The Thompson was designed as a "trench broom" and ,therefore, is meant to be fired from the hip. In John Thompson's original design there was no buttstock.
That Thompson has a M1928 pattern lower on an M1A1 upper, kinda weird really. You should get a hand guard band to prevent the welded rib from possibly cracking
So the upper an lower are compatibles between all models?
O C Yes they are, but there are some distinct differences like the tabs on the selectors got more basic with the M1 model and they deleted the removable stock element.
The upper is where all the main differences happened with changes to the machining and bolts with the M1 having a spring loaded firing pin and a triangular hammer and the M1A1 having just a milled in protrusion on the bolt face. The 1921, 1928 variants of course had the Blish lock system with the bronze piece to help delay opening which doesn’t seem to have done anything.
I built an ar9 tommy gun . Its super rad. Gibbz side charging upper , Faxon 9mm barrel , faxon bolt carrier , LRBHO glock lower , all wood furniture plus angled foregrip , Troy irons with blitzkrieg chevron . Thing is fun to shoot , plus I get the best of both worlds, new meets old kinda... . Need to get a binary trigger for it next . Great vid gents.
I don't suppose you have any videos of this? I've got an SBR Tommy Gun, but I'm not holding my breath they will release a binary trigger for it...
Everybody seems to forget! We won the war with those guns, you got to give credit to the brave men that ran around the beaches toting those sticks of Iron and all that ammo
No we remember but weapons' have advanced past the guns of ww2.
Fudd
the thompson was outdated and obsolescent by the second world war, second, america didnt "win" the world war all on its own, the allies won because of their ability to work together as a team to make up for their shortcomings while playing to all their strengths.
overall, the weapons played a far less significant roll than people (mainly americans) like to admit.
@@unfortunately_fortunate2000
Idk.... those things we dropped in Japan seemed to stop the war pretty damn quick. Americans didn’t do that though did they?
@@hailtothe_rooster1572 thanks for shutting this anti American down
Forgotten weapons videos on the evolution of the Thompson is really good explaining the blish lock system is started with
This was really cool! Keep them coming!
I like the old vs new(er) comparisons :) Thanks!
It was wrong of you not telling your man the Thompson fires from an open bolt LMFAO!
Fun watching him figure it out.
Thompson is meant to be fired tucked under your armpit in full auto because that was the doctrine for close quarters combat back then. Even handguns were used point shooting at close range. Aiming down sight from the shoulder was reserved for targets further away and reading 1940s manuals it was supposed to be done in semi auto only. Even on handguns sights were used only for targets further away and that’s why they often had very small sights that are very difficult to use in cqb combat
would you recommend getting a 9mm pcc AR pistol in MA? We have some odd laws here and I went to a local gun store and they had a few. thinking of getting one before its too late. should i?
I bought an M2 carbine last year, and I’m waiting for my tax stamp to arrive. It’s kind of like a WWII pcc.
@Aaron Avery m2 carbines are full auto
For a fairer comparison of old vs new, one that I haven’t seen yet would be a 9mm banshee vs an MP5. Maybe throw in an MPX as well although there have been a couple MP5 vs mpx videos done
Good job! Love the video!
That is a M1 Thompson Upper and it does not lock before firing. It is just Straight Blowback Operation. The M1928 Thompson does not lock either but it has the Brass Blish Wedge that slightly Delays the Breech Action from opening upon firing. It also slight slows the Full Auto Cyclic Rate as compared to with out it.
Loved this video comparison
What Glock mags were those are they SGM? KCI? Kriss? Also were they 26 or 30 rounds? I’m asking because they seemed reliable.
how is your banshee shooting full auto? is that a wot trigger or franklin binary?
The Thompson machine gun's barrel axis is substantially higher than the shoulder pocket hold making it rise as it fires. Conversely, the AR platforms have a barrel axis that is inline with the shoulder pocket making it much easier to maintain a hold on point of impact with follow up shots or in full auto fire. The only drawback for the AR platform, (if you want to call it that) is the sight axis is substancially higher over the barrel axis. But if you're used to keeping the sights plumb, this serves to have a longer point blank (round hitting plus or minus 6 inches over or under your point of aim) range. due to the round having to travel farther to cross the first zero plane. If both have a maximum height over zero of 6 inches, the higher sight will have a longer point blank range.
Still would love to have a Thompson !
I just wish I could shoot my guns.
Haven't shot in 3 months since I have depleted my what I thought at one time was a good stash. I refuse to shoot my last 300 rounds of 5.56 or 250 rounds of 9mm. And cannot bring myself to pay 80 cents a round. I guess I'm going to have to.
This time last year I was proud of my 2k rounds of 5.56 and 700 rds of 9mm. What a fool I was.
Edit: I hear all the time, you didnt learn in the 2012 Obama scare? Well no, I'm only 30 and wasn't into guns yet in my early 20s. I didnt know any better.
I've been buying extra ammo from Academy when they get trucks in on Monday Wednesday Friday at regular price.
Protip: start shooting 7.62x39
@@AString95 exactly.
@@AString95 even the shittest corrosive spam canned steel case 7.62x39 is like 40 cents a round. Absurd since it used to be like 25 cents in Feb.
I hear you man. I didn’t get into guns until 2018. Saved up and bought a few expensive toys and all the Gucci accessories to attach to them...now I’m mad as hell ammo now costs more than the high priced accessories I bought last year lol. But I have 1700 5.56 rounds and 600 9mm so I feel like I’m doing better than most new gun owners.
How about the LWRC 45 ACP submachine gun, Kriss Vector 45 ACP submachine gun, and HK UMP 45 ACP submachine gun?
If it has M1928 stampings, I am guessing it's a M1928 receiver reworked to the M1 SMG standard during the war. There should be an ordnance marking from that, near the muzzle on my rifles. M1928s had a flip up ladder rear sight, and were almost always delivered with a barrel with cooling fins and a compensator. Those last two features rarely made it through the war though since they would get tossed with a worn barrel.
cool explanation
Its amazing how far tech has came in 100years
You need the Sgt Saunders Thompson from th old TV show Combat. I only remember seeing him reload only a couple of times in the years the show was on.
I like the comparison!
Keep the direct comparisons coming.
If they are popular I will do this. I need your help to make that happen
How the heck do you get it full auto
Thats awesome. Cheers
MP5 vs best 9mm AR variant?
Most rifle caliber machine guns are open bolt and lock before they fire. The exceptions are mostly old closed bolt designs originally intended to be water cooled, like the Maxims and Brownings, and a few roller-delayed blowbacks. The Lewis (also FG42, Minimi/M249, and M60), BAR (also Mag/M240), Degtyaryov (DP28, RPD, DShK), SG43, MG34, MG42/MG3, Bren, PKM, Negev, etc. are all open bolt and all lock before they fire.
Great video.
What ammo were y’all shooting? Are the M1A1 magazines new or used?
I’d love to have a FA Banshee to compliment my M1A1. Thanks Reagan and AFT.
The Direct comparison is sweeet!
Very cool comparison
I carried Thompson for a short time. I qualified with M16 and M14 but was only issued M14. Since I spent so much time in helicopters and jeeps, tried to get a M16 but instead I got a Thompson. I believe it was heavier than the M14. It jamed on me too many times. I now have CMMG in 45 and love it. It is not fully automatic, however, I do have a binary trigger. I have a AR15 as well in 5.56. No jams in the CMMG with thousands of rounds.
You were lucky.
Recon Corpsman for 2nd Recon Marines were only issued the Government 1911 as a defensive weapon according to the Geneva Convention.
But, fortunately, my Marines let me qualify at the range so, unofficially, I'm an Expert.
Just couldn't have it on my uniform.
Is the an echo trigger or does it have a true fun switch?
Nope, those are both actual machine guns
I love the fact you got your ffl/sot 02/07
I believe ya, but my CMMG Banshee doesn’t
It just doesnt fit

Yeah she works dandy
@@ghostshadow5643 don’t run it suppressed then. That’s how mine broke some some of the parts according to Kriss.
My issue was the M3A1 Grease gun.
I love the curve mag aesthetic. So guns line mp5, MPX, AKV. Seeing the gun on cmmg website it makes it look like the Glock back angles so far back and I thought no way that looks gross. Seeing it in action in the video it's back on the I want this gun list
Forward grip might help some
MP40 vs MP5 vs CMMG Banshee 9mm?
Oh, I finally get to see where the world's most jank, mismatched, and half arsed cannabalized zombie thompson went to . The A1 upper would be so ice if it had those nice feature and the totally functional "blisch lock" system 💀👌
Why does that VFG bother me so much being that far forward?
Yeah that was a kick ass video!!
I love watching sarge in COMBAT with his M1a Thompson
Great video. Get the uzi in there somewhere. I'm still waiting on my 10mm banshee
Best millimeter
Waiting on a Mk 47, taking soooo long
Would the CMMG the best 9mm AR out currently?
Not a bad option vector 9 spd better
love cmmg's I need a pcc... with the election and everything I'm worried about ever getting a chance to own one. They arent the cheapest and if we change guard the prices go up before jan 21... I'm hoping to at least get the upper... The engineering is so cool
@Florida Man HVACR Hey HVACR, I'm starting HVAC classes at 62 and "retiring" around south of Tampa, maybe Ft. Myers/Naples or Port Charlotte/Sun City Center.
Where would you recommend?
I wonder how much an aftermarket, "modernized" stock would affect the Tommy gun shooting experience...🤔
Awesome comparison video-- two small combat sub guns designed, essentially, to do the same job!
Talk about comparing a small slice of one century (early to mid 20th) vs. the next (early to mid 21st)...
🖒😎
Pretty kewl!
imagine not knowing that open bolt machineguns exist, and, not being able to realize that you're holding one because you think everything ever made has a bolt release...
I love that Open Bolt Speed but AR version runs smoother and more accurate. Tommy good suppressive fire weapon but unless that's all you got there's better options for suppressive fire 🤣. I really like that AR and wouldn't mind getting a Semi Auto Only version and Ironically might even save few bucks vs the Semi Auto Tommy.
The old vs new is cool .
I still want both! can we see a 10mm in an AR variant?
mattanimo cmmg also makes a similar model in 10mm. Checkout texas plinking he has one
@@ogaboga97 thanks! I searched CZcams and was enlightened lol. I have a cmmy resolute. now I need a banshee in 10mm!
i personally prefer the .45 as a PCC. Got to get that cmmg though.
Apples to oranges if you compare sights. You need a 1928 or M1 that had adjustable sights and a cutts comp.
I liked this video
Priceless, but you guys are just a little mean. Lol awesome video
I own a CMMG pistol in 7.62x39 and I dearly love her ........
“A heavy Bitch”😂
Sick 🤩
Chicago typewriter just has a style all it's own. Good nuff for Sgt Saunders, good nuff for me ! Lol which Thomson? The slowed the fire rate on later ones
Where's Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner?
Chicago typewriter lol I like it
And that's why I bought the M1 Garand
The M2 carbine has a lot more in common with the CMMG than the Thompson, and looks like an AR-15 traveled backward in time, and got pregnant by an M1 garand.
@@surplusdivision2461 hahaha you've got good point
move that foregrip back a slot lol
Wish my banshee went brrrrt like yours..
Your trigger finger will fall off trying to rapid fire the thomson.
Technically the Thompson doesn't truly lock. It's really just a delayed blowback. The Blish "lock" has been proven to not actually do anything.
'Crap' show some respect son! Heavy old beasty the Thompson but it did good service. The new one looks great. It was an interesting video. That is an M1A1 not an original version of the blish lock type.
That's the most unreliable Thompson I've ever seen. I agree with the rest of the info in this video!
Put a franklin binary in the banshee and tell me that isn't a modern Tommy gun or I was may call it the Timmothy gun
Would love to see the same kind of vid with an MP5 thrown in!
I hate the MP5, but I can try
@@VSO_Gun_Channel stock geometry with an A2 is halfway between the Thompson and the AR style straight, would be interesting to see recoil & muzzle rise compared across the 3
That third pin!!!!
You gotta run Federal 230 grain in the Tommy gun and oil it
I like this comparison especially B/C the CMMG Banshee is a HIGH quality PCC as is the old Thompson. And WOW! the CMMG's rate of fire with the Franklin Armory binary trigger CAN be around 800 rounds per minute!
I also own a "HEAVY BITCH" PCC, namely a 9 mm RUGER PC chassis carbine (8 lbs. W/O ammo or sights) But, with M*CARBO and MAGPUL upgrades is dead reliable and very accurate, Imagine, a 16" Cold Hammer Forged barreled PCC for $750. !!
Good vid but extremely dangerous moment at 5:52
Not sure what you're talking about
You are exactly right. These guys obviously don’t know anything about open bolt machine guns. In case of a jam, you always lock the bolt back first otherwise there is a chance the round that failed to feed will chamber and the gun will fire. He is lucky the bolt did not have enough inertia to fire the round plus he was aiming into the air which could be a bad thing for someone when the bilullet comes back down.
I considered buying a Thompson about 15 years ago, then I held one, 15+lbs= No Thanks.
Not a good gun to carry across Europe thats for sure (by todays standards, in WW2 it was the best they had and it was better than what some of the poorer countries were issuing), but the weight helped a lot with recoil management.
Odin will not remember you with that attitude
15lbs? No. 10lbs.
10.8 if you wanna get technical and depending on the variant. My recall was about 15 years ago, regardless of my guess, that is pretty damn heavy and the weight doesn’t even help manage recoil much. I appreciate the history of the Thompson, but as shown in this video, there are better options unless the potential buyer is feeling nostalgic and wants a piece of history.
@@synystur21, well of course the modern gun is better (which would be much more relevant if full auto guns made after 1986 were legal for civilians). Of course, it doesn't help that these guys are shooting the Tommy for the first time. If you watch this video you'll see that with the proper stance, recoil management was a non issue for the tommy gun. czcams.com/video/vvs6iBROsmc/video.html&ab_channel=MachinegunDAD.
The Thompson didn’t pass the Tula test
8:53 🤣🤣🤣🤣
If I am going to get a pcc, it's not going to be a Thompson!!
If you're gonna have a Thompson submachine gun, man up and mag dump it. None of that 3 round burst nonsense.
Gun Drummer making his rounds
Not exactly a good comparison. A hodgepodge Thompson that hardly works in its most basic M1A1 configuration. I'd be much more interested in how a 1928, or a Navy model compares. Those were the tricked out guns of the day with better sights and a Cutts compensator.
I will buy a grease gun first.
Buy?
Got an ad “Do this to get hard instantly!” I said, too late.
So this is something that confuses me. How are all these people on CZcams getting modern full-auto firearms?
The Tommy I get. Pre and Post Dealer sample laws make sense. Expensive and lots of paperwork.
But I thought the FOP Act made it illegal for civilians to own anything full-auto made after 1986. Some insight would be great.
A manufacturer or sot license allows you to produce machine guns for demonstration purposes.
I felt like they were disrespecting the Thompson. The banshee is sweet but it didn’t win any wars 80 years ago. Bad form guys.

Make sure you let him know. I think he is a year older than me.

I wonder if soaked Tommy in CLP like a soldier does a Ma Deuce she would run better? I remember in Iraq My M240B liked being wet. Before we used Bravo's on our trucks we pulled our Coax M240's off are Tanks and threw Bravo kits on em and I kept mine on Gas Port 3 and always kept can of WD40 in my Turret and my M240 always ran like a sewing machine nice and surgical. My PSG always kept his .50cal soaked in CLP and wouldn't never let no one clean it for him when we was on Tanks still 🤣, said he ain't trusting his life to no Pvt 🤣. I remembered tho I only ran open bolts with WD40 tho and closed Bolt drenched in CLP and rag to wipe outside of it and never had a weapon jam up.
I just love how a military guy, doesn't understand why there's no pressure installing the magazine into an "open bolt" firearm!
