All our lives we are schooled into saving our money. Buy a house. Get a car. Save for holidays. Save for retirement. Then you get penalised for having savings if you need to apply for benefits. The health service will take it when they insist on you moving into an old age home. The government will take your savings in tax or penalise you because of your foresight.

40% tax relief on pensions will go, and they'll be a cap on how much you can have in ISA's tax free - amongst other things. It won't be a tax on the rich, it will be a tax on the sensible.
Personally I think the forty percent tax threshold on pensions should have been scrapped years ago, there should only be one rate for everyone.
Next worry is inhertance tax relief for agriculture.
They could remove that for farmers forcing all farms to sell up on Britain. Even the bigger farmers.
And who going to be able to afford these farms? Wealthy foreners who won't even farm just turn farms into houses etc.

That is a great policy. Should be kept in line with the minimum wage so if you work the average week (38 hours?) you only pay income tax if you get more than the minimum wage.

Saved for years and years into my pension in a fairly low paid job and had a tidy sum to give me a few comforts in retirement. Along comes Gordon Brown, taxes the pension schemes out of sight. When I took my pension 5 years later it was worth half of what it was and my pension income was halved. Only just keeping up with the costs of living now, no room for comforts. Not so for public sector workers whose gold plated pension is guaranteed, inflation proofed and payment into their schemes are 10 times that put into private pensions. Those are the wealthy people Starmer should be chasing after as they are so rich. They do not need savings because they have such overblown generous pensions. Those on private pensions do need savings because you cannot survive on one of the poorest state pensions in Europe alone.

The only " Savings" I have is money put aside for future bills, car tax, petrol,car insurance, house insurance, MOT & servicing for car costs, boiler maintenance, gas & electric & water bills, council tax, brown bin payments, TV licence, so not for luxuries,just for survival...... That's a total fking lie - I had savings when I was made redundant in the 2008 crash and wasn't entitled to much govt help - that year cost me over £15,000 while idiots with ZERO savings got full govt benefits. how is the remotely fair? I had savings because I didn't waste money on crap, had few holidays or expensive take out food.

I'm drawing a deferred pension that doesn't even cover my monthly bills, I have two others that are worth tuppence. However, after scrimping and having some funds from share Saye schemes I've managed to save some money in an ISA, not the richest but this was going to supplement any shortages in pensions. Lived frugally , worked hard, wife has nothing , pension that I am drawing is 50% underfunded and another one is 17%, poor performance and litigation on the company the SAYE shares gone south. I hope they aren't going to target me because I've tried to cover myself and re direct the fruits of my labour to someone who expects to be kept by the government.😊

I'm a worker. Worked all my life. Saved my money, paid into my private pension, now he thinks I'm rich. My savings and bank balance may look like I have more than others, but I worked hard. Never claimed benefits, always had to pay full price for dental work etc. I've not had nothing from the state, pay taxes on my pensions every month. But it's not excessive amounts, yet they think I'm better off so want to raid my savings so I'll end up on benefits. Madness!
