Guru Larry on Gamesworld - 5/5: Beat the Elite

Alas, all good things must come to an end (as well as the crap things) and we come to my final episode on Gamesworld.
This episode it's Beat the Elite, where I face up the resident in house gaming masters, the "Videators".
First of all I was told to keep quiet while the videators did their intro blurb, shame as I'd have loved to have mouthed them off, had ideas and everything :D
Anyhoo, couple of things were quite memorable for this part of the show, first of all, the first Videator, Metro, after I filmed the bit where I took my hand away from shaking his, Andy Collins came up to me and said I had really pissed him off doing that, seriously! It was just a joke, but he really took it personally for some reason, so he barely spoke to me, other than some snide retort to when I asked him does it feel odd playing in your pants (can't remember what he said, something along the lines of "doesn't it feel odd...") anyhoo, he stormed out the building the moment this finished filming.
And the second Videator, Lord Leslie Mathers, the only videator to return from previous seasons (albeit in a change of character, he was "Mr. Mathers, the Megabyte Millionare" in previous series') and Games Master viewers will remember him as that bloke who beat Virtua Cop on one credit and played two Virtua Cop 2 machines at once...
Anyhoo, blathering on. We played 1080 snowboarding and 2/3rds down the race, it's pretty close and I'm beating him, Mathers pauses the game and complains that his joypad isn't working properly and demands we re-start the game from scratch. It didn't seem anything wrong to me, we were quite close and there wasn't anything erratic about the way he was moving, or complaining. (1080 is notorious for having difficult controls anyway)
Anyhoo, we had to restart the entire challenge from scratch and I lost as a result. If you watch closely you can see the joypad change colours in his hands.
It did piss me off, it didn't matter to him whether I won or lost, and it was also the end of the series. So I've always been highly suspicious that he pulled the oldest trick in the book as he was losing.
The other thing when he moved away he cracked my knuckles with his blunderbuss when he swung round, hurt like hell too, but obviously he didn't do it on purpose or notice it.
Mathers I do actually speak to quite a bit now, he lives down the road from me and he's been commenting a lot on these videos when I post them up on Facebook. So he's in for a surprise when this one appears :D
But there you go, my week on Gamesworld. Sadly I literally got knocked off the grand final list, by some police man who got lucky with points, so I never went any farther. This was also the final ever season of Games World, so my aspirations of becoming Philip the levitating Owl were sorely dashed.
But six years later, I did finally become a presenter on a video game TV show, Game Guru, Which is where I got my "Guru Larry" moniker from.
I'll upload an episode of that someday if you're ever interested!

The Nintendo 64 had like, 6 different colours for controllers. I wanted to collect all of them when I was young. As it happened, I only got the white and yellow ones!!!!!!

Bloody hell, I remember watching this in the six weeks holiday when I was 10. I put on about a stone because I always used watch GamesWorld whilst eating a copious amount of custard creams. Eddie Essex used to scare the hell out of me so I was probably eating out of anxiety.

Jason Kilshaw (Eddie Essex) is actually a real cool guy. He worked in quite a lot of Videogaming outlets in various Media. Now is up in Bridlington. Lovely person from my convos with him :)
I remember I played Metro once on that big Nintendo Lorry thing that went around, we had a game on Street Fighter 2 Turbo and we used the exact same characters. I got him down to his last bit of energy but sadly, he dragon punched me as well, he was sick at SF2.

The guy who plays Lord Leslie is the best actor in Gamesworld. Really convincing as a snob and the interaction with the host is brilliant.

***** Really is a shame he plays pretty poorly after that. I'll bet that kick kind of threw him off his game. I like how the host backs off because he's clearly afraid of him after the kick. Conversely it's ludicrously hilarious how serious metro took the fake-out hand-shake. I mean the fucking loon comes out to play video games in just his fucking shorts, and then gets mad at a little heel/face play? Obviously he lacked a sense of humor and had no idea how entertainment is supposed to work despite being on... a television program designed to entertain. And really they all over-act rofl so it's not even out of place to see you acting like such a nutter. Seems like they should've just went along with it for some writer free gags. I'm sure they paid truckloads of cash to writers to write awful shtick and you give them some for free and they all seem to shit a brick.

Oh he was seriously pissed about that. I only did it as a joke, but he was a real moody/sarcastic prick to me afterwards. Then stormed off the second the filming had finished.
Which is ironic as the other guy I played against, I'm actually really good friends with now, we speak a few times a week.

I feel a bit of a prick for saying this but seeing you with Violet Berlin on Bad Influence and Andy Collins on Gamesworld, that makes two gaming shows with mild speech impediments. There was also Dominic Diamond on Games Master, but of course I for one would never dare suggest the Scottish accent could be considered an impediment...

Yes, there is few clips from the show with english subtitles. Just type in "Dendy New Reality".
This is really cool program about video games for Dendy (Russian famiclone), Megadrive and SNES. It is have 2 seasons (about 60 episodes total approx. 30 min each).
Original air date 1994 - but mostly 8-bit stuff because of economical situation in Russia. You know, dissolution of USSR and other. Megadrive and SNES was worth about 1 month's salary (official games 1/2, 1/3 cost of the console).
aww man you deserved that win, heard that type of thing happened alot over on gamesmaster too, people winning then pulling the old "my pad stopped working" trick, my cousin does it "i pressed it but it didnt work" swap pads... still says the same stuff xD its become a running joke now when he is round here playing, you are a good sport though, catching up on all the older videos I had missed, guru larry back to back session in progress haha
Here I thought Metro played the part really well, stayed in character... but no, great reading your description man. TV Production is, funnily enough, what I'm really interested in and it was great getting the story here.

I loved it when you told the Audience to shut up. I suppose challenging the Vidiators was like taking on the Elite 4. I must say you did play well in this series & you made it to the top 5!.I'm glad you never got thrown in the pit too.

When I was a kid I loved watching Games world I use to love the Elite one of them is a hunter the other is a Pub guy and a Boxer, I wish if they reboot it and put on CZcams that would be awesome

I find it funny that he got so upset about it. The entire Videater stuff is about playing up to the cameras, had he rolled with it more they could have had some quality comedy between you both, especially if they had allowed you to interrupt them, but I guess they just had a script to work from, rather than a character to play up.
This was the one thing I wanted to do when I was young was to get on that show and beat Big Boy Barry
That Slap-o-Rama game was hilarious!!!!!!!! Especially the facial expression of Andy after getting slapped!!!!!!!!! ;*P
I'd forgotten about the unbelievable shape Metro was in!!!!!!! He really gave video gamers a good name with it!!!!!!!!!! And yeah, it was pretty horrendous that they wouldn't let you engage in battles of wits with the videators!!!!!!!!!!!! All I can say is that the producers mustn't have had much faith in the people they hired to portray the "larger than life personalities!!!!!!!!!!"
What part of the video did Martin Mathers hit your knuckle with his blunderbus??????!!!!!!! I couldn't find it!!!!!!!!!!! ;*( It was nice to see him as a nicer, more comedic character though, because the megabyte millionaire character was kind of intimidating!!!!!!!!! ;*( And all I can say is Mathers must've started letting his gaming capabilities slack if his record was 2-2 on this series, and he was losing against you in the first round!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember him seeming to be unbeatable in the last series with Bob Mills as the host, when he just crushed everyone, and didn't even let his opponent win who'd gotten through to the grand final, when he absolutely smoked him on Donkey Kong Country in a speed challenge!!!!!!!!! Whereas I often thought Big Boy Barry couldn't bring himself to put in his full effort, and beat his opponents when it came time for the grand finals!!!!!!!!!!! ;*P

We had similiar thing on finnish tv in the 90's but it was called Game over and it was hosted by rubber dummy. Difference was that it had reviews and tips. Also the contestants phoned in and had to play games by telephone by pressing the number buttons.

Argeine Thriton Yeah, I learned about that after reading Larry's explanation of what happened. A real shame because Larry could've actually won, I think. But now apparently the guy lives just down the street from him and Larry said he's not such a bad guy so all's well that end's well, I suppose.

Supposedly in Russia we have show called: "Sonic Super Hedgehog", where families played 16-bit videogames against each other for the prizes, but nobody have VHS tapes with it to this date, so no videos in the internet.
"Dendy New Reality" also don't have all episodes, still few missing. And existing episodes in horrid VHS quality (much shittier than this video).

I've loved watching these episodes even more as I never watched them when they where originally aired. I had 1080 on the 64 and remember loving it, so when I got a wii I downloaded it and was horrified at how shit the controls where. Nasty game!

By the way, I always loved the green M. Bison outfit in Street Fighter games!!!!!! It just felt so different, and yet nice and stylish in a dictator-kind of way!!!!!!!! And the manner in which you lost reminds me of why I stopped playing as Bison in Street Fighter games!!!!!!!!! That hard low kicking slide attack can be so easy to block and counter, with you not being able to do anything to protect yourself once you've blocked it!!!!!!!! That's why it was probably best to go with medium/light low kicks as Bison!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way, I like how these Games World videos all have a comedic pic of you as the the thumbnail preview images!!!!!!! ;*P

And thanks for the past couple of years, I've had a knee injury that had complications for about 2 years, still recovering so your videos have been a part of that, particularly when I'm frustrated about not being able to do things (Sat down with knees bent hurts, meant a lot of no videogames!)

Larry, you'd not lose them. here's a tip. when you upload them, just do a mass upload of them so that they get released a week apart. if anything, most of the subscriber base will either have a nostalgia-spasm or they will get introduced to the old classics that we loved so much as kids. you could still upload your normal stuff too :D
