My Dad served in the RAAF in WW2 as an aviation mechanic and worked on these . He had a real passion for this aircraft.
That engine sounds so good...
And the colorway is Fantastic.
Thanks Kermit "The only one that will be flying outside of Australia" well done mate thanks to you and your crew a little bit of Australian aviation saved thankfully cheers to you from down under.
My Dad worked at Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (C.A.C.) from the late 60's through to the late 90's. 32 years. We used to have the childrens' Christmas parties at the factory at Fishermans Bend, Melbourne. Wirraway registration BFF was the first Warbird allowed to fly on the civil register In Australia in the mid 70's. RIP Dad.
And they built F86s there under license and they used the engines out of the Canberras in them. Which were more powerful than the engines the Yanks were using in theirs. So ours have better performance than the original design. The Airforce has one flying which they wheel out at certain airshows, I wonder where the rest ended up.. probably in some south america junta military..
Most were given to either Malaysia or Indonesia, I can't remember which, but most only had a few hours left on the airframe. Point Cook Museum have a couple, I think, and I seem to remember there might be one on static display at Sale. I don't know about the other bases around the country. The Airforce one is based at Temora, and they'll be having their bi-annual display later this year. Well worth the trip.
I always try to take the time and thank people like you for commenting and sharing interesting parts of their lives, these things would be lost to time if not shared. So thank you.
@@rthefish . Malaysia
@@rthefish . There's at least one in Adelaide
Getting there slowly and patiently with so much expertise on site, the Wirraway looks splendid.
What a beauty !!!! Gorgeous plane, cant wait for Kermie cam ;-) Great job, it looks great.
I know, Id love to see the business end of the plane ^^
Issues aside, it looks and sounds wonderful.I can't wait to see it in the air.
Thank you for preserving all these historical aircraft ! . Beautiful aircraft , looking forward to seeing it fly .
Looks much better with the cowlings back in place
thanks Kermit, these things are dear to our hearts
Cold starts make good mosquito killers. Thanks for cranking up another one.
Great job Paul and crew.
Sounds goo and you guys did a great job with it! This has to be among the rarest of the rare, they were such poor performers, but at the time there wasn't much else available. The Aussies did pretty good with what they had. Nice addition to any collection, I hope I can come see it some day!
I could watch these videos all day and night!
Thank you so much for all you do for aviation Mr.Weeks. Live our dreams Sir.
Beautiful restoration ! Can’t wait to see her fly ! 😀
Highlight of my youtube day.. a new Kermit Weeks video! Taking my fiancée to Duxford (UK) this Saturday for the first time. I’m hoping she’ll enjoy ;)
What a frickin dream to have all those warbirds. That's my dream job to work in this field.
Such a beautiful plane!
She's getting there good job guys
That's coming along nicely. I look forward to seeing it up where it belongs. Great work by all as always.
Well done guys on keeping these planes going , and particular this Aussie plane, good to hear temora guys were assisting you in problem solving , cant wait to see it fly over there.
So cool Kermit, I love how you explain your start up and flying along with you keep the great video coming 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸👌
That is neat, fun to see! Thanks for posting, Regards from Alaska!
Great video gentlemen! I can't wait to come down there and see the Fantasy of Flight Collection!! Keep up the great work. Stay safe and God bless.
Looking good and good looking...sounds even better!!
Awesome to see, my father flew them in the Pacific.
If Kermit can take out a Zero with it, then he gets shared parking rights at the Australian War Memorial. I can't look at a Wirraway without thinking of the Australian pilots who took off to take on Zeros in them while the dust was still settling in Pearl Harbour.
That airplane is probably the Australian trainer equivalent to the AT-6 Texan. Nice looking aircraft. I am going to have to find a plastic miniature replica to build of this air craft. I am also going to have to go down there to Fantasy of Flight when the pandemic is over. I can hardly wait until the Bf-108 Taifun is flying.
an interesting read on the Wirraway, Boomerang and CA-15 in a book by Stewart Wilson
It's awesome to see a Wirraway moving under it's own power
Me at start of video: "Did you check the cowling?" :D
I really wish I had the money and the means to get down to see this place. I love planes and what you are doing is great. But at least I can check some of it out on CZcams. Keep up the great work and keep saving those Old planes and keep them flying cause that is were they should be not on the ground as a place holder.
I can't wait for the boomerang project too
Mr Weeks you live a truly blessed life ! Keep on keeping on sir.
When you rip off people by charging them to get into a museum then pulling a bait and switch, a word other than blessed comes to mind.
Kevin T was not aware of that .thanks for info much appreciated .
Hmm, it get's good reviews though?!
Capitano Americo I really hope that’s not true . But the way the world is today, it’s not hard to believe.
Which is sad!
Is there a video of this old girl in the air yet? Have been through the videos on your channel and couldn't find a more recent update than this one. As I live in the city where both the Wirraway and the Boomerang were built and where a Wirraway was on show in the museum throughout my youth, it is good to see one alive and well. Thanks.
No. It still has not had a first flight.
Great looking project. Almost ready to fly.........and so far the cowl has stayed on....🤔🤔
good video well made
Very nice plane
Great! When you get a spare second, how about a rebuild of the twin wngined wimmera? Thx.
Uou! Now THAT is a video!
Very nice. Be good to see it fly. Is A-436 all original or a bitser?
The greatest job in the world! Sign me up...
I hope it flys some day before I die.
Where's the twin browning machine guns mate?
next you need an AT-6E with the ranger v12
New video cameras take the spin out of the propeller
So much in common with the 'looks' of the T-6 (Harvard or Texan)!
That's because it basically is one.
It was a licence made copy by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation
@@MartintheTinman I know... :-)
@@Franky46Boy . No worries
IIRC the Aussies loved the Brewster Buffalo (fighter)….
That's because before that, we were flying rag wing biplanes with half the HP.
little bit of oil in there on start up
And why is it not able to fly? Too heavy? Heavy pilot?
Didn’t the boomerang use its engine initially?
Small world. So did my dad
Hugh ailerons on that thing!
Whats that 10’ tall pole for? Vertical aerial fueling?
radio antenna mast, later designs had a small "shark fin" style under the fuselage or a football shaped blister on top, behind the rear seat
Sounds like my old Webra...
Pra mim num resolve nada
I take it youv'e flown one before, so you'll know what to expect in the stall :) (makes a P-51 feel like a pussycat compared to the Wirraway!). Wirraway means "Challenge" in the Aboriginal language - it sure was :) You yanks changed the wash-out on the wing with the AT-6 for a reason :)
It sure was a "Challenge" for the crews that took it into combat. Up to 1,500 Pounds of bombs, crew of 3 (pilot, navigator, gunner), 2 x Vickers E guns in the nose and 2 x Vickers K guns in the rear hauled into the air on a 440 HP Wasp engine.
There is a few cylinders not working there.
The engine or the crew?
Looks a bit like a t-6
At first glance I thought it was a Grumman Avenger.
If a "vintage" airplane "type" has never earned an airworthiness certificate in the U.S. does it have to be "operated" as an "experimental" aircraft? Or by avoiding "controlled airspace" and flying VFR can you "bypass" all of the "rules" the FAA has set for civil aviation? I was kind of surprised to learn from an airplane-nut co-worker of mine years ago that if you "self-insure" and don't operate in "controlled airspace" you and your airplane don't need ANYTHING in the way of "certification". No pilot's license, no airworthiness certificate - nothing. It's kind of like driving on non-public "roads" or even having no "driver's license". If you don't subject yourself to "government", you're not subject to "government" laws, regulations, etc.
Total BS!
You have to be a licensed pilot for this type of aircraft, as well as the aircraft being licensed and registered by the FAA. This type of foreign warbird would be licensed under "Experimental Exhibition." The only thing you can avoid by avoiding "controlled airspace" is not having to talk on a radio!
Single-seat ultralights and hang-gliders do not need to be licensed but as soon as you add a second seat, they ALL come under the control of the FAA and the normal regulations for ensuring public safety.
She’s beautiful.
