    Quentin Tarantino was so pissed at the Academy because he knew if he won Best Original Screenplay then he wasn't gonna win Best Picture. Even though everybody knows Pulp Fiction deserved to win Best Picture that year.

    • @TheCPComedykids
      @TheCPComedykids Před 8 lety +270

      That doesn't make a lot of sense. If he LOST best original screenplay, then he'd have a reason to think he won't win the top prize. But winning should give a boost of confidence if anything. Look at the history of the screenplay wins. Usually it's one of the two screenplay wins that wins best picture in the end. Look at Birdman, for example

    • @tomtalks23
      @tomtalks23 Před 8 lety +477

      +HenryAND Thomas Usually a bold, original film such as Pulp Fiction is given Original Screenplay as sort of a "consolation prize", that way they can give the brave, acclaimed film an Oscar but give a "safer" pick Best Picture (such as Forrest Gump that year, which is a vastly inferior film to Pulp Fiction). Birdman is a rare exception.

    • @thewrongend

Gotcha.”

    It’s really interesting to go back and watch these older ceremonies. To think where a lot of these guys would end up in the industry. There is also a very interesting story lying underneath of this Oscar win. Both Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary actually had beef with each other at this time. There was a huge feud over Avary’s credit on the film. Since he had helped come up with the stories, he wanted a co-writer credit, but Tarantino wanted sole credit for the screenplay. When the film was being developed for release, that is when the feud started. In the end, it was negotiated for Avary to get a story by credit. Avary was not happy about it. It actually led to the two of them having a falling out which was certainly beginning at the time they won this award and would be fully established in the time that followed.

    I remember as a child when I left the theatre after watching a double feature; of Superman & Superman II, I felt like I was walking on air. Probably 6 or 7 at the time and man I was pumped. Never thought I'd ever react that way to another movie especailly as an adult. When I left the theatre in 1994 after watching Pulp Fiction I was so stoked. I drove my car really fast with the radio blaring. Man it felt good to be alive on that night. Just like watching Superman as a kid

    @Tylerd172 this is the most precise speech ever. Most screenwriters who win don't have to thank anyone but the academy voters, those who inspired them to write what they wrote, and those who helped get it onto the screen. If it's truly original, then any extra thank you ("i'd like to thank my [spouse]") is just a matter of principle.
