of the patterns you were showing in this podcast brought back memories. I had outfits from a couple of them when I was in high school , nursing school and first married. I made a few and my grandmother made me a few. I guess I am showing my age. Lol I have to go through my pattern collection maybe I might be able to make a few for me or my granddaughters.

If you still have some 1960’s patterns, Peg, you’ve got a little goldmine! These styles can so easily be made current with modern fabric, and they’re a blast to wear. We have a lot of nurses in my family, so may I thank you for your service. I know you must be a compassionate, healing kind of person.💕

Love the patterns from the 1960's. I sewed from Junior High School through 12th grade, graduating in 1966 age 19. These patterns brought back so many memories. There's one that I did not see, that was the Chemise. It was a dress with long bodice and shorter bottom added on. It was all the rave back then. I made a navy blue Chemise dress, trimmed in white pique fabric around the neckline. I loved that dress.

hi Viv, what a treat this was! I love 60s fashion because I was born in the late 50s and my Mum was a home dressmaker. She made me A-line shift dresses which were flattering and I also remember having a shirt dress which I had to wear with a slip as it was semi-sheer. I used to make fancy gowns for my Barbie doll back then too :)

I love your videos. You are a natural screen talent. I want to start sewing but feel a bit scared of the process. You are an inspiration.

Bless you Julianne, so complimentary. Thank you!! I understand your fear; sewing can seem utterly overwhelming, but that’s just because we live in the era of massive communication and choice. Pare it down to simplify a bit and start out with a garment that’s going to work: nothing complicated or overly fitted. How about a skirt (elastic waist), a pullover tunic, anything kimono sleeve, a caftan, an A line dress. The fabric guidelines will be right on the envelope, and buy some fabric that you love. (I highly recommend Fabric Mart Fabrics for their fantastic sales.) Pin, cut, sew. Get a few of these basic sews under your belt and your skills grow naturally. Along with your confidence. It truly becomes ...should I say addictive? That word is too fraught. It becomes such a joy that you want to sew more. Even the mistakes and duds move you forward.👍I hope I can be of help along the way! I think you might just fall in love with sewing.💕🌸

I made my first dress in Jr High in 68 for Home Ec. We were all required to use the same a-line sleeveless dress pattern by Simplicity. I received an A for it even though the lace was a little crooked. I think it was really because I was one of the few students that didn't get my finger caught in the machine. LOL. Kind neighbor gave me an old sewing machine that was missing 1/2 the face plate but still worked.
And I made those pants in high school. GROOVY BABY, thanks for the memories.
