    Stray Notes:
    - Correction on 15:00 - *commodities, not communities
    - I messed up on pronounciation on some things - my apologies!
    - This is not supposed to be a deep dive into heteroglossia (hell, I don't even scratch the surface), but rather to get heteroglossia kicking to get people thinking about it. I think some might find my use of heteroglossia in the context of space to be monoglossic, specifically in mind that I'm focusing just on space, but the reason why emphasize just space is to show the various vantage points that set up the network of the work. This ISN'T the only way to read both works, because these aren't the ONLY ways to get into them!
    - I wanted to be a brief exploration into seichi junrei, there's a lot more stuff than just this, and there's a lot of different threads that are really worth checking out!
    - The locations I showed in the video aren't even HALF of the locations! I just wanted to stress that there are, and if you google pretty much any trips, you can find a lot of locations in Oomachi, Kizaki-ko, and Matsumoto!

    I'll pin this post in case any errors or issues arise because I treat CZcams like it's Discord.
    I literally ran out of space in the video description, so more stuff:
    Huge thanks to Kei from Otaku Deity for translations and double-checking some of Japanese:

    Huge thanks to Lorpo, the artist, who always makes great stuff:

    Additional Stray Notes:
    - this video took a lot of adjusting, aligning, and realigning, so it's a lot of little editing things; always the challenge with a 4:3 to 16:9 ratio
    - Andrew Robinson has a great article summarizing Heteroglossia and how they play together. It's in the text section if you're interested!

    Very interesting video, thanks for making it. Both of these series have a strange nostalgic connection to me due to me watching them when they were still airing and the person I was at the time, but I don't think I've ever thought about them in this context before. Makes me want to go back and revisit the shows again so I can observe the concepts you spoke about.

    I think there's an easy complaint people tend to make about the author not intentionally creating a dialogue with the original on this level, but the fact that it came sort of naturally to him is even more meaningful.

    In 2016 I went to Japan to see my fiancee and unborn daughters graves in Nishinomiya. To try to keep me on a mentally stable plane I decided to do 2 pilgrimages: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and a combo one of Onegai Sensei/Onegai Twins. TMoHS is because of the graves location in Nishinomiya and we were both big fans so, hey, why not? Sensei and Twins was because she wanted to live at Lake Kizaki because she had been there and fell in love with it. Over 4000 photos and over 500 videos were taken while there! I was going to do a day by day documentary for my channel but it never made it past the Trailer I made for it. Let's face it- I'm a boring storyteller. I also posted my GoPro bike ride around Kizaki and at just about 30 minutes long it shows how boring I can be! I will tell you now that being at the Lake does have a rather deeply peaceful feel to it. It's like the gears in my mind slowed down and a tranquility came over me. The people around the Lake are the best I know from anywhere I've been. They are friends the moment you meet them. And this is where I will be living in 2021. My new home. Now that I made myself sound REALLY boring, I might suggest another anime to go with your discussion about Sensei and Twins: Ano Natsu de Matteru. This could be considered the 3rd installment of the series. It takes place in Komoro but the last 2 episodes end at Lake Kizaki. And the story is like a mash of Sensei and Twins together. You might find this one interesting!

    When ya boi Joe packs out the unexpected shows and starts making interesting points
    That dialogism "Speech acts are crafted in anticipation of another" sounded like something I do a lot...
    The revisiting of a space you were before in another show as an audience... It reminded me of the Pokemon games HeartGold/SoulSilver where you revisit these places you have been in previous games and when you complete a certain amount of the game you get introduced into yet another full region (Specifically starting from Johto and then going to Kanto). The interesting thing is that when you open the world to visit Kanto, you are already quite far into the game and you don't experience that Region as a beginner Trainer but as a "master" (as you need to beat the elite or something). Even when you haven't played the original game which was set in Kanto you will have experienced beating a pokemon region in this game already and getting introduced to this new one to beat as an already experienced trainer (in terms of stats) was quite a refreshing take which kinda recontextualized the whole Pokemon experience. It felt like diving into a pokemon game having you progress from a previous one.
    This whole video reminded me of said experience I had a couple of years ago, yea.h..
    Nice video, got me thinking again :)

      Pause and Select It really was. It was sort of a turning point for me as an anime viewer. With broadband and a newly acquired possibility to experience more japanese centric releases that traditionally wouldn't be the safest bet to invest on localizing for the west (although Onegai did end up getting that treatment), this series felt like a premonition of things to come, because when KEY adaptations, namely AIR, or later, Kyoani's Suzumiya came around, as I watched them, I couldn't help but to feel a lot of what made Onegai special, prodding on the back of my memory like a keepsake. Even though the phenomenon in and of itself wasn't necessarily new as your highlight of Sailor Moon's shrine perfectly exemplifies, these series helped to solidify this blend of captivating characters and the grounded, unforgettable locations they inhabit, as a genre in itself, like guides for emotional tourism.

    Just want to say your work is really inspiring. I'm curious, though. Do you usually start these essays with a series in mind and then you craft a thesis / topic to explore from that show (gathering texts along the way), or do you start with the texts as your topic / thesis and find an appropriate series to showcase that topic? I'd like to try to get into this kind of analysis myself and hey might as well learn from the best! Again, great work.

    Oh my god, it's setting moe!
    Let me explain... I've noticed a trend in fandoms where fans will feel a very real attachment to and nostalgia for a fictional setting. The most clear example of this for me is Hogwarts from Harry Potter--fans feel affection for the setting of Hogwarts. They wish they could receive their letters from the school, they reenact the setting in their own lives, they feel like *at home* at Hogwarts, they are nostalgic, even though Hogwarts never existed. This same feeling extends to The Shire in LOTR, the TARDIS in Doctor Who, etc. For the lack of a better term, I've dubbed this "setting moe," a type of affection for a setting because of narrative.
    Please Twins enacts that setting moe; the artificial-yet-real nostalgia for a place because of the stories that happened there. And indeed, I just realized that anime pilgrimages are related to setting moe--visiting the place or an approximation of that place where your favorite stories take place because you feel at home there. I think that the "secondary hometown" phenomenon is a testament to the power of narrative to entrance us and make us believe in the reality of fiction.
    So I guess "furusato" is the word used to describe what I've been calling "setting moe".
    Also, thanks for the video, Joe--I found it really enlightening!

      @maikutsukino4743 Před 4 lety

      This is 2 years out from your comment, but you might want to check the comment I just left. I think I just gave you a living, breathing example of "Setting Moe" though I'm actually moving there because that is what my fiancee dreamed of. But you make good sense! It might be me living her Setting Moe!

    • @paulocone1963
      @paulocone1963 Před 4 lety

      @@maikutsukino4743 Whoa, that's interesting. It's probably been a while, but I'm sorry for your loss. I'm happy you seem to have found a new home where you're moving, though!
      In the time since I've made my comment, I've learned a lot about both furusato and contents tourism/otaku tourism. (The idea that "furusato" is the word used to describe "setting moe" is not really correct, as it turns out.) But I have in fact found an instance of "moe" used to describe places in relation to contents tourism and appearances in fiction: the scholar Ikuho Amano talks about kōjō moe (factory moe). So I think my idea still has some validity, and I actually hope to study it more in the future.

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  Před 6 lety +5

      First off, I want to hugely thank you for being a fan. I hope I can clarify why I do what I do
      I hope you’re okay with me using your comment to springboard to a broader thing, which is my intention for choosing these shows that have, for all intents and purposes, borne me relatively little viewership. I am sure that your comment has no malice behind it, and I’m sure you mean absolutely well, so first off I want to say I appreciate it. I doubt someone would give constructive criticism unless they really cared. Thanks for caring. I know I sound sarcastic, but I really do appreciate it.
      I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t care that the channel’s popularity is, relatively, going down. I’ve tweeted more than once on how annoyed I’ve been on videos that haven’t garnered the viewership I had hoped. However, at the same time, I’ve come to the conclusion that if that’s the kind of content and ON the kind of content I want to make, it’s going to sorta be like this. As of this time, very few people are making videos about, say, *Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou* or the *Please!* franchise, despite my belief that they are interesting / telling works. In shining a light on them, I hope - and still hope - that I can give some of these shows the light I think they deserve. I do think there’s a lot of shows that do a lot of interesting things or have interesting ideas, but nobody really tackles in the community because (a) it’s not *as* important as this other thing, and / or (b) it’s a fool’s errand for channel growth.
      There’s a lot of channels out there that give these sorts of spotlights on texts they hope to have more interest, but I think a lot of them are kinda shows that don’t really seem to need it. There’s a million videos out there on Junji Ito, but where are the videos on Hino Hideshi? There’s a million analytical videos out there on the psychoanalytical undercurrents of Eva, but there’s very few on Chobits, another major psychoanalytical text.
      To a lot of people, they might say “Oh, just do popular shows first / at the same time as doing less popular shows to get your exposure up” - but my upload and content production cycle is already tight enough as it is. How many popular shows or popular topics should I tackle until I can now move to the less popular ones? Super Eyepatch Wolf reached his momentum with popular texts, and he’s STILL doing popular texts. If I did that, when do I transition? I have other obligations and things to do in addition to CZcams, so if I’m going to make content on CZcams, I’m going to make content I care about, and oftentimes that includes filling in what I think are gaps in ideas, theories, shows, texts, and sentiments.
      This can somewhat be encapsulated on Haraway. Have you read Donna Haraway? I’ve been on a kick with her stuff recently, and I really love her book, “When Species Meet.” In one chapter, she outlines her concerns with Deleuze and Guattari’s use of the wolf. She references A Thousand Plateaus, specifically this passage:
      “Wherever there is multiplicity, you will find also an exceptional individual, and it is with that individual that an alliance must be made in order to become-animal (241).”
      Here Haraway’s concern (if only partially), is that while Deleuze and Guattari accede to multiplicities, they nevertheless emphasize those multiplicities along the lines of exceptionalism(s). Here, the wolf edges more closely to exceptionalism, that we talk about packs and becoming, but the metaphor of the ‘wolf in a pack’ privileges the exceptional as indicative of the thing it is exceptional *of*. What about the other things in the pack, inter-implicated in that system? Haraway, as a huge lover of dogs, is concerned with the sort of ‘theoretical violence’ that happens with that line of think: by emphasizing the exceptional, we risk discarding the spaces in which these inter-implications happen. In other words, how do we study, or perhaps value, the moments that are either in transition, uncared for, or left to analytical silence?
      If you look at the comments, you can see more than a few people expressing their own experiences with the Please! series. To my translator and friend (Kei), his channel name is a reference to the Please! franchise. To a lot of others, the Please! series is an important piece in a very pivotal time in their lives. And, I hoped to express, that to many at that time period, Please! captured a powerful mundanity that was a mundanity nevertheless. However, like Haraway’s emphasis on the mud, that mundanity does not - and should not - exclude it from some careful analysis. It never excludes it from care. And the sacrifice to that, it seems to be, popularity. For the most part, I’m okay with that.
      This reminds me of Osamu Sekita’s comments on the Ichigo 100% adaptation, where he noted that he hadn’t read the manga before taking the project. He said (and I poorly and quickly translate):
      当時パンツを描くという表現はどこのTV局でもNGだったんですよ。アニメ化が決まったということは放送OKになったということでしょうけど、それでも物語のスタートは衝撃的ないちご柄のパンツですから(笑)
      "The idea of depicting panties at the time wasn't popular with TV stations. The fact that the anime was OK'd suggested it probably became OK’d for broadcast, but the story started with sensational strawberry-patterned panties. (laughs)”
      Here, he’s surprised for a show that nobody today talks about, but nevertheless rode the wave of a trope that would be come ubiquitous. Ichigo 100% wasn’t the first, of course (hell, there’s a panty shot right in Please! Teacher), but it nevertheless was a surprise to at least one of its staff members. That’s really interesting that it hadn’t become ubiquitous at that moment, and yet Ichigo 100% was so fixated on that image that it sets the whole story in motion to talk about images, personal drives, and dreams.
      But I can’t really talk about those things if I’m so focused on the big stuff, trying to rat race with a ton of other CZcamsrs with better systems of production or more adaptable content types to talk about the things they were going to talk about in the first place. I have limited time per day, week, and month to talk about anime; I might as well talk about what I want to talk about.
      I hope this explains why I do what I do and why I picked what I picked.

      Pause and Select I appreciate that you have taken up my comment in good spirit. It's really cool how you stick to your ideals and you run the channel the way you want. I will hang around and wait for your next video.

    Description mentions that spoilers for "Kimi no Na ha" will be present? Okay, I'll be back. In the meantime, take my 'like' as a measure of good-faith.

      yeah thats fine, through-line means a thematic thread running "through" a piece of art, I dont know what the other thing would mean.
