- By popular request - here from Stratford High School's Stratford Playhouse production of WEST SIDE STORY is their version the "Tonight-Reprise (Quintet), plus the dramatic conclusion to the first act - ":The Rumble".
Damn, that orchestra is as good as any other piece of the production.
That can't be a high school orchestra.
Most likely the music was prerecorded and not by the high school orchestra.

I have seen off-Broadway productions that weren't as good as this great performance. Excellent job by a group of young people who are clearly putting their hearts into their roles.
I literally JUST watched a semi-pro production here on CZcams before coming to this video -- this is far better than the more experienced actors and singers in that one. Better direction too.

@@2TactTV Heh. Maybe, but, I mean, isn't what you're describing the JOB of an actor?! (And the director, to help them get there.) Besides, these aren't even real teens; just some 1960s, exaggerated concept of them from a guy who (I think) was in his 30s when he wrote it. I dunno. Could be just a better director.

@@2TactTV Yyyyeah, dude, saw the previous reply. Not sure why you repeated it. We've ALL seen plenty of actors who are NOT teens convincingly play teens or play elderly or play ANY NUMBER of things they are not. That's what acting is.

this is AMAZING. tony’s voice is so absolutely lovely, maria is amazing, but the sharks look like they’re in brown face.. nonetheless their voices sound spectacular

I was thinking how much I liked "tonight " and just randomly searched CZcams Can't believe what I stumbled on. One of the best WSS I've seen and by a group of incredibly talented high school kids! You really have to watch a few of these videos to believe it. The acting is as good or better than many professional productions. In fact, that's what I thought it was at first. Tony is portrayed in an honest, likeable way with a really engaging voice. Riff out does Russ Tamblyn in the 1961 movie.
But the standout far and away is Maria. She absolutely kills it! She embodies what Maria should be with an absolutely incredible voice
The videos are old enough that these kids may be starting their careers. Wish them all the best.

Incredible diction. I can actually understand the words. The accents are a little exaggerated and uneven on the other hand, but the overall effort is amazing!

Michaela Hewitt-Clarke This was taken directly from the original Jerome Robbins choreography, they had to sign a contract which legally obligates them to follow the original production EXACTLY as it was made. Just watch their version of “Cool”, it’s phenomenal for a high school production.

West Side Story is my fave film of all time , so much so that I can't even watch the new version!!!! But this cast were just stunning , singing , dancing , everything , they are all a credit to the classic 1961 film and I hope they have long and successful careers they all deserve to.

My school is doing West Side Story this year. Having rehearsed the quintet today, I genuinely think we're not that far of of THIS performance. Which is quite a feat, and I'm soooo excited!!

I like how Anita plays down her solo and keeps the sexiness at a low level. She's a high school girl, after all, and she gives very little emphasis to the (controversial) last line. Perfect.

solos here and there!
Wish Tony would give full measure to ending words, like "star" and "are". These are easy to sing and show off the beauty of the voice. He needs stronger breath control. I feel these last words are being cut off instead of savored. Then grab a breath quickly before the next line. I'd like to see the score and see how long Bernstein indicates to hold the note. He did great on the last "night" - that was held well. You don't need so much time for a breath, just grab it and next line. That allows you to lengthen the previous word.

Some the notes fizzled out and the orchestra was a little loud near the end of number. Plus anita sounded a little flat. Also Tony annouciated well but the t's and the s's were a bit too pronounced

ARTISTRY BRI it doesn’t matter about the the year they preformed this in, it matters about the year this is set in and most people from Puerto Rico have a more tan-ish skin color and if you have been casted as one of those roles and you don’t have a tan-ish skin color you would wear darker foundation so you fit the part. So it really isn’t “brown face” when they were probably directed to were darker foundation to fit a part
For high school students, the singing is well done! But, I definitely agree. People know from the original that there are two groups and one is PR. I hope in the future brown face doesn't continue. Agreed about the accents, too. I'm sure there is another way to creatively and visually show the different groups. We did this musical in high school too with a predominantly white cast. No brown face that I remember. Here's to more musicals with diverse casts!
