- It doesn’t matter if you have the fastest or the most maneuverable fighter aircraft in the world, if you have to engage in combat without a good weapon or two. And it’s not always about the caliber. Take the Italian P.108A anti-ship aircraft, for example. It was armed with a massive 102mm gun… which sounds amazing in theory, but in reality even an experienced pilot would find it difficult to use it effectively in combat. Why would you risk missing most of your shots if there were more convenient and consistent ways to deal damage? Today we’re going to talk about one of those more practical options - the best seven aircraft autocannons available in War Thunder. The Hispano, the German MG-151… and other guns that you can rely on in any situation.

Never thought I would hear hispano and reliable in one sentence but the snail must be right.

They were probably reliable in the context of the war. Similar to the brownings. The main problem with cannon fighters in ww2 was that most cannons just werent worth putting on fighter planes because they were usually harder to maintain and to get in large supply during the conflict where you needed nothing more than numbers and consistency. There's a reason America had a lack of cannon fighters compared to other countries, other than how they wanted to keep their aircraft lightweight and with enough ammo for long missions.
Hispanos probably worked similarly for the brits. Cheap, easy to use, easy to maintain. In the context of a real life dogfight you weren't usually threatened with the problem of sparking. Dogfighting is very analytical and numbers based. If a spittie dragged a 109 into the kill zone it was unlikely that bf-109 would get out of it without getting downed, thus making any bad hits irrelevant

Well you can't just spray like with Browning's, or at least for me. Short bursts works wonders, why I dominate in Tempests and spits

They also take way to mamy head-ons a second after telling people not to do so in the shooting range
That's adens, they basically have unlimited ammo, that spray was more like 1/8 of the ammo

They are quite dangerous in heli battles but appart from that...
In the MIG 21 bis it is a good gun just the vulcan is way better
But for some reason the M61 and GAU-13 aren't on the list

I remember hearing it's actually a server-side issue. The explosive damage has a delay when being applied, so at higher speeds or some angles, the damage is essentially applied where the plane *was*, not where it *is*. It's flown past the boom at that point. Hence, they are really effective against aircraft from the rear or the wings of large bombers, but absolutely AWFUL in jets.
Idk why it gets so much hate.
With stealth belts it works very well especially at low-mid brs.
@@Damian-03x3 Yeah, I've had the best success on the Typhoon (Ib/l) and Tempests. Though it starts to become incredibly outdated in jets, like the Meteor mk4/8 or Venom.
@@jojomaster7675 At 4.0 they're absolutely great. Mainly talking about the Sea Hurricane Mk.IC and the best P-51.
At higher brs they range from ok to boring.

I guess it’s the lack of accuracy? I’ve often used them on the Keiun and in headons it’s a hit and a miss. Aside from that though, I agree

I agree so very much. Every cannon before the 105mm L7 just got so beautiful to hear. I'd hate to go back to pew pew sounds after playing with these.
They're good, but definitely could be improved. M3 brownings don't sound right since the update

I personally has had good (not great) expirience with hispanos, they're not as bad as shVaks.
I'm a british main, and i can confirm that ground targets belts are the best for planes

@@retro_mac138 Parts are kind of weird modification. Tanks didn't repair in the battle max the crew could repair themselves were tracks and it didn't take 30 seconds. FO everything else the tank would be towed back to base and repaired there. It makes sense for the parts because unless they hit your engine you can go to cap and repair there.
FPE research shouldn't be a thing. Next time we are gonna research having engine, tracks and gun? Just imagine starting out as a bunker and getting RP when enemy get's near you or hits you. This is what FPE research feels like. Pure nonsense.

Mk103 is my favorite because with armored targets rounds it can pen up to 95mm of armor which makes it really good for destroying tanks

My favourite plane armament is the swedish 13.2mm with its hef-t rounds.
My favorite is the American AN M2 20mm cannon those guns still work and are quite effective
I would definitely replace the Ho-5 with the Ho-155, the 30mm version. Nice ballistics, accurate, and the tracer belt has all-explosive rounds with 60grams of tnt equivalent on each shot.
The drawbacks would be a very slow rate of fire, very low penetration, and low ammo on most aircraft it's used on, with perhaps the exception of the J7W, and the R2Y2.
Those things are so fun to use.
not to mention the Ho-5's pathetic 4 grams of filler really doesn't do it any favors. Contrasting against the Type 5 and Ho-155 which enjoy nearly 60 grams TNT equivalent and 920m/s in a pure HEF-T belt.

The M61 Vulcan isn't an autocannon, but a rotary cannon. Autocannons only use 1 barrel but rotary uses multiple.

The M10 (37mm) cannon of King Cobra P-63-C5 is underrated. It's very deadly!

Not as good as the one on the ITP.... Can sustain multiple hits with the airacobra gun but Jesus a single hit from the ITP and I'm dead. Like Russian bias ain't a thing lmao
but it has a slow rate of fire compared to all the autocannons listed, and also isn't present in enough vehicle.

of course the rate of fire isnt the best but i remember back when i flew my P-39's i used to oneshot BV-238's
MG-151's are amazing,I love them and it's Minengeschoß rounds are absolutely devastating
my new favourite autocannon is the hispano suiza hs825, amazing muzzle velocity and excellent rpm, also super accurate
I still have a soft spot for the MK 108, though I wouldn't want to try and shoot down a fighter with it.
In theory the mk 108 is good, but in wt and in real life it was very bad
It's really good at close range with a bit of lead. Obviously you can't go for long range shots with it though... :(

The NR-30/Type-30 is a lot of fun to use. They never have enough ammo; but the range and stopping power means you can pull off really good shots with it
When the American 20mm is so good it's only beat out by a 30mm at top tier you know it's good.

The list doesn‘t even cover all guns…they used the AN/M2 gun instead of the AN/M3 which is a straightup better gun…so the list isn‘t accurate…

I love using the Mg-151/20 on the Bf109 F4. It’s excellent in mixed battle as it shreds both planes and aa trucks effectively.
I always loved the AN/M2 and it’s update in the F2H

NR-30s. The damage on them is actally insane with AP belts. Sound effect is kickass, too.
The NR-30 or whatever on the SU-7 I really like, idk it just feels really satisfying when you hit a good shot

@@jojomaster7675 I can say they definitely don't spark as much in my experience and have much higher explosive power. They are also more accurate on longer bursts.

The type 99 model 2 cannons are amazing to me, not to get confused with the model 1 guns that I've seen a lot of people say that all zeros have in war thunder as up till the a4m5 series they all do and it can be a bit of a pain, but to all those unsure about playing Japanese aircraft they really are worth it in the end

This is about autocannons on airborne vehicles
My favourite weapon is the Leopard 2K autocannon it's so good for anti air and ground targets lets say for destroying cannon barrels in a few second or Planes wings with a few Hits I just love that leolard 2K autocannon
The autocannon is the lovechild of machine guns and normal one-shot cannons. And a treat to use in all kind of warfare

I can't tell you this with total precision, but from what I've seen and I know, it's to measure the wingspan of the aircraft and make the aiming adjustments

I like the Mk-103 and the AN/M2 Autocannons the most , not only because of their performance but also their sound , AN/M2 sound's is just perfect for me .

I firmly believe that the F4U-1C is one of the absolute best mid-tier planes in the entire game. It's got all the perks of a .50 cal F4U, but those 4 AN/M2 cannons are simply a game changer.
My absolute favourite is the 30mm Hispano HS 825 found on the new Sagittario!

My favorite weapon is the 30MM gun on the r2y2s and the Killa, because it's extreme damage, high rate of fire and when using tracer belts it has a higher muzzle velocity than the .50cal gun

These are just version marks:
A-0: designation of 10 pre-production aircraft
A-1: first serial Do 335 (single-seat fighter-bomber)
B-2: single-seat zerstörer (German designation of heavy fighter) up-armed and capable to carry additional fuel tanks

There’s an option to turn on camera shake, which is quite similar to it.

My favorite Canon is the MIG 15 Canon because it Can fire up to 450 rounds a minute and I love the big ball of flames coming from the muzzle
The MG 151 is very powerfull... i got so many kills on the "Veltro" Series III thanks to those, and if an Italian Aircraft can make so many kills even if the Italian Aviation was always a little late at updating to the latest technologies, than that gun surely is a very powerfull one

An honorable mention is the 20mm Vulcan. It doesn't have very good penetration, but the sheer rate of fire will obliterate any aircraft it happens to see. It does have a short spin up time before it can fire so timing is everything.
It's not an autocannon. It's a rotary cannon.
20 mm mg 151 should be the runner up list along with an/m2 because of OP mine shells

the Sagittarios new HS-825 30mm is the best canon in my opinion the Muzzle velocity and accuracy are awesome
My personal favorite is the Vulcan used as the internal gun for the F-4 phantom
I’m a big fan of the 20mm Corsair even though I end up using the later .50 cal variant most
My favourite is the Ho-5. Since it's fire rate is awsome, and stupidly accurate. It just made it to the list since it is a bit weak in destruction. But with the Ki-43-III otsu for example... You will just have to aim for the cockpit, if your enemy was so brave he tried to deal with you in a dogfight... Or their API rounds will just light him up from the rear, like a candle.

Hude fan of the 37 mm on the Yak 9T, Rate of fire kinda okey, but when you hit something it's deadly, i almsot always kill in one hit
My fav auto cannon ist yet in the game, its the 20mm Mg 213, it is the germab ww2 predecesor of the Aiden. 20x138 mm rounds with a fire rate of 1200 per minute. And it was convertable to 30mm with Minengeschoss as well.

@@ironcell26 None that i know of, it's a late war german prototype that most cannons after the war where based on, t-160s, colt mk12s, aden, defa and if i remember correctly the nr 30 as well

The Ki-44 II otsu with its horrible muzzle velocity on the 40mm guns is fun to use
