From the outset, British electronic music producer and DJ Greg Sanders a.k.a. Distance was concerned with crafting superb bass-heavy tracks that are atmospheric, highly detailed, and effective. His earliest releases came out on Hotflush and Tectonic Recordings, and since the release of his debut album My Demons on Planet Mu in 2007 and the formation of his own label, Chestplate, the man needs no introduction in the international bass music scene. On the New York stop of his recent US tour, Distance visited Dubspot and sat down for a quick interview that ranges from his early influences (including everything from Salt-N-Pepa to Fear Factory), getting into UK garage and embracing electronic dance music in university, his studio and music production setup (incorporating Steinberg Cubase, Native Instruments Komplete, Genelec studio monitors, hardware synthesizers, software synths and plug-ins), and meeting early dubstep artists like Mala, Skream, Benga, Kode9, and DJ Hatcha at the influential London club night FWD. Distance also commented on the popularity and commercialization of dubstep in the US, forming the Chestplate label and working with original artists and DJs, and finally offered some advice for up-and-coming DJs and producers.
Discovered Distance on youtube and never looked back. My favorite Dubstep artist ever.
Sleeper and District represent dungeon quite well, there also with Chestplate
Kryptic Minds, Biome, Benton, Killawatt, Thelem, Dcult,...
With what distance said at the end, idk how someone couldnt be into his sets, guy is a machine. one of the best sound designers ive ever heard!
Dubstep mos def has a future with people like this making it. Way to be a visionary and take us places.
Really Good
Distance and his label Chestplate have put out so much amazing music
Big up Distance! He thinks the exact same way as me about dj'ing.
You've got to be brave and let the masses hear new, explorative tunes and keep on doing what you like.
I love Distance, great interview and he is totally on point. Play/make what you want not what everyone else is, that is how you stand as an individual within the scene. Inspiring words.
and some mug has now claimed copyright. brilliant. its a fucking interview jesus christ
+Ellis Moody seriously, for fucks sake...
Excellent interview, nicely done guys!
Hell yeah, Keep it deep, dark and dubby.
Good choice for whacking 'V' in there... favourite song from Distance
True that, killer set without fail!
distance is so dope.
Damn, i just wanted to listen to his interview...
I have respect for all music, I listen to all genres.. A big thank you to those artist and fans who listened to my music and I look forward to hearing more of your band and I will support.. Thank you so much..
how could i forget to mention Minimal Mondays?? Youngsta killing it week after week
shit. this guys on point. wow,,,
To say the least...
absolutely.
Got on this from listening to two snippets of his tunes.. love the darkness of it all.. This is what dubstep was and should always be.. yet now its all about drops and skreechy garbage... some of the best tunes have no elongated 45 second- minute and a half drops.. no its just one killer sample.. silence.. then boom.. all dubstep fans should go back to the roots to really enjoy the love of making futuristic tunes..
I like both deep dubstep and lots of other kinds of music including brostep. They all take me somewhere different
Best Artist in the world
Love his point of view, glad to hear.
great interview !
i miss the good old skream/benga/dmz/distance and early sukh knight Times ... what happened to dubstep ? :( big up mr. Distance ... and big thx for all the good vibes u brought to me the other day
well made interview, subbed

He said exactly what needs to be said.
Distance is one of the best I think. Most interesting basslines for me for sure.
Bad ass.

I really agree with Distance about atmospheric music, buti will know say that brostep also can be atmospheric

Hi distance!
I REALLY love your stuff from 2006-2013!!
You are my favorite dubstep dj in this world!!!
I hope we could meet someday even though I live in America.
Don’t worry I don’t really like brostep either
I thought it was Sleeper - Zombies but it seems i'm mistaken :/ it's a chestplate release and probably you can find it on dubstep allstars vol 8 cd... sorry
Couldn't agree more about the brostep thing
THAT FUCKING RUFF HOUSE REMIX :')
I dont hate on any of the Brostep guys majority of them are very talented producers its just very rare for me to like one of their tunes.
Yo distance
This is the new account for Sarah Bellofatto
Ummmm
Hey dude
:)
Love how they credited the brostep song hahaha
Where?
which one is that? the one at the very beginning where it says Distance?
WHY CANT IT RELEASE YET
This cat is on point. Need to check his tracks. Its about where it takes you, not the crazy sounds.
track id 0:07-0:35 pls
chestplate is the shit
its Icicle & Distance - Exhale
4:44 - 4:57 ...the right words...
riverman33 man doesnt want it
Fx CoMbo ?
Why they play Too Many Man as a reference to grime when there’s a million tracks they could have used is a mystery.
Exhale by icicle and distance
track id from the end?
Carlos S Distance - Mind Control
Whats the song @ 8:15 ?
Brostep, the accidental bastard child of Dubstep
i love distances music but i love brostep too
but i dont get why deep dub heads go out of there way to hate it
anyone that produces music should be able to appreciate other producers even if the music they make is not enjoyable to them, because were all making the music we love at the end of the day and whats so bad about that?
Big interview, distance is such a sick producer. But i don't get when he says about dj's starting out and 'safe djs' playing music that everyone owns.. Obviously dubstep culture has always been to play dubs but not every guy just starting out has dubs that no one else has ... or does he just mean dj's playing all the commercial stuff that you hear everywhere else ?
...And didn't credit the awesome credits music.
0:07 Song???
Icicle & Distance - Exhale
only one way to convert from metal to garage like that .... chemicals
yeah thats what i think he is getting at. to many djs playing the uk top 40 in clubs and being to scared to play anything you dont hear everyday.
Great comment about making your own sound. So tired of hearing the same songs over and over just regurgitated.
brostep hahahaha
Good article, but I'm tired of the "brostep" criticism in the Dubstep community, and we need to accept people have different styles and agree to disagree on those flavors within dubstep. Snobbery keeps people from exploring, trying new sounds, inventing new things. Nobody wants a world like that.
Seth Rogen is distance.
fuck how am i supposed to know what genelecs this guy uses now?!
how the fuck can someone falsely claim distance's music in a distance interview?
BROSTEP LOL
what are you waffling on about? you must have replied to the wrong comment because what you've just wrote in no way relates to my comment
