VEPdate - Citroen BX back suspension is too high, but how to lower it?

  • Face down, ass up! That's (not) the way the suspension is supposed to be, because it doesn't drive as well...
Before the #bx40uk event too place last weekend, I made some last minute alterations to 'VEP', my mk1 BX 16TRS. One of those things was to reset the rear suspension height. But how, you say? Well, here you are!

With the ass end up high the caster angle of the front wheels will be lower then spec. And that will have an adverse effect on straight line stability and dynamic camber. So good thing you corrected it.

    • @UPnDOWN
      @UPnDOWN  Před rokem

I don't think it'd make *that* much difference to castor angle, but yes it all adds up.

Ah it's so lovely to see a Mk1 red BX, I convinced my Dad to buy a used 16trs back in the late 80s, having dragged him round car showrooms since I was a boy. Ours was red and was the same colour as a 2cv i had. Our bx had the alloys but always preferred the sunflower wheel trims.
Our car had probs with front struts seizing and the the rear trailing arms wearing. Great car though, as a Design student I loved the interior, but would've been so much better as an auto...

There's a bronze bush in the bracket that the 'trombone' that links the height corrector to the roll bar, it sieze up and affects the rear ride height. BTW I still have my flaring tool for 3.5mm tube, I also had gear for regasing spheres but scrapped it a couple of years back. Owened a GSA, 4 x BX, 1 x Xantia and a ZX.

    --
The first thing to do on an incorrect height problem is to check that, with the lever in the normal position with the engine running, the adjustment of the manual control is correct... it may very well have been hit or disturbed by a worker who did not know what was going on. 'it was.
In this case for the rear, the connection hook with the automatic control must be in the center of the small window of the manual height control transmission.
this simple return to conformity cancels the most frequent problems of its kind.
if there is a real need to have to touch the automatic control (the collar on the anti-roll bar), it is necessary to ensure that the manual control does not interfere during the trial and error of adjustment. (always lever in normal position and engine running of course)
When attaching the collar to the bar, the bottom of the small U must not be in contact with the small ball joint of the corrector drawer.
The operation will in fact end with the precise positioning of the ends of the manual control, which consists in having no action of the manual control in the normal position but also a centered play.
The importance of this good centering is to have a total action on the low position to allow a complete emptying of the suspension circuits when one wishes to intervene on the spheres, the corrector must be forced to the exhaust even when the car is on the ground. For the semi-high position, this will allow a measured forcing action on the corrector which will maintain a certain comfort (you must not be on the travel stops). Finally, this good centering also avoids excessive action on the automatic control rods and possible breakage of the connection weld on the control levers of the corrector drawer.
As always, nothing very complicated but the quality of the interventions must be serious, good functioning and reliability at the key. Understand, Read your documentation carefully.
good luck to all in the maintenance and restoration of your good old grannies.

Is it worth noting to NOT get under a hydraulic Citroen unless you have enough space to vacate yourself if it were down fully?
It can only take a slight nudge too far on the height corrector to completely lower it and if you're under it, well, its not great.
I had the Xantia on ramps while I was swapping the corrector linkage on the rear, and I had it very rapidly come back down at me when I was levering it into place!

    • @MrManBuzz

I think that principle applies to any car you get under, not just a Citroen. I wouldn't get under a car not supported by a stand, or lift.

When I've read about the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution, and Whitworth and all that, the importance of machine tools and gauges has been very obvious. So the precision wooden block appeals to me greatly; and I am aware of the importance of organisation in the workshop, when I discover you can end up using the wrong precision wooden block.
Also, as you say at the end, big wheels and skinny tyres. Why? I ask. I nearly bought a BMW i3, lovely little car, except the huge wheels made it a pig over ordinary urban roads with small pot-holes. Why? We do not live on the Nordschleife.

Spidey-fact: You can tell the gender of a spider by whether it has a pair of "boxing gloves" on it's front "antennae/leg" things; if it DOES then it's male, if not then it's female.
The "boxing gloves" are the spiders' reproductive organs.

A BX assembled incorrectly? Never heard of it! Definitely didn't happen on one of my cars with the small octopus being twisted and strained and it totally didn't cause one of the height corrector return hoses to crack right at the base and subsequently pissing away all the LHM in the parking lot at my job.

Nice, my 1991 BX16E image is riding a tad high with the rear to. I dont have access to a ride on lift, so must find a good pit.
My left front suspension rises with a jerk when moving the suspension, whats up with that?
Other than that, it rides lovely.
