  • George shows how to replace a typical Aqualisa cartridge. This applies to most Aqualisa mixer showers from mid 1980's until now.
Buy Aqualisa cartridges on our website: bit.ly/2oWY9kH
Below is an explanation of different types of cartridges:
Grey ring on cartridge number 022801. (Thermostatic)
For Gravity, Pumped Gravity, and balanced high pressure systems.
May also be used for Combi boiler systems when flow regulator is fitted.
Pink ring on cartridge number 022802. (Thermostatic)
For Combi boilers and Multipoint water heaters or unbalanced systems.
Green ring on cartridge number 022803. (Thermostatic)
For balanced high pressure (Obsolete) now use Grey
Blue ring on cartridge number 022804. (Non Thermostatic)
Not suitable for Combi boilers and Multipoints, we advise replacing Blue with Blue
White ring on cartridge number 022805. (Non Thermostatic)
Short cartridge only fitted to the 430 range between 1993 and 1996

Thanks for this - a massive help for me replacing my grey cartridge with a pink one after getting a combi boiler (previously pumped gravity). One gotcha was that for me, when I took the grey cartridge out, there was an o-ring and white plastic ring on the back of the cartridge. This wasn't on the new one, and had to be added. Initially I didn't add it, and I couldn't turn off the water from the shower, and there was no temperature control. Once I added the white ring into the slot at the back, and put the o-ring on after (onto the end of the cartridge), it worked fine.
    Hope this helps.

Great video. Very instructional !! Having done this job several times i would certainly agree that the small 'O' ring is very difficult to remove.. I would suggest using a metal 'dental type' tooth pick to get behind the 'O' ring to gauge it out. Luckily, replacement of the new 'O' ring is not as difficult - although it is still very fiddly. Oh - and just an addition to the video - don't forget to turn of the hot and cold water feed to the shower before starting to replace the shower cartridge.

Make sure you put screw in the T25 screws very tight! I put mine back together and it was still dripping and I was almost about to give up, but one last try saved me from called a plumber. The instructions that come with the cartridge are pretty great apart from not mentioning how tight they need to be

Carried this operation out on an ancient Aqualisa 200 tank pressure model today.
    My comments.
When the shower started to leak I had a plumber come and fit two tap type stop valves in the hot and cold feeds for £60. These were accessible in the airing cupboard so we used these to stop the drip for about 3 years!. Eventually the leak returned as the water in the shower body itself was dripping off the temperature regulator arm.
At first I thought I would not bother to renew the "O" ring, but it leaked when the water was turned back on.
The crochet hook suggested to remove the "O" ring is hopeless. At first I could not see the existing ring and could not feel it with the crochet hook. I eventually stabbed it with a pointed curved blade on a scalpel. I think it fair to say you need something to stab it with, rather than just try to pull it.
As other say getting the new one back in is definitely a fiddle! You will need a second person to hold the torch and 3", or longer fingers! My longest finger is about 3". I did use the crochet hook to help pull it in to the groove while trapping it in the groove on one side with the screw driver.
Otherwise the instructions were good. I had the brass ferrule model for the screws that hold the new cartridge, so if you have, heed the warning and re-use the brass machine screws. You will need the new machine screws to re-fix the temperature regulator ring.

My Aqualisa shower mixer valve has been in situ for many years and had developed a water leak at the temperature control lever. Despite undoing the screws, the valve was still lime scaled into position. I had to put the on/off cover back on and gently manoeuvre it until I dislodged the offending line scale.
It’s difficult to see where the water leak was but at £198.00 for the complete valve, I’m prepared to spend an hour or two looking for it. The gasket and ‘O’ ring set costs around £16.00 on Amazon of you can’t seal the original rings with petroleum jelly or CT-1.
Great video, I’ve just added comments on other problems I encountered?
    Good luck.

Very helpful, thank you. The question in my mind is, how would I know whether that tricky O ring needs replacing? The instructions that came with the Aqualisa cartridge said that they recommend the O-ring is replaced. This video implies that it normally doesn't need to be done - and I can testify that it's tricky getting the old one out! What are the symptoms of it needing replacement? Many thanks.

I was going to get Aqualisa to replace the cartridge for me, but they won't do it unless the shower has isolation valves. I said they can turn off the water for the whole house, but they said that won't do.
It's a combi boiler system. There is no water in the house higher than the shower, and nothing comes through if I turn off the main stopcock. Is there any reason why that wouldn't be safe?

My Aqualisa shower has been dripping for a while now and so when I saw this I thought great, I will have a go at replacing the cartridge. £110 later the new cartridge arrived and I followed your instructions to carefully remove the old cartridge, the hard-to-get-to O ring, then replace with a new O ring making sure it had seated in the groove followed by the new cartridge. Gently tightened the brass screws and turned the water back on and..... it still drips! About 1 drip per second, apart from that it works fine. What have I missed - or is it something other than the cartridge causing the dropping?

I have an Aqualisa Hydramax (torpedo-shaped) Shower control which has been in my property since I bought it as a new property in 2008. I have just sold the property and should be completing towards the end of June but the shower has just started leaking cold water only when it is turned off. It started as a few drops but the rate of water loss is increasing rapidly so cold water is trickling constantly at an increasing volume. I have been quoted £260.00 + VAT by Aqualisa for them to come and replace the cartridge or £328.00 if I want a total up-grade including new shower fittings. Is it possible to replace a seal, washer or other components rather than the whole Aqualisa Hydramax cartridge as I don't think I can leave this to get worse and it would not be a pleasant thing for a new resident to be faced with as soon as they move in?

Inherited our shower which was quite old and had 1 of the bottle top blanks RIP open and so had a little leak , luckily we were in and shut the water off.
Plumber came and fixed that but then messed around with the shower dial itself for along time .
When he left we noticed later that it dribbled ever so slightly. Never mind I'll order some seals and fix it myself luckily I'm quite handy.
But noticed- number 1- the water had been tracking back through the ring / collar and dropped into the drywall where it had made the stud wall a little damp. :(
When I fitted the seals there were none on the fluted spindle, I believe this is where the smallest seal should go ?

Followed up to 2:00. When I removed the temperature lever though, there's another round plastic case which I can't work out how to remove. This covers the screws to the cartridge (presumably, I can't see them). Also there's a small black plastic unit in front of the cartridge with wires (red white and blue) leading from it into the cartridge - looks like it hugs the side of the cartridge then disappears into the unit somewhere.

That is to say, when the knob is fully turned off, water continues to come out the shower. I had to put the old (identical) cartridge back in again just so I could successfully turn the shower off. Check is that you have fitted the cartridge the correct way round, it is possible to fit it 180° out and this will cause it not to shut off.

I am not able to unscrew one of the four screws holding the catridge. The screw head is damaged (rusted away). Any suggestions on how to unscrew it?

Shame you did not demonstrate the tricky bit - the O ring replacement - because, as you say, this is the first question the manufacturer asks if a fault develops. Also you do not explain what the o ring does and when it must be replaced.

Shame you didn't show changing the 'o' ring, which is the most difficult part of all of this.........rather than just referring to it!

That 'o' ring is the absolute worst .if that ring is worn or it's been dripping for any long period it gets mashed into the body and it makes it virtually impossible .
Easily changed when it's a demonstration on a new body ....nightmare in real world on ,an old ,faulty valve .

What a COP OUT, Well what you've shown us could be worked out by anyone that can change 13amp plug and is just a reversal of taking it apart .
What you didn't show was how to fit the O Ring, Which is an absolute Nightmare.
Getting the old one out with a hook is piece ice of cake, getting the replacement O ring in must be the most tedious job a person could ever do in their lifetime

Thank you for this. Our ancient Aqualisa thermostatic shower wouldn't turn off recently (fortunately, the isolators are nearby), and I've just replaced the cartridge (and the o-ring, oh yes!) with the help of this video. £75 for a cartridge off Amazon, compared with £170 for a plumber to replace.
