Danny was really good but the best irregular character for most people would have to be Lord Marbury. He was one of the great scene stealers in TV history.
@@Elthenar I always wanted to turn off the TV when he (Lord Marbury) came on. (Much like many of the characters seem to want to do.) Which is saying a lot, given that it's West Wing.
You are correct it is an unusual line, but it does tell us how much Danny loves and cares for CJ. It was great to see in the opening scenes of Season 7 that they did "get it together" and have a child.
You know a great script when you read it. You know an actor is excellent after a few scenes. But on screen chemistry? That is rare and pure luck. Best show there ever was.
CJ Cregg, White House Press Secretary and Chief of Staff, has negotiated with so many tough people in so many dangerous situations... and the thing she's scared the most is breaking her own heart. Just like the rest of us.
That's still one of my favorite "relationship" lines of all time. "You can be scared. That's okay. But you're not gonna walk away from me because you're scared. I'm not that scary."
Agreed, CJ was never going to find a guy with her relationship skills. Danny saved her from a lonely life. She puts everything into her work and doesnt really know her self without her work. I've been there and i never want to go back.
C.J.'s so exhausted here. Being WHPS was stressful enough, but becoming CoS increased it hugely. Leo chose her because he recognized something kindred in her. C.J. became very much like Leo as she grew into the role, and her sense of duty to others over herself would have killed her eventually, just like it killed him (granted, she didn't have his history of addiction). I think the difference was that her strongest love was Danny, and was increasingly outside of the workplace. Leo's strongest love was Jed.
@@gabrielabagala Josh was a tier above her on the org chart, but she never worked for him directly, she worked for Toby. And yeah, she never cared too much about the hierarchy!
What made him more awesome is he never let that compromise his job. There was more than once that he came up with something bad for the White House but he didn't set it aside because of how he felt for CJ. He did let CJ know ahead of time a few times, but he never stopped doing his job. Because he loved his job, just as CJ loved hers. I also get why she didn't want to stay at the White House. She had 8 years of fantastic experiences there. Trying to do it under someone else wouldn't be the same, as there would be the ghosts of those who passed on (Leo McGarry, Mrs Lanningham), and the ghosts of those who weren't working there any more. It was time to do something different. And now she had time to do that with Danny.
Timothy Busfield is one of the best character actors of the last 30 years. From Field of Dreams , Little Big League, west wing and then Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip he has done his craft well.
I really like the way they didn't actually put Danny and CJ and Josh and Donna together until the show was almost over. So many shows ruin the great, entertaining tension by resolving the "Will they/won't they" dynamic too early on.
I'll argue that this worked (and the Donna/Josh worked) because they didn't waste time with a will they or won't they subplot, they put the 'feelers' out there, but left it alone and didn't waste valuable screen time with a romantic subplot that was going to be disruptive to the story... The will they won't they stories are destructive simply because it makes one or both of the characters to appear to be idiots.
The "What else" at the end is just genius writing. CJ's "partner" and maybe the person she's trusted the most for the past 8 years has been the president who is known for that phrase. It being reflected from Danny, her new partner who is convincing her to trust him is just *chef's kiss*

All brilliantly done, but the 20 seconds of silence and looks between “Good evening sir” & “Thank you” set up this masterclass just perfectly. That’s Emmy stuff right there! And better acting than every episode of “The Only Way is Kardassian Something Whatever” put together 😡😡
I loved the restaurant scene where Danny ask CJ to hold hands as they jump off the cliff. Also that he just loves the sound of her voice. He really loves her - thats all that matters.
The other aspect I find hilarious - Danny opens the door there is CJ and her secret service men. Who must have that total discretion, knowing that CJ and Danny are having sex.
A weird thing to think about... The West Wing and The Sopranos, were both made pretty much side by side timewise... They are so different in their base, yet they are so so alike in their perfection and just... Quality...
